View Full Version : 1990 ZXR 250 - Tail happy

So I just bought a zxr 250 on the weekend and already I've noticed that the ass end tends to want to slip out on me on occasion when I'm on a lean, particularly when taking off and immediately turning but also cornering at other times. Is this normal for these bikes? i know that they have decent bottom end power for a 250 and no traction control but my old fzr 250 was never AS tail happy as the zxr. Am i just giving it too much gas through the corners or could it be tyre pressure? cold tyres? tread depth? i really don't have a clue so any help is appreciated.. cheers!

Check your tyre or take it to a motorcycle tyre shop and have them check and explain what you're looking at as they do.
Sounds like it might be one of those commuting tyres with a harder compound in the middle that's a bit low on tread. No dramas.
As for replacements, I went for a Perilli Sports Demon last time on my 250, and it's been awesome, but going to try a Kenda K671 next which has great reviews for 250s.
Don't go to cheap or you'll regret it in the rain.

If you're looking for a replacement tyre, I cannot recommend the dunlop alpha 13s enough. Brilliant grip and they warm up in the blink of an eye
can't help with the tyre you have though - could be ANY of the things you listed

I'm guessing the bikes warranted?
Start with tires & pressures then wheel bearing, shock pivot, swingarm, head stock bearings etc. Could be play somewhere, dodgy tires or your bum telling you porkies.

I don't see the problem or why you would want to fix it.

What's the tyre pressure and tread depth like? Were they cold?

Sorted it out, well more found out what the problem was.. I have a Bridgestone Battlax on the rear atm that seems to have hardened over time so I need a new tyre. Its a bitch of a size to find though. If anyone knows where to get hold of a 150/60 - 18" rear tyre that would be appreciated!

Shinko 006 Podium, check the reviews though, otherwise you can go slightly bigger or smaller depending on your bike (160/6018 might fit?).
Have a bit of a nose around google.
They have an annoying as shit website but cycletreads have a good range, might be good to check to see your options.

We're only having some fun, don't get uptight. It sounds very simple, either tyre pressure is way off or tyre is rooted

There is no malice behind the humour man from most on here. Just have a laugh and throw some shit back.
Once you get old and no one wants to shag you anymore like this lot they start losing their minds and forget what it was like to start out not knowing the answers to everything in life
The traction control comment on a 250 was funny in all fairness :innocent:
Good luck with the bike!

Any tire with Shinko or Kenda(or similar) on the side wall you'll probably better off riding on what you have... just saying :scooter:

Absolutely nothing bad would happen... Unless you shut off the throttle and high side it. Trust me, I'm a motorbike drifter and a doctor.

The info didn't copy and paste well
Is your rear rim 18x4?
You could use the 140 so the back of the bike isn't raised due to the tyre OD
VJ21 RGV 250 had 18x4 rims as well and work good with 140 rear

Pretty sure I put a 160 battleaxe on the rear of my zxr250, made a noticeable difference to the handling, but obviously any new tyre will be an improvement from your hardened one
