A mate of mine back in Blighty has just bought something called a ZX-9R, and he sent me a photo of a similar one, so far, so good....but apparently his has "crash bungs" and a "rear hugger" on it.
Can someone explain in a reasonable non patronising way? Cheers!

crash bungs = the white (not always) things you see stiking out the side of the fairings and they are there to protect the faring in case of a fall. they are also made to bend in a certain whay to protect the sides. They are great for low speed crashes.
rear hugger = not sure what they are sorry

Huggers a rear mudguard, effectively, just mounted very close to the tyre ("hugging" it) rather than the older style rear guard which was mounted further away from the tyre. That's all.

Ta very much, don't know if I feel enlightened or stupid, cos it's obvious now you say....don't suppose that's going to stop your sports bike throwing all that spray in my scootering face when you overtake me though eh?
Get a mud flap (nice big long one, with checkers...)!

Indeed it won't, that's the mudguard's job. Not that it will do that either.
The hugger is intended to stop water and crap getting sprayed over the rear monoshock and the back of the engine of the owners bike.
If the bike (or the owner) has upwardly mobile pretensions (MVs, some Ducatis) the hugger will be made of carbon fibre.
