Not sure on the extradition thing, but my support (what little there was) of the man, has dwindled to nothing now really. He said last week that he has more dirt on Key but will leave it untill closer to the election date.. it's my belief, that whatever he has on Key (if anything) wont be worth a mention at all, which is why he does not want speak out now, might make him look a bigger mug (pun intended) than he has in recent times, by joining up with political dropkicks & has beens.

He's releasing his 'bombshell' 5 days before the election. To me that just means whatever he has to say will not stand up to scrutiny for more than 5 days.

Hard to believe that really. He is apparently bringing Glenn Greenwald to the function at which he plans to produce his "evidence". If you don't know who Greenwald is, you should. Still, all will be revealed in the fullness of time.
The only problem I have is in understanding why Dot Com wants to prove Key a liar. That's a given - for all politicians.
The poll results for the internet party and possibly Mana are currently likely to be artificially low. Most polls are conducted over landline phones. A fairly high percentage of people considering voting for those parties don't have a landline so nobody is asking them who they will vote for. The first time they answer the question will be in the voting booth.

Not sure how he has been treated like shit. He's on the run and should expect the occasional helicopter with armed police to invade his home. Most other countries would just simply deport him and not allow him to exploit the due process system.
Does he have money, other than what he has taken illegally? His former employees say he certainly doesn't pay anyone he owes it to. The Mana and Internet Parties might be filing for bankruptcy in the not too distant future :o

I reckon this could all be part of a giant social experiment. Have him mobilise the youth vote and massively upset the established paradigm. Soon laws are relaxed along with cultural and moral norms being eased.
Young and old clash, economy falters, riots break out.
End result is the Elite et al gets to see what it looks like when a western nation crumbles. They've already had fun with their colour revolutions in Europe but they want a practise run on NZ first before taking down the USA.
USA has gotten too big for its own boots along with too much freedom for ordinary people to become successful and the Elite don't like that, its time for them to start afresh.

Its pretty well known that younger votes generally vote for the minor parties (greens, act, etc.) and don't have landlines.
The 2013 Census tells us that 85.5% of NZ households have a landline telephone. This means that landline RDD (random digit dialing) sample frame non-coverage is up 6.1 percentage points, from 8.4% of households in 2006 to 14.5% of households in 2013.
This isn’t the percentage of individuals not covered by landline sampling frames. It’s the percentage of households.
Between 1% and 2% of households will not have access to either a cell phone or landline, so this means the proportion of cell phone only households has increased from somewhere around 6% in 2006 to somewhere around 12-13% in 2013.
http://grumpollie.wordpress.com/2013/12/07/the-number-of-nz-households-with-landlines-and-the-problems-with-phone-surveys/
A survey in 2012 by Canstar Blue found that a third of Generation Y in New Zealand have abandoned landlines; 14 per cent of Generation X and 8 per cent of Baby Boomers.

Nah fuck it bro, lets get it out of the way.
It is based on households that are below 60% of the median disposable household income (after housing costs). People often mistake it for being just 60% of the median household income which was $62,000 in 2012, but that doesn't consider tax payments, mortgages/rents etc. The median disposable household income is much lower than the median household income (which in turn is much lower than the "average household income"). Median = the point where half the population are above it and half the population are below it.
Check this out if your interested mate.
http://www.occ.org.nz/assets/Uploads/EAG/Final-report/Final-report-Solutions-to-child-poverty-evidence-for-action.pdf
The median disposable household income (after housing costs) in New Zealand for a family of two adults and two children in 2011 was $1,000 per week (Perry, 2012). (The median varies according to family size and composition.) This means that those with incomes equivalent to 50 percent of the median were receiving $500 per week).

