View Full Version : I have enough money to buy an RC30

because my insurance company has cash settled part of my insurance claim after the earthquakes.

How do I convince my SO that buying an RC30 is a more sound financial decision than fixing the driveway?

Your thoughts callers?

No convincing required...
"settled part of my insurance claim"

There is your answer right there. Use this part of the settlement for the RC30. And use the other part, when it comes, for the driveway.

And I thought you were smart!!

the beer to be used as bait to get mates to come around and help you do the driveway yourself - saving money.

No point having a pretty bike if you can't get it up the drive is there!

I can answer in no other way though as work on my driveway starts in a month. Got $17k for the total fix and will get the work done for about $13.5k. Balance is going towards recarpeting the house along with what I'm saving on the house settlement by doing my house repairs myself. If I'm lucky I'll have about $3k left over to play with after all that. It's a bugger being a grown-up sometimes!

You don't want an RC30 - believe me. I've been into a couple and unless it's been maintained by a fastidious obsessive compulsive, it'll get expensive bloody quickly. Once done though, nice to ride for the short time before it has to be sold to defray costs...

Fix the bloody driveway then flick the house for the excessive profits being seen in ChCh at present. Then live in a caravan and have as many bikes as you want....

If you ride one for any serious distamce - RC30, not camel - the engine heat in the groin area will (a) kill the fleas, and (b) render you sterile.

Nice bike to lust after but fuck, fixing one to a reasonable standard is bloody expensive. One i did had the cush drive springs in the 2 piece cam gears collapse. Didn't know they had them there did you? Anyway to fix that involved making jigs to press the 3 piece cams apart and back together - maintaining alignment as well - no keys! - after we'd made new springs...and there are 4 cams too so it added up quickly....

I knew they had cam cush drive springs, and I'm not at all surprised that Honda made it beyond difficult to replace them.

I could have bought one when I was in he UK about 2003-2004ish
Was only 7500GBP at Norfolk Honda dealer but 41000 miles. But it had been ridden well and a fair bit of salt corrosion, marks etc...
Should have bought instead of worrying about a house deposit.
They were an iconic bike alright but surely a modern day aprilia RSV4 is better value???

Yeah I know it will have a bit more character and prob easier to ride. Just that for me the main attraction was only ever the fact it had V4 powerplant.

Tell her you are worried about her security - there have been a lot of robberies in your area lately. You feel a shingle drive would be better as baddies don't like them as they make a noise when walking/driving on them. Heck you'll even be nice and get some of that pretty coloured stones.

Re V4 Aprilia - will that be of any value if kept tidy in 30 odd years?

I don;t think so - we are not getting the milestone bikes anymore - presumably because they are all so friggen good now that a significant model advancement is very difficult.

The CEO of Honda announced that there was a new V4 limited edition sprotbike in the pipeline. The magazines all assumed this ultimately to be a replacement for the CBR but time passes with no sign of the new bike. Not that it matters too much to me, they were guessing $100,000 or thereabout for the SE version.

It was at a Facilities Management discussion on occupied space in Auckland and it came up. They mentioned one guy who owned a few buildings that were destroyed and they took the insurance money and bought buildings in Auckland and that companies who moved to the outskirts show no sign of wanting to move back to the city.
They said Vodafone were but not many overseas firms. I have no idea on the ChCh market but it did not sound that good for the CBD area.:(
I don't even know what an RC 30 is, the 80's and 90's bikes passed me by both literally and metaphorically.

CBD has a bit of construction going on now. A fortune is being dumped into foundations. Thing is pre earthquakes the CHCH CBD was dying somethign awful business wise, the Council were even trying to find ways of bringing people back into it. Having said that there were 22,000 or so working there when Feb fucked it. Having been in CBD then I am still surprised the body count was not 1000 plus.

Govt and Council red tape is pissing off property owners in the CBD - easier to take your coin north.

Who decides/defines what a 'milestone' bike is... There's lots of bikes from recent times that were common as muck but now becoming collectable. I think once electric goes mainstream anything of internal combustion will be hot property to some extent...

electric motorcycles...that's a depressing thought.
Milestone bikes are not necessarily ones you would want to own and ride.
At a show recently in AK the stand next to our boring BMW one has a Suzuki RE5.... Milestone at the time, in reality more of a millstone.

Grrrr Dropped to 19,995 6 months after I paid for mine. Last new Honda ill ever buy.

I mentioned just this thing in another thread. BlueWing put bikes on the market at a silly price, eventually it dawns on them that people are buying Suzukis or whatever for less, so they drop a few grand off the price. Guaranteed to piss-off the few owners who already bought one. I bought my Hornet after I heard that the price had dropped by $2000.

The new 650 Honda looks nice but at $14,000 it costs the same as the new Yamaha 900 triple. I would buy a new Honda again, but only after the cold winds of economic reality blew through the corridors at BlueWing. Meantime my Triumph is fine thanks

In 1987 I bought a brand new Honda GB400TT Mk 2 for $4399 from Sawyer Honda in Adelaide Rd in Wellington.

They then dropped the price to $3999 about six months later. At the time that really pissed me off.

Speaking of which there seems to be a lot of new CB1100F's for sale on tardme by Honduh dealers at $15995, which is the price they should have been from day 1.

Directly competitive with the Bonneville, Harley Sportster*, Guzzi V7 and every other retro-standard out there at that price.

They've probably fucked the market for them though and no one will want them: particularly as the new model has ABS and a six speed transmission as standard

* You do get to pay a bit of "Harley tax" if you want to own a sportster but it is in the ballpark.

A bit like the Desmosedici - don't try riding one in traffic in a West Australian summer!

If you lust after an RC30 - just do it - better to regret having done something than not doing something!

I still get vexed over the immaculate low mileage, non raced OW01 in New Plymouth Motorcycles I couldn't quite afford back in 97! Shaun was a salesman there at the time and tried to get me interested - I was interested, just not quite single enough at the time! It was about $12k or something, if I recall......

I've got plenty (the missus would say too many<_<) of two wheeled toys but chairs and sports quads can bar me up as well. Had to give up my off road bikes and get a quad due to rooted knee (no cruciate ligament and not much cartilage), I still miss my dirt bikes though...her indoors was really pissed off when I bought the CCM but that only gets used on gravel. Hmm Bluewing pricing.

I picked up my Hornet 900 for $9,999 new on a discounted discount  They were $15k when first introduced.

Predator Came in at $19,999 pointless price for me to even consider a 'upgrade'. They ran them out at $15,000 in the end - if they had come in at that price bet they would have sold more.

Suzuki cream out the world overstocked model each year with Summer Fest. GSXR's Bussas etc - given fuck all changes between years saving big coin on last years model is good buying.

I like those, but not enough to want to own one. Unlike an RC30.

At that price point I would take any of the SP-1's or 2's presently for sale.
