View Full Version : Winding back km on speedos a real problem?

The End

I'm looking at a bike which is a 2001 model and has done just 25,000kms. If what the dealership tells me is true, the bike has been imported from Japan and has all of the NZ certifications/required to be road worthy.

But it makes me wonder, 25,000 over 13 years is just over 1900kms a year which seems...odd.

Am I being too paranoid or there a possibility the speedo has been tampered with? Is this a common issue?

if it is a recent import I would have no problem accepting that data, as the proof needed these days for imports and there milage is very different to the old days when 95% of them were bullshit. And that milage is common for Japanese vehicles, they are only part time vehicle users

There are plenty of bikes that age and much older with those sorts of km on them.

If the condition is consistent with the milage indicated then I wouldn't worry about it.

Look at key indicators, like wear on footpegs (brand new is likely hiding something), scuffing on the frame in that area etc. The sorts of things that are really hard to hide and good indicators of how much it's been ridden.

However, yes, there are bikes that do very little mileage. I was so sorely tempted to save this 06 Tuono, done 5-600km a year: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-762987678.htm

All of these have averaged less than 1000km/year.

I bought a 1993 ZZR1100 with 30k on the clock when it was 17 yrs old.. and it was genuine mileage. Plenty of bikes out there that are 'summer weekend' rides.

My bike is 3700 after 1.5 years.

I should ride it more often but don't get a lot of spare time lately.

Problem with jap imports is the time they sit in traffic. 25000 Kms, but probably done 4x that in running time.....

Arse after looking at those prices I'd better lower my insurance value :(

That mileage is probably genuine. My GSXR only does around 3,500km a year because it's too unreliable to do more than that.

Still the same shit from a few weeks ago when the charging system fucked out, and I don't have the time, nor means to take it to a non rip off mechanic that I know of. I'm not taking it to a Suzuki dealership.

 You need a nice Honda. Sadly the battery needs replacing now. It's only lasted 9 years and 123k.

No, you need that Tuono... and I guarantee the battery won't last as long as your Hondas (everything else should do though)

Dood...on my K4 GSXR 600 I was commuting daily for work and it never missed a single beat! Had the thing for 5 years or so and it never once skipped a beat...even when I high sided it it still ran like a champ!

Yeah, Suzukis don't like weekend riders. The more you ride them the more reliable they seem to be.
Every time I have gone to a mechanic and said "she's fucked" about a Suzuki he has come back that I need to ride harder faster or longer.

They just don't like sitting. Even a week at a time.

Case in point my DR350. Both the times I have parked it up something else has failed while it was not being used.

Thanks for all your input everyone.

Pleased to say I purchased an 07 Hornet 919 with 21,000 on the clock. :):scooter::scooter:

I don't think you'll be unhappy, if you ever get off long enough to think about it

Enjoy.