Income is based on the premise it will determine our access to resources and services in society. While another measure ELSI looks at material deprivation - the basics that people don't have (the figures for ELSI show child poverty slightly below the numbers from using income as a measure, but not too far off):

The most damning thing from the report shows NZ's priorities: Look after the golden oldies, fuck the young!
http://i58.tinypic.com/6zmzcx.jpg
Table 1.3 highlights that child deprivation rates in New Zealand are higher than in most Western European countries, but lower than in the poorer countries of Eastern Europe. Such results are not entirely surprising. They reflect the fact that living standards in New Zealand are somewhat lower than in many Western European countries while income inequality is greater. We note that the rate of material deprivation amongst those aged 65 and over in New Zealand is very low by international standards. This suggests that achieving a much lower rate of childhood deprivation is possible if this were a policy priority.
*Note this is talking about deprivation (Lack of basics, not household incomes)

Thanks for that. Truly am interested. Good to know there is a methodology around it and what it is. I guess that means then that the measure of 'poverty' changes depending on where you live. There'll be a lot of people living in 'poverty' in Christchurch at present the way the rental market is here. I do wonder where the figure of 60% comes from though. (May be in the document but I only skimmed it).
Playing around with these figures then: $62k median less rent @ say the $440 a week my work colleague pays and tax at M tax rate ($243.63 pw) leaves $26541pa x 60% = $15870pa or $305.20 per week to live on after accommodation is paid. So anyone who has $300 a week disposable income after their accomodation is paid is in poverty? Add kids into the mix makes it harder but then they get tax breaks so it's a bit harder to assess the $$$ they have. I don't know if I would call $300 a week to spend 'poverty'. For some it would be a struggle, for others it would be quite manageable I guess (having lived satisfactorily on $240 a week for a year for myself, Mrs Oakie and two daughters a few years back). Obviously first world and third world 'poverty' are two completely different things!
EDIT: And in Wanganui where my daughter rents @ $220 per week, that makes their poverty line $437 per week.

Yeh I agree, it does depend on where you are living and how much you earning - baring in mind that the 62K is the upper most end of the scale but also as you point housing costs are different depending where you are living.
For me the stats which paint a clearer picture are those for material deprivation - where there are shit load of people who cant cope and would struggle with having to pay a $500 bill in one month. Based on them you probably wouldn't have 270,000 kids in poverty, but still over 200,000. They show the clear difference between Elderly Poverty (which is pretty much non-existant) and Childhood Poverty.
The Commissioner tends to agree:
Under the second approach to measuring poverty, surveys are used to determine the proportion of the population (or children) who cannot afford specific consumption items that most people regard as essential. Such items might include having a raincoat, sturdy shoes and warm clothes, and being able to repair or replace appliances, visit the doctor and keep the house warm in winter. A threshold can then be set, based on the number of items that a family lacks (e.g. three items out of ten), in order to determine the poverty rate. Deprivation measures of this nature provide a more direct indication of poverty than income-based measures as they are an outcome measure based on the standard of living actually achieved. Such measures thus incorporate the ability of a family to use assets, or borrow, to maintain current consumption patterns. Unlike income-based measures, they vividly convey the nature and magnitude of the hardship facing children and their families.
My guess is that INCOME is used more because it is easy to obtain info for (from Census, NZStats, DoL now MBIE Labour workforce / quarterly household surveys. The children's commissioner suggests a comprehensive recording system that involves longitudinal surveys (so going back to the same families and seeing if they have managed to progress out of material deprivation etc.) but such long term studies that involve obtaining information that is not elsewhere and in depth would require more $$$$$$.
Govt. doesn't want to pay $$$$$$ to potentially show a problem that requires more $$$$$$$ to fix.

The economoney is everything, irrespective of country. There have been "protests" around the globe that testify to that fact... and in the grand scale kdc is a shot in the arm for politics if they can't nail him, especially when you consider that he has done nothing wrong than get caught and serve the penance that society was legally required to enforce. Many a rich person has thwarted the legal system by being nothing more than an asset to the country. Deemed not a threat to the public as they had only bent the rules to gain money and didn't physically hurt people. The world is absolutely chocca with scum by that measure, but alas, it isn't illegal to be scum.

