View Full Version : Advice needed: loose brake rotors

Hi folks, need a bit of sage advice here. The front brake rotors on my Gixxer 750 are quite loose - they move back and forth about a couple of mils and a wee bit sideways too. There's a TradeMe auction going for what I believe are identical rotors (for about $200) - I'll be confirming this by having a look at them tonight. Do you guys reckon I ought to change them? I estimate that I'll be keeping the bike for up to another year. At the moment I feel like changing the rotors simply because they make an annoying clunk each time I hit a bump (no matter how small) on the road..

Once they get excess movement forward and aft the carrier's holes are starting to elongate, they are toast or close to it...If you have a 96 up GSXR any TL/ GSXR1000 to 2002/Hayabusa or GSXR600 rotor will fit as long as it is a 320mm flat carrier..if you have a pre 96 GSXR i have a close to excellent set of 310mm rotors (fwiw)

200 bucks is bloody cheap for a pair of discs. Even if you don't use them, buy them anyway for when you do.

I've heard of getting discs re-rivited to stop them from doing that, if the brake surface is still good

Those rotors on Trade Me will fit a 96 up GSXR SRAD..of course whenever i see a set of gold centre rotors like the ones being sold,i think of the set i let some GSXR600 racer try before buying... guess he liked them enough to keep them :violin:..i guess the check is still in the mail or he forgot the way back

Yup got a '96 SRAD 750.
Paid the guy a visit last night - turns out the rotors are exactly the same EXCEPT for the thickness: they were 0.5mm thicker (confirmed with a digital caliper)! The min thickness figure stamped on the rotor carriers is greater by the same amount too (4.5mm vs 4mm).

Do you reckon they'd fit?

I'm after a set of 310 diameter disks. any pictures?

They will fit for sure..the thinner version was on the 600 for one..all bolt on though...only other difference is the number of retainers ,10 on the earlier version then going to 8 but again does not affect fitment.

Its one of those things I hold dear, the ability to safely and quickly stop. Could save your bacon ahe? You really want to risk it? I'd get it sorted no matter what the cost. :ride:

i'm trying to get a set of disks to fit a marvic. looking at the picture on trademe mentioned earlier, if the mounting holes are the same, i reckon they should fit. i might have to come around and have a good look at yours.

keep me posted.

cheers

The bore in the centre of the carrier is bigger on the 310mm.The PCD of the bolt holes different also, plus the 310mm have a dished carrier, flat on the 320mm.I will get some pics and measurements first thing in the morning to compare to the Marvic.

good stuff. i'll measure up my old disk as well.

i've included a diagram of the pertinent measurements.

Whoops, obviously the newer 320 will have the bigger bore to suit the bigger wheel bearings, not the other way as i posted above.

These should get you started

DID IT AT WORK MYSELF WITH A 10 TON PRESS, BE CAREFULL DO EACH RIVET A LITTLE AT A TIME, IF YOU DONT HAVE A 10 TON PRESS GET NC30CHICK SOME HEELS AND GET HER TO GENTLY STAND ON EACH RIVET , MAKE SURE SHE HASNT HAD TOO MANY PIES THE DAY SHE DOES IT.
SERIOUSLY LITTLE AT A TIME FOR EACH RIVET

What part of "excess" did you not understand?... Typing in caps is one thing, compressing the retainers on a semi floating disc rotor (with alloy carrier and belville washers) in an attempt to disguise wear is another, suggesting it to someone else who may or may not know better is beyond belief.... Slob,i will lend you a set of good 10 button 320mm rotors until you find replacements if you want, please do not even consider compressing the retainers if you think there is excess wear.

BEEN THERE ,DONE IT A FEW TIMES NOW NO PROBLEMS , DID IT TO REALLY LOOSE DISCS AND RACED ON THEM , AND DID 2 UP STOPPIES ON THEM AND THRASHED AROUND ON THEM FOR ANOTHER 25,000 KM , WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO CRITISIZE WHAT I DO , I ONLY GAVE ADVICE AFTER PRACTISING ON MY OWN BIKE, SO LEND HIM SOME ROTORS AND SHUT THE FUCK UP

Gotta love these impromptu verbal punchups :devil2:!

Cheers for the offer TLDV8 - I think I'll be getting the ones from the Trademe auction as it looks like they'll fit (would have been much easier if SunStar stamped the bloody part numbers on their rotor carriers though). They're in pretty good shape too.

Cheers for the advice Winja, but I couldn't think of a polite way to ask NC30Chick to stomp on my rivets with her stilletos!

Hydraulic press or a kick press? FWIW, I can't see any objection to this IF DONE JUDICIOUSLY. Which I suspect Mr WINJA did. I would have thought it might not have lasted very long, because the wear would not be uniform, but results would seem to indicate otherwise. An extra 25000 km is not to be sneezed at.

Hmm noone has asked if they are actually meant to be that way. Are you sure it has not had fully floating disks added? I have worked on a lot of Jap imports that have had floating disks added. They clunk like a bitch but provide great feel and better brakeing power due to the disk being perfectly aligned in the pads.
Send me your old disks if you dont want them. I will pay the freight. (i use the disks to make trendy photo frames and biff the carriers.)

Your overreaction confirms guilt or perhaps you are use to getting your own way on KB,it may work with the newbies but i am to old and ugly to go for your legend in your own mind act.
The looseness is from wear, what backyard mechanic's like yourself fail to see is the retainer is supposed to have a running clearance from new which increases with use..I feel sorry for the next person who ends up with something you have butchered to save a few dollars.

"Gotta love these impromptu verbal punchups ".. Slob,i have no interest in any kind of verbal..after 7 years on US boards i have got use to internet trolls like whinga :devil2:
