View Full Version : Quads on the road?

Hi All.
I suffered a major foot trauma in Afghanistan in 2006 and after all the rehab etc, found I couldn't ride my bike anymore due to the lack of flexion in my left ankle. I bought a Can-am Outlander 800 quad-bike, (Picture below), so I could get out on the road again as most of the controls were on the handle-bars.
I've just moved to NZ after leaving the British Army but it looks like I'll not be able to use the Quad over here due to the NZTA licensing categories, (EA & EB), neither of which allow me to use the Quad like a normal bike on the road, (well not for more than 3kms anyway).
I know rules is rules but does anyone have any suggestions/tips on how I could get round the Licensing issues?
Thanks all.
QW

You would be able to ride a Can-Am Spyder with no problems due to licencing...

Welcome to the forum mate. As for the quad, I really cant see you getting around the rules. Plenty of others will be along with their thoughts.

There was a road legal quad in ruakaka over 20 years ago, he used to ride it to whangarei and back; slowly.
it had a full canopy and windscreen, and car tyres. Plus all the lights etc.

quads suck goats balls on the road, why the hell would you.
can-an spyder was my first thought, too. or, if you want something less gay, a trike.

The basic ones aren't really any more expensive than an Outlander 800 either. And 1000 times better suited to road riding.

How does the lack of ankle rotation stop you riding mate?

Would you ride a bike again if the gear shifting problem could be overcome?

Have heard of people rigging up a linkage to shift gears on the right, then footbrake is done with a thumb lever.
I doubt there's an exemption to ride quads on the road, would be pretty dicey in any case
Otherwise, yeah, Can Am

Easier to have an electric shift mounted on the handlebar , i have a friend that hooked one to his mx bike when he lost a leg,

If the only issue is shifting gear and you don't want to go the the modifying route then you could always get a DN01 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/cruiser/auction-714093883.htm) or VFR1200 with DCT (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-773675315.htm).

You couldn't be arsed changing the "n" to the "m" that it is most definitely supposed to be while you were there. Half a job.

Ride your quad on 2 wheels (either pulling the mother of all wheelies or just going on the 2 wheels on the side) if you get pulled over claim its a motorcycle :innocent::innocent:

Cool! You could register it as a hearse and it probably will be!

Translogic do a good system although pricey, seem some pingel systems used on sidecars which are cheaper and nowhere near as good

If it has one wheel at the front it deserves a full-on drone-launched Hellfire missile strike.

My father wanted another bike but at 73 and having had 3 knee and 2 hip replacements he couldn't handle a normal bike any more. Enter 1 Can Am Spyder with the electronic shift. He got a RS-S and we added Rivco floorboards, an extended foot brake lever and a hand brake lever that overrides the normal foot brake.
Means he can operate everything bar the park brake from the bars (he can also use the foot brake) and his feet are now in a more neutral position. Old bugger has had it for a year and loves it to bits.