Not true, seems to attract a fair amount of sheeple around here. All waving their political opinions in the air, like crazy ladies at a Tom Jones concert waving their knickers.
Bloody funny reading some of the drivel though.
Seems to be the same as religion to me, " my view is right" no "my view is right" and all they are doing is running around chasing each others tails while the ones they are arguing over fill their pockets and practice their lies for when things get a little quiet again.
I love watching the human race bring about it's own demise. Keep up the good work.:2thumbsup

It would be a win for Josef Goebells - the father of Propaganda. It would prove al his theories right. (As if it needed proof .. with his propaganda methods the Nazis convinced a whole lot of people in many counties that it was right to kill Jews ...)
But I'm not sure how likely that outcomes is. In the past, a high voter turnout has seen a shift in favour of Labour and the Left .. it might not always have been a big enough shift for the left to win the Government benches, but it is certainly significant ..
The Right always benefits from low voter turnout ...

I think you'll find that 2,278,989 voters out of a possible 3,070,847, makes it more like a quarter of the electorate.
This was an increase from about 20% in the previous two elections, and may just represent a "foregone conclusion" sentiment in 2011.

Would you rather he did laugh it off? I think actually that the worried look comes because he's only got 5 days to disprove the allegations. I've said it before and i'll say it again ... Dot Com has done it five days before the election because the allegations only have to stand up to scrutiny for that long. Could have done it three months ago but knows the allegations would be disproven in that period. I guess its true what they say "Politics is all in the timing"

Being devil's advocate here, but to extend your anecdote - He's not providing storage for stolen bikes, he's providing storage for bikes, no questions asked. No-one can see the bike you put there but you. Is that much different to a 'self storage' facility really?

Technically correct, but he absolutely knew almost all of the bikes were stolen. Choosing not to look at each bike to see if it was stolen, does not mean that he didn't know, and he charged money (which is how he made the millions) from the people "self storing" the stolen bikes.

Well he was right in the end and so was Key but that's political playing with words again.
Key said GSCB not spying on NZers...true And we don't have a tap on the pacific internet cable.... true
But also true is we have an NSA outpost here at the exchange and of course we have an information sharing agreement with them. Its a bit like a Gang having someone beaten up by their prospects or associates. Technically the gang didn't do the crime but the job gets done. And that's exactly what happens here.
So to think that the govt wouldn't use/access that is not believeable.
And the email, don't think dotcom would be fooled by a fake one, the guy is in the IT business after all.
Govts have spied on their people for generations, we all know that and it doesn't bother me. But they are having to keep this mass surveillance concealed otherwise public will want to know why cant organised crime be stopped or peoples stolen property found. Think about it, wouldn't take much of a decent program to analyse list of stolen goods vs online auctions and ip addresses to start picking up patterns. Same with cellphone movements whose data is recorded and analysed by the telcos to see where to build extra towers etc. Once you pump in a few junkies numbers you could soon extrapolate interactions and map out every tinnie house in the country. And even single use burner phones would get picked up by right analysis.
But if we solve real crime the next on the list is the reckless waste of taxpayer money...

His references to Edward Snowden and Julian Assange as 'traitors' show him to still be a good old governmental puppet.
He probably considers any New Zealander who considers the spying allegations as credible to be a 'traitor'.

interesting read
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/snowden-documents-indicate-nsa-has-breached-deutsche-telekom-a-991503.html
Treasure Map is anything but harmless entertainment. Rather, it is the mandate for a massive raid on the digital world. It aims to map the Internet, and not just the large traffic channels, such as telecommunications cables. It also seeks to identify the devices across which our data flows, so-called routers.
Furthermore, every single end device that is connected to the Internet somewhere in the world -- every smartphone, tablet and computer -- is to be made visible. Such a map doesn't just reveal one treasure. There are millions of them.
Treasure Map allows for the creation of an "interactive map of the global Internet" in "near real-time," the document notes. Employees of the so-called "FiveEyes" intelligence agencies from Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which cooperate closely with the American agency NSA, can install and use the program on their own computers. One can imagine it as a kind of Google Earth for global data traffic, a bird's eye view of the planet's digital arteries.
I should have invested in PopCorn Futures ....:corn:

His references to Edward Snowden and Julian Assange as 'traitors' show him to still be a good old governmental puppet.
He probably considers any New Zealander who considers the spying allegations as credible to be a 'traitor'.

