So all that engine work, for ABOUT 10BHP MORE THAN A STANDARD xr1200?? <_<
Just as easy to buy (XR1200) off the shelf and lighten it a bit.

ALL that engine work? They've given it a light massage mate. Should I build one...I'll go sick on it. Use an XB9 crank (shorter stroke...can rev them to 9 grand...big 1400cc kit pistons...easily get over 100 foot pounds of torque. Wheelie monster.

ALL that engine work? They've given it a light massage mate.I must be reading it wrong, doesn't it have:
- A block from a Buell, bored out
- Sportster crank
- Sportster rods
- Ported heads (and presumably larger valves)
- A different carb
- Custom inlet manifold
- Aftermarket pipes
I'm not sure that swapping out the motor, then doing further work to it, the changing the entire induction and exhaust systems, equates to a light massage. I'm not really sure how it only equates to less than a 10% increase in power either.
The bike is currently in the jetting/tuning stage, but so far, it starts in about .02 seconds when you hit the button!!
When the most exciting thing they can say about it is how quickly it starts, it really paints a picture.

Well, it's actually a 1200 M2 Buell engine, which obviously is a lightly modified Sporty engine anyway. So hardly a huge mod there right? Putting a heavier crank in it from a Sporty to smooth it out is hardly much of a hot rodding mod either right? So what....an exhaust you say? Well a std exhaust wouldn't fit the frame now, and so they had to change it anyway right? Hardly earth shattering I wouldn't have thought? Bored the cyls right? To what...1st over size to freshen up a worn engine? Look out top fuelers!!! A diff manifold? Holy shit! So what we've got is a 1200cc Buell engine, with a mild port job, cams and??? Yep...a light massage in my books mate. When the thing is bored to 1400cc with a trick short throw crank, down draft juel injection with wild cams then we're getting a lil serious. We built a 1350cc Buell XB12 a while ago...does around 125hp and 115ftlbs worth of torque. Most Japanese bikes won't see which way it went on the street.

Love it or hate it, the Harley Sportster has been an American motorcycling icon since 1957. Around 50,000 are built every year, taking up a fifth of the Milwaukee factory’s production capacity.

So hardly a huge mod there right?Yeah, there's your salesman lines coming through (I was going to say lies, but it's not really). That is a huge modification... that is not the block it left the factory with, short of changing the frame, it's difficult to find a modification with more significance than that.
Putting aheavier crank in it from a Sporty to smooth it out is hardly much of a hot rodding mod either right? No, other than a like for like replacement, changing cranks is not considered light modification.
So what....an exhaust you say? Well a std exhaust wouldn't fit the frame now, and so they had to change it anyway right? Hardly earth shattering I wouldn't havfe thought? Bored the cyls right? No, what we have is a bike that has had it's entire induction system changed. All of it from the filter, through the manifold, past the valves, the head, the cams, out the other side, through a different exhaust and muffler.
Yep...a light massage in my books mate. When the thing is bored to 1400cc with a trick short throw crank, down draft juel injection with wild cams then we're getting a lil serious. Re OP. I like it. My kinda Harley. The problem with it is that by the time you put all the shit back on it that you need to get to get it registered - guards that comply, number plate, legal lighting - it kinda looks like a XR1200 again - with a smaller tank.
Personally my favourite Deus bike is a Big Block - probably a standard dyna - that they turned into a full-on flat tracker style. I'd throw more coin at it that they did. Excel wheels, Ohlins, Race Tech, et al. For a big bloke it would be the shizz.

I read somewhere that EB's favourite bike was a Honda RS250 GP bike and that as near as possible the Buell geometry and wheelbase mimics that. they certainly are short and go well. I really liked the one I rode. But the bike I bought was that Honda Hornet 900: what swung it was same money but brand new and Honda reliability and new bike warranty.
Probably a mistake, in hindsight.

The bike itself is lovely.
Why it still wears a HD badge is perplexing, since 1/2 of the frame appears to be of that brand, the rest seems to come from other sources.
The list of other manufacturers supplying parts, seems rather large.
"Custom", I presume...

Lol. Size does matter! I don't think the parralell twin engine has the weight centered as low as the v-twin myself...same as the other geezers at work that rode it found. But you're such a tall/big fuck they're all easy to hoist up! Once on the road it was fine. Just getting it off the side stand took way more effort than a big twin I reckon.

THAT was a decent performing bike that I would have owned.

Nah, got the MT-01, performance standard is pretty much the same, just one revs slow and torquey, the other is a bit more 'rev loving'.......

... even before HD purchased Buell...Buell purchased the Sporty engines from HD obviously...so really...the things not really just a Harley? Seriously?
Up until 1995 they were purchased from HD. Two major engineering upgrades on the motors by Buell in 1995, and again in 1998, veer from the start point of the block and are certainly not "standard HD".

Ha ditto. Got the Honda new a bit lower than the Buell. Figured I'd not afford any 'exotic' (ahem) issues if I Buelled.

Most of the differences he's describing were carried over to the later XB12 engine. Don't think they splashed out on magnesium cases for the stock XB but most of the remaining differences are easy enough. Easy for an engine shop that is.
So there's your first excuse gone. Got any more?

:psst: That's the success of marketing in the modern day I suppose. My sporty does it for me. I've spent more on it than what it would have cost me to get any big block I desired ,just on the improvements I wanted. Nothing from the "Wall of Chrome" either
( In my tiny mind anyway).
If I was a sane person I would have bought a Buell when they first arrived  .
Would have cost a lot less but it would still be just a hardley to the knockers.
If I want all the technology I just get the MV out.
Truth is I still enjoy polishing the sporty more than I do trying to wash all that technology.

It's a heavily modified cruiser. Still has a cruiser engine.
Actually its not. As a "cruiser" engine V-twins are horrible. The shake and rattle.
A boxer 4 or inline 4 would be a better cruiser engine. Or boxer/inline 6.
The biggest and best "cruiser" cars were actually straight 8's.

A low revving twin is good in a cruiser. Big torque and slow revving is perfectly smooth enough when used for it's intended purpose.
