Anyone using these? Thinking about an upgrade for my old carburetted R1 and these are one of the only compatible wheels available for my old girl. Are they sweet for road use? Any ideas, opinions, recommendations most appreciated. Salt

best to find out what the wheels actually weigh, modern wheels are fairly light std. Lighter wheels is the best bolt on mod you can make, they say each kilo of unsprung weight you remove is the same as 6 kilos of sprung weight. But the juice has to be worth the squeeze..... if you only save 500grams then you may notice the effect

Some road bikes come with them standard (think Aprilia Mille R) and they handle road use just fine. The old R1 wheels aren't particularly light so you will pick up some performance, but not so that you would notice on the road.
The other thing to consider is the reality behind the old 'light wheels are the best mod you can make'. If you have 15 year old suspension that has done 60,000km, then it will still handle averagely. Throw the same money at suspension upgrades and a proper setup and it will ride way better than ifyou just put new wheels on.
Plus those OZ rims are like half the value of an old R1 (or more). You could just buy a better bike?
Those were my thoughts when I considered it/researched it.
Though if cash isn't an issue and you use it on the track, then do it.

Apart from opening up my engine there's nothing left to do but the wheels......

As others have said, modern sportbike wheels are surprisingly light, and can often be retrofitted from other brands of bike. Get onto the enthusiast forums for the R1's of your model - as there always seems to be someone thats already been down that road.
