oh and is there anyone in nelson that wants to go and take it for a test ride and take a look at it for me?

haha yeah was just asking that :psst:

I would just ask the usual, does it use oil, check if it blows smoke when you take it for a test-ride (giving it a thrash too see).
Check the tyres for cracking, what condition is the battery in.
Looks okay and reasonable value going by the advert (hard to really tell though of course).
I believe the motors are fairly tough if looked after.
Cheers

Will have more go than your VT!
If the budget allows try and get both tyres together as mismatching them can caus problems.
gamgee
8th September 2005, 18:08
could you just go and look at it for cosmetic damage, give it a big rev and see if it sounds rattly, then ask the guy if he'll ride it in front of you and just observe any strange noises (if there are any) i'll be up in nelson at the end of the year with any luck but this will have probably sold by then, so if you could do that i'd really appreciate it, or even better (just had a thought) do you know anyone else up there who would be keen to take it for a bit of a thrash?

thats almost impossible to do unless you've got a fortune to spend on tyres, as the rear wears out approxamately twice as fast as the front, so every second time you'd be replacing them at the same time, which reminds me, the vt needs a new front tyre, more money going out, how much do you reckon a good arrowmax front would be for a vt250f?

At the very least buy matched tyres, don't have random manufacturers and models front and rear. It is best policy to change both at the same time though.

The ZXR should be sweet !! they are a prety bullet proof bike, the one issue i had with mine was frying regulators, so i replaced it with a zxr750 one, problem solved..
Buy it....
gamgee

oh yeah definitely, arrowmax all the way, it's already got a set of them on the vt250 at the moment, just wondering how much a new front will be roughly?

True, have to get a new rear tyre for the Bandit... another $250(ish, I dont know) on the bill! Fking 300ks a week on the moterway kills the center off in a year!

just asked, it doesn't burn any oil, all it will need soon is a front tyre, he said no strange noises, it sounds like a pretty good buy, so if nordieboy thinks the same when he takes a look i'll buy it, thanks all :Punk:

No battery yet.
Rear tyre is good.
Front tyre is wearing on the sides - won't pass many more warrants.
No slop in the swingarm.
Right footpeg hanger has been re-welded - obvious but not a problem.
Carbon can.
Forks are smooth throughout their travel.
Fork seals are good.
A little bit of rusting and bubbling of the chrome on the bottom of the sliders but not near full travel.
Front guard mounts are cracking/cracked.
Front discs are well worn.
Rear disc is good.
Brakes feel ok but can't really tell without a ride.
Rear shock is smooth - no slop in the linkages.
The bodywork is all there but quite a few nuts/fastenings are missing inc the left hand mount between the frame spar and the fairing just below your left knee.
The right hand ram-air pipe elbow is severely cracked where it goes into the tank but is easily replaceable.
No slop in the steering head bearings.
The fairings have been repaired with fiberglass in places.
Switch-gear is all there and all have positive "clicks" no sloppyness.
Chain looks to be in good condition.
Overall impression is that it could be a very nice bike with some elbow grease and a re-spray.
All depends on the engine really.
Oh and if you're under 6' tall it would be more comfortable.

good little bike --The cracked pipe thing is common.
will definitely need a test ride to make sure its straight and true.

wow, thats a very in depth report, thanks so much for that!!! so what would you offer them for it if you were buying, they are asking $2600.
how serious is this part:
"The right hand ram-air pipe elbow is severely cracked where it goes into the tank but is easily replaceable."
thanks again, rep points for you!!

11th September 2005, 17:43
how much would all that cost to fix?
NordieBoy
11th September 2005, 20:26
The ram-air pipe elbow is just a small piece of plastic it could be taped up/glued or replaced.
I wouldn't buy it even for $500 but that's because I don't like that sort of bike :D
Spending a couple of hundred on it would clean it up a very nicely.
I have no idea what it would be worth at all.
This is the cracked elbow.

It sounds quite rough, like it's been dropped a few times more than he's letting on, i might just leave this one, i've asked if he'll bring it down to dunedin (where he lives) if he won't well not even going to consider it, but thanks for all your help (especaially nordieboy)

I've owned a couple of 400 sports bikes. 400's are a blast, especially if you live somewhere near tight twisties and like ambushing bigger bikes. First time I got my knee down on the road was on a 400. They really feel like propper sports bikes, where 250's just try too hard without any real substance. The only downside for me is that smaller bikes get uncomfortable after a while.

which guards are you talking about when you say:
Front guard mounts are cracking/cracked.
is that the wheel spray guard one?
