I will preface this by stating that I am not a smart man. Starter motor started having trouble about two months back, flipping between turning the engine over with gusto and then turning over slowly and then not at all. All the old girl was making was a loud click noise. CLICK, every time I pressed the starter. Before my rookie attempt at a fix it was not turning the engine over at all. Just clicking. These is an important detail.
So I started the fix. I did not check the battery before looking around for a starter motor/solenoid, which I should have done, and still have not done. What I did do was purchase a second hand solenoid. Dicking around with my bike, looking for the solenoid to my starter, I took off the magneto cover. Some cogs fell out - the ones which connect the starter to the engine. I put them back, and since I couldn't find a solenoid in sight I replaced the cover and took off the starter to have a look for this goddamn solenoid. There was a bolt left over from the cover. I repeat, I am not a smart man.
So I take out the starter, pull it completely apart. No solenoid. Put it back together, sloppily. There is a big 3" bolt which would held together the starter. Slipped the starter back into place and screwed it up.
Of course, it just sits under the seat, unlike the diagrams of car solenoid/starter combos I had seen on the internet. Put my newer one in place and went for the starter. The old girl still doesn't start, but this time there is a whirring noise from either the starter or the gears which help turn over the engine. It doesn't sound nice, but at least its a different sound, hey? Bump start her, turns over beautifully and I take her for a spin. Come back, magneto cover is leaking pretty significantly.
I am not a smart man. For the record, the speedo is also broken. Can someone direct me as to what I should do next? Does someone want to come North Shore and help me fix her up for a box of beers?
Cheers for the help.
