Just a post for those of you that don't use FB but have maybe have met Vicki... If you have you would know that she is really one in a million as opposed to me...
Anyway - Vicki has been in hospital last few days fighting pneumonia and thus far its not going very well... Shes a bit the other side of sick and its been a bit of a trial ... Most worried I have ever been for her... most messed up I've ever seen her...
Anyway - just an info only post... Get back to whoever you were assassinating...

Another bloody tough day for Vicki... Managed to get a tiny bit of food into her and some juice but not much else.
Oxygen levels still pretty dreadful but the other numbers are looking better (marginally) and the doctor looked a bit happier today...
Shes still fighting it but its starting to take it out of her now and its hard yards... I'm hoping it wont be much longer now as I don't know how much is left in her tank.. Shes pretty damn tough.
Everyones been very kind and that makes a big difference - I read her all the messages and stuff.. Not sure how much she hears but hey... Left just before 7pm as she fell asleep (finally)..
Dark days...

Todays update.... Vicki had a pretty major emergency this morning. The whole ICU team with every machine in the hospital (including the one that goes 'bing') ready to pounce. The respiratory team got her going again ... She had a CPAC mask that would have scared Darth Vader and looked like an octopus on her face... Gleep.. Pretty intense...
However she also had a specialised nurse and frequent visits from ICU team member doing their best to keep her out of ICU and in High Dependency Unit.. HOWEVER this was the crisis we were waiting for and from the look of her this afternoon I would suggest we have turned a corner.
Before we get excited lets remember that this means we are now not fearing the worst but planning for the best and there is still no talk of going home as her lungs still need time and work to repair. She had an x/ray in bed this afternoon and the doctors were not that happy with it...
Still - I'm at home and will sleep tonight....

One thing that needs to be said .... Our GP Dr Jan Lavery is all pure CLASS. She was at home tonight and rang me on my cell this afternoon when she got a courtesy copy of Vickis last xray. She was worried about Vicki and called me on her dime after she had already gone above and beyond getting us into hospital...
She had an initial consult with Vicki Monday - had us in and out of xray at another location, prescription filled and in our hand, documents done and medical team at hospital contacted in 30 mins... She came out to the car at her practise to check on Vicki....
Dr Lavery is a credit to GP's everywhere and without a doubt the best and kindest doctor we have ever had...

Vicki is out of the HDU (yippee) and is starting with the basics like walking a few steps...
Its a huge step towards recovery so we are all very happy about it as it was touch and go for a while there.... sheesh... Now we just need to get her off the oxygen and the old lungs going again and we should be thinking about bringing her home...

Yesterday was really a big leap forwards...
We managed a two walks around the ward (me dragging the oxygen) and I got a lecture about what clothes would be 'appropriate' for her to go home in (sheesh)... Apparently the raggy old trackies she was wearing when she was admitted just wont do at all... My my how things change...
The doctor is also hinting she can come home in a 'few' days if she behaves and things keep improving...
Thank goodness... What a ride this has been.

This has been a very educational experience...
You certainly don't need to be a genius walking around the wards to pick out some of the common complicating issues that the sicker patients have in common. I mean that does not absolutely guarantee you wont get sick or anything BUT it increases your chances of survival by factors of lots...
Two weeks back Vicki and I rode our mountain bikes down to paekak and back for lunch and this after her carpal tunnel/trigger finger operation so she still had pretty good residual fitness. I know how sick she was and some of these people could host a mountain bike park on their stomachs FFS.. and the crap they eat/smoke/drink.... Sweet jesus...
I tell you it was an eye opener.... If ever I needed an extra driver to work harder this is it...

Day 10. Sigh...
Vickis improving all the time but... This pesky infection and fluid on her lungs are proving quite resilient. Her temperature is still too high and shes still on oxygen.
Sigh.... The doctors 'few' days might just be a few more days yet... argh... Still she walked a lot more today, me tagging along with the oxygen cylinder but when the poor thing developed a cold sweat sheen on her face it was time to get back to the room... Feck.... 3 weeks ago we had a great ride on our mountain bikes - then WHAM.... lifes been 'difficult' since then and shit I don't know how the hell people with serious long term illness cope... I had a haircut today - social high point of the month... LOL

Patience Paul, difficult as that must be. Vicky is in the safest place possible at the moment. Don't be in a rush to get her home. Everything changes at that point, all the hospital support is gone and its just the two of you. Been there as have many others. Keep Vicky in hospital until she is well.
Day 10. Sigh...

Give you a smile. Mark and I came back from our 4 days off a month yesterday. Really relaxed and rested. Innocently went to bed last night expecting nothing more than a great nights sleep. Fecking smoke alarm went off at 2:30am. I may have sworn a few really rude words,
luckily I look wonderful in my dressing gown at that hour of the night as I race upstairs to see where the "fire" is...
Who in their right minds burns their toast at that time of the night?
Actually don't answer that...