FFS - the govt, google, FB, microsoft you name it are ALL interested in what you say and do every day. ALL of them have the ability to weasel there way into your life and if interested will know way more about you than you might be comfortable about...
Nothing has ever been really 'private' since man invented language and at every great leap forward from mail to radio to the telephone a man in a dark suit has been closely following along behind with a keen interest... How is this news....
The funny thing about this is the KDC is using hacked and stolen info to 'prove' it. Hes just as bad as they are and is answerable to no one. Freedom is entirely relative and I sure wouldnt want KDC's version of freedom thanks...

Technically correct, but he absolutely knew almost all of the bikes were stolen. Choosing not to look at each bike to see if it was stolen, does not mean that he didn't know, and he charged money (which is how he made the millions) from the people "self storing" the stolen bikes.I knew many people who put their own bikes there and had them stolen by the US Government!

Well he was right in the end and so was Key but that's political playing with words again.
Key said GSCB not spying on NZers...true And we don't have a tap on the pacific internet cable.... true
Well........Confronted with documentary evidence of a GCSB program called SPEARGUN to tap the Southern Cross Cable (https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2014/09/15/new-zealand-gcsb-speargun-mass-surveillance/) and spy on all our international internet traffic, Key declassified and released documents (http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA1409/S00233/pm-responds-to-incorrect-surveillance-claims.htm) relating to a completely different GCSB spying program (http://img.scoop.co.nz/media/pdfs/1409/Business_Case_4.pdf). SPEARGUN is about tapping cables. Key's CORTEX is about using off-the-shelf software to protect select government departments and key businesses from malware. There's no relation between the two.
But also true is we have an NSA outpost here at the exchange and of course we have an information sharing agreement with them. Its a bit like a Gang having someone beaten up by their prospects or associates. Technically the gang didn't do the crime but the job gets done. And that's exactly what happens here.
So to think that the govt wouldn't use/access that is not believeable. and why does an internal US security service have an outpost in NZ? - are we now just a complete vassal state of the USA? There is the cynical flippant "yes" answer, but, it is totally unacceptable any way you want to put it, and for a government to allow this would have been considered Treason, in earlier times! As it is, they are breaking New Zealand law. They need to be arrested and prosecuted. If convicted, they need to be jailed, deported, and their equipment and buildings seized as instruments of crime.
We should not allow foreign spies to break the law here. Its that simple. Stopping them is supposed to be the GCSB and SIS's job. If they permit it, or turn a blind eye, we can only conclude that they don't work for us anymore and that they need to be shut down.
And the email, don't think dotcom would be fooled by a fake one, the guy is in the IT business after all. - quite true.
Govts have spied on their people for generations, we all know that and it doesn't bother me. ........... and that makes it right and acceptable? The current level of spying on their people is now something the Stasi could only have dreamt about. Yes, there is a case for "keeping an eye on the odd person", but, mass surveillance of the sort now being utilised is neither necessary nor ethical. The fact that it doesn't bother you is also disturbing, in that, if you are prepared to accept this level of surveillance, what are you ultimately prepared to accept - and why do you accept it? Nothing to hide so nothing to worry about. You aren't alone in this - it is rather disturbing the number of people who are quite prepared to be spied on in this way....only collecting metadata......it's still "being spied on", and we have a right to have some privacy in our lives. When it becomes legal for us to go trawling through all the MP's emails, phone calls, etc, etc, then maybe, but until then........

