Just pirate shit and get it for free. Even if a cheap option existed I still wouldn't do it.
Sky would have to be one of the most worthless things you can subscribe to. Would only ever do it for the NRL and I stream that shit for free anyway

SkyTV knows that their monopoly is under serious threat. I tried a Netflix trial back in Jan just out of curiosity. Quickly realised that I'd get way more for my $14 a month than what I was getting from Sky. Cancelled Sky Sport, Movies and HD (kept the base package for MYSky and the kids channels). Upgraded my broadband to VDSL 150GB. Now I have Netflix and Hulu through my AppleTV and still saving $40 a month.

Damned fine points. We binned sky sports last year after they canned the EPL and I've been mulling over binning the rest of it for something internetz based. Will give Slingshot the once over as the season will be starting on a couple of weeks. Fuckin crazy that sky and tvnz won't let them advertise their services though... thought there'd be laws against that shit.

I'm a quality snob as "copies" drive me mad when the sound dips out or is too dark to watch.

The broadcasting equivalent of King Canute*
*Except we know that Canute was actually demonstrating that he couldn't hold back the tide...don't we?

Been running Netflix through a gateway in the states for a couple years now.
Sky is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. Good on Slingshot.

TBH, I have Sky and wouldn't be without it - yes its a bit $$$ but CI and other things are great.
That said,. I refuse to pay a premium for some channels to play content delayed from the US when I can get it in the time frame I want it (and for freeeee)

Fuck Sky. Money grubbing bastards that crowd are. I'm quite happy not having to filter through a bunch of shit and just get what I want directly via the computer, via paid services or 'free'. Hell half of TVNZ is free online so I don't know WTF they think they're protesting about.
thought there'd be laws against that shit.
There probably is, but then they probably have some stupid advertising contract where you waive rights or some shit.
Random tidbit for the day, to have an account with NZ post you are giving them the right to search your premises/house at anytime pretty much under the guise of searching for stamp counterfeiting machines.

They are not as separate as you might think ..
On 24 November 2011 Sky announced they had formed a partnership with Television New Zealand to launch a new low-cost pay television service during the first half of 2012. This is called Igloo and Sky has a 51% share in the venture.
And I believe that sometime around 2004 TVNZ sold their shares in Sky (Yes, they were shareholders) to a Rupert Murdoch company ... but those shares have since sold them on ..
(PS: did you know that our favourite Government corporation ACC hold a 3.36% shareholding in Sky ??? So subscribe to Sky - the more ACC gets from its investments the less it will take from us ...)

I understand the sky position, but as TVNZ is state owned I would have thought they had an obligation not to turn down advertising revenue so that we can get better programming. I'll take the third tui on the right please.

Hmmm ... it's still a business and the Government still wants their share of profits - so they have to make profits .. telling customers to go and watch a different channel is a bad idea ... In 2012 TVNZ paid $11.3million to the Government after declaring a $14.2million after tax profit ...
Revenue comes from ads sure - but they can only sell ads if they have a significant number of viewers ... and telling viewers to go elsewhere is a very bad idea ..
And what do you mean by "better programming"? Who's idea of "better"? And do you seriously think that if TVNZ had more money we would get better programmes? (See above - the Government scooped out most of their profits - which might have gone to better programmes) They will only broadcast the programmes that show, on a cost/benefit basis, the ones that pull in the most viewers ..
When I worked in the medias there was a well-used saying; "No-one ever went broke underestimating the audience" ... The populous want to watch crap ...

All fair enough, but it's still only an ad that offers people a choice and looking at it any further than that is politicking and censorship.
lol@programming... read something this morning that basically said that what's on offer in NZ is shite and that people are taking up these services for that reason. If something looks good, I'll watch it irrespective of what channel it's on.

If you can - see if you can sign up for Amazon prime via Slingshot. It's also got a movie streaming service which is quite handy and reasonably priced.

We havent had a tv in 2 years now. Dont miss it ether.
Anything we really want to watch we get online.
surprising to realise how much time you piss away sitting in front of a TV once you get rid of it - theres a whol lot more time to spend on other things like bikes and the gym, and, god forbid, actually hanging out with people.

Don't worry - they will repeat it during the week. I stopped halfway though so I would wake up in time for the GP race ... singing 10-nil, 10-nil, 10-nil .... (And they will rescreen the Moto3 and 2 races as well (which I slept through) ..
