Arse! this clashes with the TT2000,
I was wanting to do both but might just have to do my own version of the DB on a different date.

Unless the DB1K has fresh new terrain, it's barely changed in 5 years. Enter the TT2000, there are new roads every time.

Here's a 'special' TT2000 checkpoint that I've asked Mike to include for 2015, but he's declined. Maximum points for it, though!

Epic say...
we hope to see you all in February 2015...where we have a few surprises for you lined up already!mmm, wasn't going to bother again as I expect to be down there for Bannockburn week instead as I enjoy the laid back messing about more than the focused go go go, but can't help but wonder what the surprises are and if they be worth going again for.

Ha ha, be nice but I'm not so sure you speak the truth.
Now lets see, the first one was at 5:30am on the 10th March 2007. We all started together that year and it was very dark as we climbed the Nelson side of the Mangatapu.
So anyway... 2015 will be the 8th DB1K... and my 8th DB1K start.... yay.
If only I'd managed to finish them all.

Perhaps I could lengthen the RRRR to 1000km. It wouldn't be difficult to add distance. It wouldn't be as scenic or challenging as the DB1K, but I'm sure I could add plenty of interesting bits. Just a thought...

I like the claim on the website.
"The DB1K route has varied over the years, however the southern route has proven to be the most popular by offering riders both outstanding riding terrain and stunning scenery."
The southern route is most popular because the last time it was run anywhere else was in 2009.
It's a pity the top of the south doesn't have any stunning scenery or riding terrain :(

The Original DB1K is all public roads. Just need $20 for the Rainbow.
Wouldn't mind trying it as a 1 dayer now.
The 350 would be my bike of choice, but the headlight isn't up to night riding...

Hi there Ktmsouth, not to sure if you have done the route before but just to give you an idea of a time frame that you'd be looking at...the record is approx 19 hours by a Dusty Vet who had prearranged fuel drops and is a very quick rider, he rode a KTM 450 with safari tank. It maybe possible to be a bit quicker if you are in a group as he had the disadvantage of having to get off and open and close the 30 odd gates on the route, he also had heavy fog to deal with for first two hours, I for one would be impressed if you get anywhere near his time!

Wonder how many there actually are? Transalper?
Probly not a starter this time(probly) Depends on the route quite a bit.

There is a promise of a surprise or change or two for 2015 but that you have done one over the two days is good to hear, at least you go in with a good idea of what will be required.
Gates.... I've been fairly lucky in not having to open extreme numbers of them myself with the groups I've found myself in but weren't there are around 30 in Tompsons Gorge all by itself... though they are not always all closed.

I see the latest email out says it is a GPS route only.
I loved the route sheets. Riding and fun navigating at the same time. Yeah GPS is easier and more reliable, but 10% the fun.
It seems a shame they are getting rid of that part of the ride.

Set the GPS for turn by turn navigation.
That is no fun because it knows where you are.
I loved the orienteering element to route sheets. Being told to turn now is not the same as having to check through half a dozen boxes to make sure you went right at the hedge, 350m to the gate then 4.8km along the track across the river and staying right at the barn. Am I the only one?

I'm with yah Chris, alot more satisfying to navigate the route yourself rather than being told where to turn, getting lost is part of the adventure!

Feed the GPS route into rallynavigator.com and it will spit out a route sheet. A bit of tidying up and away you go...

I was not going to do the Dusty Butt in 2015 as the date did not really work out with a work conference that I had to attend:cry:
So I had decided that Bannockburn Bike Week would be the better option and had booked in for that.:done:
In a very unusual situation for me planets have all aligned and my work conference is now going to be based in Christchurch, leaving me with the dilema of should I
do the Dusty Butt or Bike Week.:blank:
The decision was too taxing for my tiny little brain to cope with, then in a moment of clarity I managed to stumble along the perfect solution.:devil2:
Do Both
So I am registered for both events, with a quick flight home for 2 nights in the middle to make sure that her indoors hasnt left me and to get ready for my conference.
Bring on January, I cant wait. Now I just have to plan what to do in the 4 spare days that I have down south before bike week. ( Clarence River Reserve perhaps ?? ).
I plan on crossing over on the ferry on or around the 26th January, so if anyone else is heading south about that time it would be good to meet up.

Anyone got a previous dusty gps track that I could have? I want to load it onto a gps and see how it works.
Transalper
26th November 2014, 19:23
Take any track log of around 2000 points and load it in to your GPS (as a track log) and navigate it in its raw form. That's how it was done last year.
All the modern Garmin GPS's (excluding zumos) can do that simply by transferring the file to your gps then on the bike you go to the track manager menu, select the track and select 'go'. Then you follow the purple line (or what ever colour you set it to if you've been messing with options)
The older units can not load tracks with so many points (they simply get the end of the track cut off at the gps's maximum ability) or navigate smaller track file as easily as that.
It is easier to demonstrate if you have a track that starts near you.