The reason I'm not so disturbed about it is at least they will be collecting CORRECT data on me. As opposed to the modern day citizen gossip stasi who've corrupted the data once its been relayed more than once...
I used to be quite a private person then trucking through the night listening to the CB conversations of all and sundry I realised we don't really have any privacy. There are guys out there that all they do all night long is blab on about so and so, his family, where they live, what cars they own etc... And of course this extends to other industries and jobs too. People around us know much more of our private business than many would care to admit.
And the volume of data is so over whelming that your only going to be in the gun sights should you wish to stoop into the world of politics or be a key prosecution witness at a police corruption trial...
That TV show person of interest summed it up well, the machine collects so much data but only a portion of it can be acted upon.
Really if anything we should be worried about the collection of our DNA data if anything. As race specific bioweapons will be the next weapon of choice should we have another hitler on the scene. Doesn't look like there's a whole lot more to dig, Key won't have many problems getting in, KDC made a dick of himself last night ( his staff would agree ) and Cunliffe has forgotten that he has some people behind him ( who largely don't like him ) hence we don't see or hear from them in the media.

Well it can't get here soon enough for me. Crime is epidemic and we have a whole generation of brain damaged ADHD kids with no sense of right or wrong emerging into a society with no jobs for them.
The zombie apocalypse is here. Alcohol will probably subdue them for another decade or so then we will have a tidal wave of disaffected non acheivers running rampant.
A police state does create many jobs so in a paradoxical way it may even out...
Looks like the fun ended today anyway with the announcement of new speed limits, 60-80k on low volume rural highways. Eg all the good stuff that bikes like to play on.

For a big guy, he's done a pretty remarkable vanishing act since the weekend.
Maybe he had a Mega Download in the bog, or perhaps he's invented a Mega Diet and he's so slim people don't recognise him.
My conspiracy theory... Maybe he wears a fat suit under those clothes and that's why he sweated so much at "the moment of truth", now he's taken it off changed from wearing black and voila....disappeared  After all you only see from elbows and knees down uncovered, and neck up.

… The National Party spin doctors have been hard at work, painting him [Dotcom] as an evil German trying to subvert democracy, throwing in a side smear of “secret Nazi”.
The first big charge against him is that he used his wealth to “try to sway the election”. On that front, his mistake was probably being open about what he was up to.
To be clear, this is not at all like the people who pay $10,000 a head for a National Party fundraiser, hoping to entrench their entitlement.
Not a bit like Alan Gibbs, who uses his wealth to keep a party with less than 1 per cent of the vote alive, and pumping its warped ideas into the national dialogue.
Not like Colin Craig, who is using his wealth to finance a platform that many find whacky. No, this is finance provided to the left wing, and as such, is inherently evil. …
Excuse me if I don’t judge this man based on the spin put out by people who engage in dirty politics. Maybe Kim Dotcom can’t be trusted, but we know for sure they can’t be.
And from the Herald as well......http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11331554
Which is how I tend to look at it.
His main fault was getting involved in politics - he won't do that again.....

Internet mogul Kim Dotcom says the United States Justice Department destroyed his marriage.
New Zealand police carried out a raid on his Auckland mansion in 2012 on behalf of the FBI, which is overseen by the US Justice Department.
Dotcom is facing privacy charges relating to his file-sharing website Megaupload and has been fighting against his extradition to the US.
Dotcom said his break up with wife Mona was connected to the stress.
"I blame the Department of Justice for that," he told the New Yorker on Sunday (NZT) in a virtual interview.
"My wife and I we were happy before the case.
"We were living in this completely happy bubble in our happy world and we didn't have any issues."
The couple had five children and had a long term plan, he said.
"This whole raid, everything that happened with the case, you know the continuos restraints and attacks, they just made it so difficult to live a normal life that it affected our relationship.
"For me that is the single, biggest negative outcome of all of this that I've lost my family.
"I will have my kids grow up with a broken family and I will not be with my wife who I loved and that's very sad."
The couple had been married for five years before Dotcom announced the split in May.
Megaupload, Dotcom and other parties filed a motion in the Federal District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia on Friday US time asking the court to dismiss the copyright claims that make up the core of the US government's criminal case against the defendants, his lawyer Ira Rothkin said.

If only we had the opportunities then that are available now our music portfolio would be huge and our copyright infringements worthy of imprisonment
