While watching the training run on news tonight I wondered about the point of it all.
So lets say a 'hostile' sub did show up in NZ waters from one of the following countries, just which ones could we bomb their sub without getting bushwacked afterwards???
Especially if you factor in other countries treaties and alliances etc...
Have deleted obvious permanent friendly nations from the list. Feel free to sidetrack rants about skyhawks etc... ;p
Algeria [1]
Argentina
Bangladesh on order
Brazil [2]
Chile [3]
Colombia [4]
Ecuador [5]
Egypt [6]
France
Germany (list)
Greece
India (list)
Indonesia
Iran
Italy (list)
Israel
Japan
Malaysia
Netherlands (list) [7]

They normally drop torpedo's ...
And ..
Surprising as it may seem ... The Orions are actually capable of delivering Nuclear weapons.
If pressed ... you can even drop one from a Herc ..

Maybe that's why John Key seems happy to sell our souls to the Americans.

We need to practice bombing beaches in case any of our Pacific brothers decide to support China in the upcoming Pacific showdown.

Ancient history, they weren't looking after anyone but themselves
The Jap's printed bank notes for their use in New Zealand for occupation use.
They kicked Jap ass BACK to Japan.
Quite a few yanks "Looked after" a few (quite a few) Kiwi girls when they were stationed here in NZ ... prior to their shipping out to the Pacific war zone.
THEY saved our butts ...That is what Allies DO ...

They saved out butts as a byproduct of looking after themseleves

They could have saved more butts if they hadn't let pearl harbour happen... just like 911 they needed an excuse to go to war...

MMMMMMMMMMM...... NZ was not at war with the Japanese until they bombed the Yanks in December 1941 so we actually declared war on Japan because the Americans and British did................;)

Wasn't even as simple as that. IT was more the byproduct of a byproduct of a byproduct. They needed to save their butts true, they needed Britain to stay in the war, they needed Britain to survive the war so they could bleed he dry and dismantle her empire and force her to repay the war debt, Britain needed us and Aus to stay in Europe and Africa. The Ausies pulled troops back the Brit convince the US of A to rush troops to the South pacific rather than lose any more of the brave colonials to defending their own countries. In short it wasn't to save our butts but to save Britain's and US of A's

That only took until 2006, 61 years after the war ended

This whole thing just reminds me of the "Bulldozer" on the $5 bill.
There is a reason why the Swiss no longer user a Victornox knife......it was a shitty knife. Likewise Orions make shitty bombers.
It makes me dumbstruck we can't afford a MQ-1 / MQ-9. Or even an A-10?
Less of an Air"Force" and more a gust of wind.
On a side note - I got to see some cool shit parked up on fathers day. Best fathers day ever.

At first I thought you meant a preemptive strike on Auckland. I was all right on! Wait... My kids live there... Poo my job is there... Give me a couple oh days and light it up!!!
I hate Auckland. Rat infested jungle of smog.

I dont particularly like Americans and a lot of that is from a modern day perspective. You can always pick them in a crowd, they are the ones with the loud voices and an infuriating accent that really grates your brain. ( About as bad as listening to Jimmy Barnes ) . When it comes to international commerce they are happy to ride roughshod over everyone with their high volume aggressive consumerism of often mindless products and single digit margins. As for international travel the US is not even on my list because its so ''plastic'' A country with neither creed nor culture.
An indication of their arrogance is their rebuffed request whilst stationed here that they wanted the road rules changed to driving on the right side of the road.
True enough from Kichaha etc that they only got involved in WW2 to protect their own ( expansionist ) interests and with money being involved ( lend lease etc which made Britain poor for many years ) In fact there are perspectives to say that the Japanese were pushed into a corner and that a number of Asian countries ( or peoples ) welcomed their expansionism as a means of getting rid of other historic forms of colonial rule
But the uncomfortable truth is that if the Japanese had gone along unchecked we would either be wiped out by their genocidal activities or we would be slaves to their very racist regime. So this is lesser of the evils mentality.
What disturbs me also are historic stories of Japanese coming ashore here in at least remote areas of the north and purchasing meat and produce off local farmers.
Certainly we should stand for something and show that we will do our bit to contribute to regional security with the Australians. That we are not contributing enough is very evident, while we go about wasting huge sums on treaty settlements etc

Funny, I have found them all to be fairly mild-mannered and mostly gosh-darned polite - both here and in the US.
Your decription however would fit an awful lot of Kiwis I've had contact with...

Yes 100% agree, their govts foreign policy is an absolute disaster but as people they are very friendly and helpful.
I used to deliver foodstuffs to USAFE Lakenheath and Mildenhall when in UK and I'd get offered breakfast or lunch at just about every dropoff spot! Their battered onion rings are to die for...
Funny though the local poms didn't get on well with them in villages and pubs. I guess it must suck when a whole lot of F15 Pilots roll in and start dating all the local hot chicks!

Not many people do now days.
I love their motorcycles, V8's etc , Argh that potato sound.
Like a lot of the jappa stuff too.
But I do feel a tad uncomfortable that we seem to be sucking up with the Free trade stuff with countries that are not involved in what we were historically aligned with.

You have to admit the Russians do a better job at selling the positive press.
As far as everyone is concerned the PAK-FA is the best thing on the planet. Meanwhile the F35 is grounded due to fires, has a HUD that can't update faster than 5 fps when you rotate your head, is 500% over budget and 300% behind time.
As for the Eurofighter. Meh. I am sure it flies well - but so does the Chinese "29/22's" (or whatever we are calling the Frankenstein now).
However on the note of the Orions. Maybe they were training to bomb a certain 777 out of the water?????

Hmmmm maybe not the 777 but if some independent explorers or Somalia pirates towed in some damning evidence it could be inconvenient for the West...

Plenty, I nearly got married to one but she came to her senses after four years and left me!
