View Full Version : Twin headlights

The other week I caught a bit of Top Gear that had a Dolomite Sprint on it. I always fancied one when I was growing up and it got me thinking. As far as American cars go I always hankered after a Plymouth Roadrunner, I even painted one on my bedroom wall as a kid. My first car though ended up being a Mk 2 Cortina, with big fuck off Cibie spotlights.
Got into bikes in the mid 80's and always wanted an early GSXR750 - later models not so much. I did have an FZR600 at one point and quite fancied an RC30. The one thing that I have realised all these cars and bikes have in common is the twin round headlights.
Is there a subliminal tit fetish going one here?

Some of the earliest bikes with electric lighting kits had twin headlamps...
While they had electric light - they had not invented the twin filament bulb yet... The first twin filament bulbs was about 1924/5 from memory and before that 'dipping' the light was a mechanical thing. Some cars had triple filament bulbs... (cor) Motorcycles lagged a bit due to it being difficult to make a generator small enough...
So - some bikes had two seperate headlamps - hi and low... Sometimes it was just a style thing though..

I do wonder if the reliability of bulbs from that era had something to do with it Paul?

Very likely - the reason (or supposedly the reason) gas lighting went on so long was that it was reliable. Bulbs then were fairly brittle and when they are getting banged around on a rigid/girder bike over rough roads and fed a fairly unregulated power supply, they were far from reliable...
Its actually an interest of mine (a minor one - still working up to geek status) on the development of motorcycle electrics. Motorcycles present some difficult design problems and there have been some interesting solutions. Lucas get hammered but back in the day they were pretty advanced...

LUCAS! The Lord of Darkness.
Rose coloured specs there I think Paul.I remenber more than one ride home with bugger all illumination to the front and the tailight was a hit and miss affair.
My twin headlight introduction was either Dad's Mk3 Cortina, or one of these:

Of yess - been there done that. 6V dynamo systems were bloody awful once the bike had passed its first flush of youth. So many points of failure including the complicated switch with its mass of wires and the regulator box (CVC).
The later alternator systems were more an effort at simplication and lightness that didnt really come until the zenner diode was invented and didnt become reliable until the manufacturers learnt NOT to hide it under the seat.
Yep, I can relate. Dad had one of these which started it I reckon

And then there were the few cars with three lights, notably the Rover 90 and the Austin A90 Atlantic. At the time they were introduced to NZ it was illegal to have one foglight, so they had to be disconnected.

Funny that, my first memory of a family car was a Triumph 2000 with my dad telling us when we hit 100 mph on the dual carriageway.
Twin headlights.

We used to go backwards around roundabouts and were told if you did it enough you'd time travel. Steering the P6 (Betsy) and almost hitting a caravan is my first car memory though
He had a brown one of those or a later model Triumph at some stage. Didn't have it long so don't know much about em, but yeah twin lights. I always thought it was a V8 too but could be wrong. He did have a 2000TC for a while too when gas started getting out of hand.

P76 did have 4.4 rover v8 and a 2.6 straight 6. I think the delux had only 2 headlights and the standard and the targa had double headlights. :Punk::Punk:

It was the Triumph I meant, but cheers for linking a new to me car :niceone: I don't think I've ever seen one of those, and if I did I'd probably think it was an old Mazda  The hatch version reminded me of and SD1 but when I looked them up to refresh my memory, the SD1 is way uglier
The P6 was just the 3.5l 8, didn't realize Rover did a 4.4l. Will have to read up on it at some stage. Wonder why they never put them in the Landys like the 3.5.

I had a canary yellow one of them. The roof caved ( about 10-15cm in the middle) in every time you went over 90 with the windows down. To pop it back out you put the windows up and went over 100.
And now for something decent.....

An old school buddy has got a green one of those with a Levin motor in it (4age or something?). Pretty sure it's supercharged now (SC12 or 14 I'd guess). Rest of car is stock standard/mint-ish and his Grandad bought it new so complete history. Cool wee machine.

I was reminded today that I put a blue Falcon just like that in to a bus stop when the road was covered in snow a few years ago. I don't count it though as it was a work car.
My first car in NZ was a Mazda 808 coupe which looks remarkably like some of those rotary's that were posted. Don't recall if it had twin headlights, but I have now studied my car and bike ownership history, my list of vehicles for when I win Lotto and a couple of the MILF's at school and have decided that yes, I do have a condition and that it is not as subliminal as I once thought.
I blame Pam.

When I was much younger, I worked hard, bought cars and bikes with my money, and worked on them.
At 19, I bought a Jensen Interceptor Mk3. Not the finest example of the model, and it was Mustard yellow with a black vinyl roof. Girls loved the looks, boys thought the 7.2 litre V8 was impressive. Twin headlights, of course.
I sold it to buy a Giallo Yellow Lancia Delta Integrale. :shit: Tuned by BBR, seriously fast. Cost me £10 a week to insure. And also had twin headlights.
(Many, many BMWs have had twin headlights, too, of course.)
Anyway, bikes. Maybe the Arabs have the right idea? Lol.
