View Full Version : LAMS, derestriction and full licences?

Hi All,
At some point soon I am going to be taking my CBT2 (once the Magical Money Fairy sends cash my way) and am looking at once this is done at de-restricting my GSX650FU - effectively making it a GSX650F.
http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/docs/lams-faqs.pdf
In the above all it states is that if it is modded in anyway that it is then no longer LAMS approved and so must only be ridden by a Full licence holder. So I am thinking that so long as I tell my Insurance company that is has been modified - I am all above board - I can't find anything about having to re-register with the NZTA.
So thoughts/opinions?

Love you too Akzle - but in seriousness - there is a little bit of Vaguary around a Derestricted LAMS bike - technically you are turning a bike into a different bike (going from a GSX650FU to a GSX650F) do you have to talk with the LTSA or is it just a conversation with your insurance company (assuming you have a full bike licence)

No vaguery. Heaps of rules for vehicle mods. Ignore the LAMS crap and get Googling bhoy.

I wouldnt bother. Sell it and buy another bike. Should get good money being a LAMB bike.

Derestrict it now, who are the testers to know the difference. In the event of an accident would the insurance company even know it's been derestricted? Sell it as a LAMs bike with full power. Should be worth more even

Well, I did, there are rules for doing engine swaps, rules for doing suspensiom mods - the closest I got was the rule about increasing the engine power by more than 20% BUT! I am not sure that applies as the rule indicates that this is to make to make sure that all the other components (Brakes, Chassis, suspension etc.) Are all up to task. Since the bike is identical bar the ECU to its full power brother - so from that pov the Rule doesnt apply

I talked to a dealer about this a little while ago as the GSX650F is not being imported in any great numbers, and may in the future not be imported at all. It's a single wire to the ECU which needs to be disconnected. The insurance is the questionable part. If you tell them the agents may just stare at you and scalp you for a modified bike if they will even write the policy.

It is not another bike, it is the one you bought and the stats written on paper are for it. Any increase from those numbers is an increase from those numbers.
You can't buy a non turbo car and throw and turbo in it without a cert because another model has a turbo, or swap a more power engine in because another model had one of those...legally anyway.
Ignore the other model, it has nothing to do with it. You do not own the other model.
Would they check and who is to know if you DID quietly un-restrict as mentioned are things to mull on/easy route...
Unrestricting it and getting it certed (which will be easy as you mentioned the brakes and everything are the same as the F) i$ the harder/legal route?
But then it is a modified bike, which brings other complications?

Hope that wire doesnt break, best keep an eye on it:shifty:

What sort of HP increase will it get from going from a 650FU to a 650F ( My guess is sweet FA ) ? Also how much will it cost to do it?
If it was me, I'd sell it as it once you have your full and spend the dosh on something that already has full power.

I was wondering before so took a quick gander and it looks to be over double (33 to 86?) but it is hard to find an actual figure for the FU (FU! FU).
I would just do a long term build quality investigation on the effects of having wire #30 from the ECU exposed to the elements...also for fuel economy as by the looks as for some reason the restriction shoots that to hell?!
But that is not the correct way like the OP was asking about.

The way they restricted the 650FU was to flatten it out at about 7K. It will still rev past that point but won't make any more power.

Where'd you find the 33 figure? It looks like UK learner bikes are limited to 35kW but since the GSX650 is such a heavy fucker it'd be allowed up to 49 kW (66hp) before breaking 150kW/T.
Unrestricted model is 85 hp.

No idea. Probably some forum on the front page of a google search. It was certainly nothing official looking.

If all it takes to get the bike derestricted is to cut a wire, cut it, wire it up as a plug. If you sell the bike, give the new owner the choice. If you crash, plug it back up before insurance find out or claim the plug must have come loose in the crash.
