View Full Version : What determines who you vote for?

I was discussing this with a friend earlier this week, after seeing some of the national parties leaked emails, which said that Don Brash should try to buy his way into power by using tax cuts. I didn't have a particular problem with this, however the news seemed to portray that this was a bad thing.
We then got talking about what determines who you vote for.

Do you vote for the party which gives you, the individual the most benefits, or what gives the country as a whole the most benefits?

I want to vote for the ones who don't lie - that's my vote buggered.

I've seen a few interesting policies on various things (too numerous to list) but no one party embodies all the ones I like (and that's assuming they'll actually stick to their supposed policies).

Labour is promising a lot for families, National is digging at speed cameras, revenue gathering, taxation and the 111 sytem in their ads but yeah, like they're really going to do anything to cut the revenue gathering when they've promised income tax cuts - they'll probably up the existing taxes and speed cameras to pay for the income tax drop they've promised.

Libertarianz has some good points but I vehemently disagree with some of their other policies.

NZ First will never get my vote until Winnie is gone and they prove that his replacement isn't as big a liar - and maybe not even then...

And I believe that no matter who you vote for, the government always wins.

I'll probably vote for the same people I voted for ever since I was old enough to vote...... No One!! Don't vote as it only encourages them :nono:

Every time in the past I have voted for whom I feel will do best for the country.

They are all such a lying pack of self serving mongrels that I think I shall vote National for 1 reason.

They are talking of reining in the revenue gatherers.

There should be a maximum term so as to stop career politicians from gorging at the trough too long and so that they realise what it is like to work for a living.

They're also talking of funding the new Auckland roading etc earlier than Clarke has promised - if they rein in the revenue gathering and cut income tax, how do they propose to fund it?

Make no mistake, they will have plans for hitting us harder than ever in order to make more revenue than the previous regime - no political party is going to truly decrease revenue gathering...

All they ever do is change the methods of gathering revenue.

Not just slamming National here, not saying Labour won't come up with new revenue gathering techniques (or increase old ones) if they get back in - just saying they're all thieving bastards

I feel totally disgruntled this year, and don't like any of the dishonest, self-serving bastids. If I could, I'd vote "No Confidence". I have neither a decent candidate in my electorate, nor a decent party to vote for. Might do like son#2, for whom this is his first chance to vote: "Meh... it's not worth the effort of walking up the road to vote..."

I'm basing my vote on the following:

1. Taxation. A lower direct tax take does help boost economic growth.
2. Energy. We need more power stations, and a firmer transmission grid. That requires a return to a central planning system.
3. Defence. At least a sufficient strike force for training purposes.
4. Kyoto. Scrap it.

So far it looks like either National or Act. Probably split my vote.

For me its a case of elimination.
I like national but they have no real leader, brash is all about $. He hasnt done anything outside of economics and that is his primary drive. He made a farse of Dawn Service last ANZAC day which pissed off everyone. And wouldnt know ordinary NZers aside from handshakes and polls. Hes got more time for the US than NZ. And it worries me that national is so keen to get in that they are promising alot more than whats healthy

Winston, I like the dude, NZ needs shit stirrers such as him, although I think hes quite racist. I wouldnt want him in any place of real power as I think his ego would cause the tides to come in wherever he stood. Hes a great underdog, but I wouldnt want to see him as leader.

Greens, like some of their concepts but if you implemented everything that they want then the world would eventually starve to death or die of Cum-By-Ya overload. Painfully socialist. They do really care about the world, but we would have to wipe out 80% of the worlds population to make it work.

Act-there hard line appeals, and to the average redneck there ideas are sound, but I just dont think that they would work. Talking to an expert in corrections (who no longer works there) they said the act ideas would just make our crime rate worse in the long term.

Maori party-yeah right. Im sure i would be far more interested if I was maori, or if it was a pakeha party (oh wait, all the rest are pakeha partys....)

United future/outdoor rec-funnily enough it seem hunters dont like walking anymore and kick up a fuss when doc doesnt let them drive there 4wds everywhere. Sorry that I rant but there ideas on marine reserves stinks to
In short get fucked, let me walk around your home in the middle of the night with a rifle and just say Im chasing game.

Labour-been in a long time, maybe to long, Like national making to many promises and helen lacks pretty and charm in the same way harleys lack performce-ie she has none. Labour has done some stupid spending and have taxed the crap out of us. BUT she hasnt screwed up to royal, she hasnt sold NZ down the river and I basically dont like her but do trust her in the job she does.
A friend had a problem, I cant explain it but it had something to do with uni. She had a hard time finding anyone to help and got shunted around about 5 offices until she ended up talking to the PM. (she was very suprised and nervous) The PM listened to her and sorted it by personally calling some effected parties and working out a solution that worked.

Sometimes NZ is just damn cool.

Well, thats me fucked - no one worth voting for - they're all a pack of lying, self serving, beauracratic c***ts, who deserve neither our votes, money nor sympathy!
None of them have a real plan, or vision of the future. They're ALL scrabbling for votes, in whatever heinous, underhand way they can, whilst, at the same time slagging off everyone else!

...Not just slamming National here, not saying Labour won't come up with new revenue gathering techniques (or increase old ones) if they get back in - just saying they're all thieving bastards

Maybe I'm being naive here, but doesn't the majority of tax go back into society - social welfare, public services, roads, police, emergency services, hospitals, schools etc.?

It's all about finding a balance between the money that goes back into society through the government and the money people spend for themselves.
If the money going back to society (through governmental tax) is thought to be too much, then tax cuts seem appropriate.
BUT when I've heard politicians talking about tax cuts they always seem to be appealing to people's greed rather than logically arguing that the current level of tax isn't required.

I'm voting for the parties that I think seem the most honest, that I agree more or less with their ideals and that I think will do a good job governing society.

The Stranger

Good point, erik.

Elections are a bit like shuffling the deckchairs on the Titanic. Some people will be temporarily more comfortable, at the expense of others... But the voices of those urging a timely and orderly evacuation into the lifeboats are drowned by the clamour of the greedy and selfish calling for more blankets to ward off the chill as they enjoy a last brandy and cigar. And the band plays on...

The really important issues for this country are social, racial, environmental, and they are long-term concerns. Those who think the election is all about money in their pockets should ask themselves how long their newly-created prosperity will last.
