Been overseas a bit again, and saw something that made me think:
"Shit, that's a bit wrong/racist".
Turns out this shit is everywhere. And it's simple a case of someone selling out? Or us not sticking up our hand and saying
"Oi you lot - you can't do that shit - its special".
What am I talking about. We lets start with the concept of having the haka performed by those with no association with Aotearoa?
Linky's:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka_performed_by_non-New_Zealand_sports_teams
I mean sure let the aussies jump in on a drunken one outside a Sydney pub - but international sports teams? Ones that also we All Black replica jerseys? WTF NZ?
We can't munch mash-mellow Eskimo's, wear feather head-dress, call someone a Jew, tell someone to reveal their face..... but an overseas team can parade a performance, in a fancy outfit......pretending to be something that makes a select few of us special (no I am no special enough to don one).
It's just fucking wrong. Respect where respect is due. I dare John Key to make a speech using the words from the Gettysburg Address. Let's see how they like it.
Don't even get me started on the term "Kiwifruit". That's another time we lost our ball.
We need to get mad, we need to fix this kind of shit - it's fucking horrible.

I agree, the haka is a joke. All sports teams and all pissed New Zealanders on their OE should be banned from using it.
Any notion of it being special ended decades ago before every man and his dog wearing black did it at the drop of a hat.

meh.......the haka........as i understand it conceived by te rauparaha whilst hiding under a wahines flax skirt in a kumara pit whilst being hunted by the authorities of the time for crimes including rape and murder........hiding under a womans skirt.......no mana in that in my opinion........so when did it make the jump from a cowardly murderous old prick hiding under a womans skirt to the shit we see today.......if he had stood up and yelled it and challenged his hunters it might then be worthy of respect........sorry but i just don't get it
but in saying all that this is one of the most moving things i have seen............

Oh for fuck sake. Bet half the people who have a problem with people emulating the best rugby team in the world, would also bitch if no one knew what a haka was.
Bitching for the sake of bitching, because you don't feel unique. That makes someone spineless, nothing to do with the country they come from.
Grow some fucken balls yourself cunt. Next time ya see it and feel it's inappropriate, waltz (not that you should because waltzing is German) into the middle and start knocking people out. That would take balls...COCK.

To question the obvious, but isn't the haka kind of loud, and the point of hiding to not be loud?

We can't munch mash-mellow Eskimo's (Yes you can, and Tiptop still sell Eskimo pie icecreams), wear feather head-dress (Yes you can if you go to the right clubs!), call someone a Jew You've been missing axles posts then) , tell someone to reveal their face..... but an overseas team can parade a performance, in a fancy outfit......pretending to be something that makes a select few of us special (no I am no special enough to don one).
Guess our music artists shouldn't perform any Mozart or do cover bands in pubs....
We should close down the strip clubs because their ripping off the culture of New York city gals...
We should ban rally driving as we're ripping off the Scandinavians...
And guess we're ripping of Asian culture with karaoke bars...
Congrats on most epic fail drunken rant ever lol... talking balls try spouting the same on talkback instead of a bike forum lol...

We’re being a bit precious aren’t we?
Do the All Blacks ask permission from Rugby School or the RFU for playing their game?
If it’s being performed by a sports team in a commercial situation then it ceases to be a cultural icon as far as I’m concerned.

'Cause we's right, and all them precious culcha Nazis is wrong.

Why should they? There is probably a ruling from the Waitangi tribunal stating that they have an entitlement to do so.

It would be far more colloquial.
Interesting. So according to the responses, after Hilary became a Pom but before Split Enz became and Aussie band.
I especially loved the comment regarding a pub band doing Mozart. Shit I thought I was wasted......
So to expand the subject a little - what icons on NZ do people hold dear to? If you were overseas - what would be the one thing kiwi that you would notice/miss?
I didn't really have a strong link to the Haka until recently - when I taught my son it. I figure if he was going to be taught how to spell Aluminium wrong least I could do is teach him a great exciting link to his homeland. The kiwifruit thing always pissed me off - but made me angrier when overseas as many people did not even know that a Kiwi was a native bird.
I eagerly await the "Silver Fern" NHL team :corn: Seeing as there is already a "Spirit of Munro" which both does not go fast nor look like it was made on a shoestring budget........

Do you know any of Peru's native birds? Or Laos?

I don't know the native bird of Inca. If I were to guess Eagle/Falcon thing. Laos native bird get you locked up.
But I imagine more people know Maccu Piccu (sp?) than Maori Mythology.... even wikipedia backs up that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C4%81ori_mythology
Which is unfortunate. As The Maori have the best stories. Might have to find some to read to my son.

Sadly, the sheep is losing ground (literally) as a kiwi icon to the bloody dairy cow.

Still one of the best things about NZ - every man is entitled to have grass that tall - if he wants.

Well there we go :p You can't really be angry at people for not knowing about NZ when you/we don't know everything about every other country. It's a big world out there.
In a way I think the less people that know how awesome we have it here by comparison to most, the better
I don't actually know myself if Laos has a national bird, so I think you've nailed that haha, but I think Peru has a wicked looking Parrot type thing that certainly gives the Kiwi a run for its money on the interesting scale.
It's cool you have pride in your country, but Americans do to and I'm sure most have had encounters with a few of them that have taken/do take it to far...don't be one of those people.
