A LOT of other parties can learn from this.

Good on ANY party leader who does this. Perhaps Mana, Maori, Act, Liarbour, Greens, will all take heed and learn form this.

Today on Brekkie TV - the Australian Govt's main finance man was interviewed about his newly released budget which is being branded over the ditch as a toughie. This guy went on to say - NZ went through the tough work over the last few years. He said the Key Govt is widely regarded by world leaders as inspirational for the way they have brought the NZ economy back to the brink of surplus. I for one am not saying that the Aussie Treasurer or the US and UK equivalents are right to cast the Key Govt in such a positive light. I am fairly certain however that they know more about what they are talking about than BanditBandit - on such matters.

Just this year, in the Nats ...

I think you've proven already you're not a National supporter, but he's dealt with each issue? This latest one, she's gone. If she didn't go, they had already told her there was no way she was coming back into Parliament.

Not sure why you're complaining it's not sticking? You want him to leave when someone else made a mistake? Voters aren't stupid... actually, some are dumber than a fence post, but, what opposition is there? I would hope that the average voter would see how the country is finally succeeding, while plenty of others aren't, the financial balance is looking healthy despite some tough issues. Why would the average person want to piss that away?

On the other hand, we can have someone that apologises... for everything, including apologies...

Probably. Remember only half the country bother to vote, the other half knows its a 3 year train wreck no matter who is at the wheel.
And of the half that vote, less than half of them vote for the winning party...

It's probably because what most people see, is a couple of minutes on the news of a smiling, competent sounding (in an atrocious genuine Kiwi aksunt) bloke that answers every question thrown at him in an open, non-dodging way.

Plus they focus-group the shit out of every issue and know exactly which way public opinion is leaning.

Fuck, you never let facts get in the way of a good story, do ya?

Voter turnout in 2011 was 74.2%.
Of those 49.34% voted for Govt parties and a further 2.6% voted for the Conservatives.

You completely miss my point .. I am certainly not a national supporter - but don't jump to the conclusion that I'm a labour or GreEns supporter either .. there is no conclusion that you can jump to from that statement.

Secondly I am not complaining .. in a sense I am amazed and amused ...

In the same bulletin that announced Hauiti's quit ( a very small news item) a big deal was made of Silent T apparently wearing his red scarf too often ...

I'm just amazed and amused that "Teflon" John survives so many of these things ... when Labour MPs get hammered by everyone ...

Sure they are all MPs .. but Teflon John survives anything ...

(PS - I don't really give a shit who is Government - they are all good and bad .. and we always survive .. and personally, I have done financially well under both Labour and the Nats .. so what difference does that really make?)

I honestly don't know.
It is something to do with his "everyman" persona, and the fact that he runs the Govt like a CEO.
It also has a lot to do with the fact that the opposition are incompetent fools. Stuff like Cullen’s “Rich Prick” comment and the colossally stupid accusation that Key was one of the architects of the GFC are manna from heaven for the Torys.

Sad fact of life is that Politics attracts politicians. A bit like prisons attract prisoners or shit attracts flies.
White Politicians have a few hundred years of refining the art of theft is all. The Maori's will get there eventually.

The bigger question the next generation will face is will the new generation of politicians (Maori + all other races) take the same amount from the public as past generations. Or more?
Either way our kids are screwed worse than us.

Politicians are not Icons.
They're people, and to expect them to act otherwise is a mistake.

I cant believe how low opposition parties have sunk when it comes to leaders with credibility. None of them have any backbone.
Russell Norman seems to the only one who seems to sticks to his beliefs, even if I thinks he's wrong on a lot of things.
I admired Pita Sharples.
Colin Craig comes across as a pasty faced rich mummys boy,

Because the media still like him and the people that answer polls are also the people that watch what the media says and can't think outside the dogma. Next term, when the businesses running the media have tired of him, or should I say they (nats) have delivered on most of their promises to the 'media' and the Nats are starting to think they nolonger require their puppet masters then you will see a swing. Basically the way it seems to work in NZ is first term be good to the people, (don't sell the family silver for example or interfer in how they raise their kids for examples), second term make good on your promises to the masters that you didn't exactly make clear to the voters, (sell sell sell, exert control), third term the polies start thinking they can go it alone so it is time for the masters to bite back.

Not a bad summary really, seems to go like that. On that note though, why the hell do we have to go through this circus every 3 years? Fucken unproductive considering a change in government. First year is getting to grips, last year is electioneering, so one year of anything that might resemble productivity? Lets not even mention all the costs associated as well.
