View Full Version : Good bike for the Sandpit?

I've been taking my son to the Sandpit a bit, and am thinking about upgrading my bike so I can keep up with him. I've been using my twin shock XR200 which goes fine but is a bit tiring.
I'm thinking of switching to a 125 2 stroke MX as they look nice and light with more power, but am wondering if it will be just as hard work keeping it in the power band.
I don't go hard, just want to keep up with a 12 year old.
A couple of people have said 125 MX'ers have no torque and need heaps of revving to do anything and wouldn't be suitable, any opinions?

Spokies is making a good suggestion but don't listen too much to the anti-125 MX brigade. To be fast they need to be given plenty of stick, but they aren't all or nothing like you may be lead to believe. Modern 125s make enough power off the pipe to be pottered around on.
I wouldn't suggest one as a first bike but you can ride and they are a bucketload of fun.

There will be lots of times where you will curse a 125 but stick with it and you will become a better rider. You can pick up husky cr/wr125's cheap now and they are fantastic bikes. The other advantage of this is that it would be a perfect stepping stone for your son!
Have fun.

Thanks.
Had a look at specs on a KDX, but they're a bit heavier than I'd like (figure my son will want to move on to what ever I get in the next year).
I'll keep an eye out for a YZ, CR or RM 125 (can't bring myself to buy a green one)

I wouldn't have thought a KDX200 would be heavier than an XR200

I doubt it. My XR200 felt heavier to ride for sure. KDX has twice the power.

KDX are more traily bred I reckon, go with a 125 (unless you are a large bloke), my CR has plenty of power for me at the tracks. Though the challenge of keeping it in the power and keeping the speed up is greater, it is also a greater feeling to nail it.
And don't get too set on keeping in front of the 12year old, those fearless little shits are damn quick :bleh:

Yeahs give him a couple of years and it won't matter what bike you're on.
Nothing quite like having your arse handed to you on a plate by a kid who couldn't even figure out how to work a clutch a couple of years ago.

Yep. He's been riding a DS80 so keeping up with him hasn't been too bad. Problem is he's now got an XR100 which seems to go as fast as my 200 and handle a load better.
It's more about endurance than speed, last ride I was shagged by lunchtime and he was just getting started.
