Hi All,
I need some advice with regards to a new helmet I've brought. It's a Scorpion EXO-1000 Air. http://www.motomail.co.nz/estore/style/sche1000dark.aspx
I tried it on in the shop and it fitted pretty good. I talked with the staff there about what kind of riding I do and what bike I ride. The Scorpion was one brand that was suggested.
However as I've now received my bike and finally had a chance to take it for a ride I've realised just how unsuitable this helmet is for me. Being that I ride a 'sportsbike' I'm leaning forward a decent amount which is causing the "brow" of the helmet to come into view way more than it should. It's ok for riding around town however when riding at 100kmp/h and hitting the corners the top part of the helmet comes into view too much for my liking.
Now on the motomail website their returns policy states the helmet must be in brand new condition with all packaging etc and must not have been "taken for a ride" so I guess that means I have no option that to sell it on and start again?

I've tried rotating it back a little to lift it but then it doesn't feel like it's sitting right. Will have another go tomorrow.

I have an Exo-1000 AIR in 'Mana' myself.
Yeah, the top part can be 'in view' a little. I find it a pretty minor problem myself though. In fact the brow can be handy during sunstrike periods :sunny:
Chin up, lad. I find lifting the head a little helps.
Now, it IS a little noisy, the vents on the top are fragile, the thing leaks a bit around the visor, the visor attachment system is fiddly... but they're all minor things really.

My 2c. I've had a scorpion exo 1000 for 16 months. It's quiet and the anti fog actually works, although its starting to get a touch of fog now (16 months for a pinlock isn't too bad).
The field of view has never been a problem on my upright, naked bike. I was sold on the helmet by the salesman saying it was designed for upright riding.
The cons are at any speed over 130-140ish it seems to get lift and pulls up and only stays on my head thanks to the chin strap. The air system loses pressure after a few minutes, it would be amazing if it could hold some air.
I've bought a shoei now, xr1100..... Even with ear plugs (plugs4lugz) in I get ringing in my left air from the amount of wind noise on the left side of the helmet (right side is quiet.... Fucking weird) it is unbearably loud. I've reverted back to the scorpion. The fit isn't as tight anymore but I can live with it.
Is your scorpion exo a small? Trade you for a shoei.

Thats because the helmet will be symmetrical but your head is not. You may be able to get different size pads which could help or a whisper kit.

A radical thought would be to go back to Motomail with the helmet and receipt and ask them.

Scorpion helmets eh? Learn something new every day. I'm happy with my KBC, So think I would buy another one of them or another Shoei.

All helmets these days have removable padding and such between your head and the polystyrene inner.
is adding a bit extra padding on top of your head an option?...it would alter the way it fits, lifting it a bit...?
Can't find any helmet myself that fits me perfectly, so have adapted my old one a bit, and with whisperkit and balaclava it now works a treat.

My thoughts also. They are good to deal with so wouldn't think you would have an issue with them.

I feel a bit guilty because I recommended the Scorpion exo 1000 to Galaxy. I've had mine a couple of years and I'm totally happy with it. It's light and comfortable and I haven't had any of the problems mentioned, other than the visors are fiddly to take on and off. I would not change it. I ride a naked bike and get no wind noise.

First, have you checked the pinlock seal is still airtight to the visor, may need adjusting.
2nd, check Shoei is sealing around the visor with a very thin bit of plastic,(I use the Shoei sticker that came in the box)
you may need to adjust it(google is your freind)hope this helps.

I get the noise on the left in my LS2 (although not as bad as you do by your description) so the comment about head shape is interesting. Might try some padding when it shrinks down a bit because it should get worse when that happens if that is the cause.
Bike shops that won't let you try/test would really benefit from test lids or a wee wind tunnel considering the price of some helmets, and how different we all are. But I guess with the cost involved with either option...

My 2c. If you spend a lot of your working day in front of a desk looking a a monitor you may find your neck does not arch as far as it should.
I certainly found when I went from the gsx1100f to the Hayabusa my top field of vision was impaired by my helmet of the time. So much so I took the sunshield strip off. Fortunately(?) one of my staff dropped my helmet from a great height onto a concrete floor. Next helmet had a much larger visor but the brim was still an effective sunshield.
A year later, not so much. My neck was more limber and curved more when in the tuck.

Not that one would venture this far over the posted speed limit huh ;) I've tested mine today and I don't have this issue :P

Bender no need to feel bad bud. They look really nice and the fit is snug, the fitted pop down glasses is good and pinlock works really well. I tested it again today through the Waihi-Whanga-Thames twisties and when getting right over it becomes a real problem. I tried lifting it back again today and whilst the field of view is more open the fit of the helmet is off and doesn't feel natural. Just have to put it down to experience.

Googling actually helped, I found another forum with a guy having the exact same issue but right side. Cured the issue by buying a pair of pads off ebay that fit in the ear holes of the helmet. The ear holes are wider to accommodate speakers. So plugged with these, it stops the noise. And a whisper kit for good measure. I'll order this stuff off ebay then take the helmet to boyds to get the visor checked/adjusted.

Hey all, just brought a Caberg flip front. Have huge windage problems and the screen fogs up at low speeds (50 km/h) forever adjusting visor while traveling around town, huge hassle and air vents didn't help much. My old Givi used to pull up at speeds above 50 km/h but had half as much windage problems and no fogging…. Can anyone suggest a quiet brand with no fogging?
Have approached wholesaler and they have agreed to swap out for a full face rather than flip front, to see if problem is solved.

I have always found hjc good as long as you avoid the bargain basement models. E.g spend over $180.
Not as flashy as other brands. Not as exciting as having the same model as Rossi. Not as cool as having all the internal (infernal?) screens.
They have good sharp ratings, meet or exceed gov standards. Don't break the bank, even for the fancier models. I am about to retire my 5th one for age reasons and I have retired two for damage reasons.
I have never had issues with visor parts failing.
Pinlock on my fg-15 had been a revelation.
I have had a couple of vent bits fail due to abuse. ( I tend to click them when walking with helmet in hand.)
Linings hold up to daily use for Half a decade just fine.
I once bought a shoei that has sat on the shelf except for a few rides because of the loss of field of view and additional noise.
Not sexy, just good. A bit like Hondas.

Shark! Best helmets ever! I'm grabbing an Evoline 3 at some stage.
Heaps of adjustments on the visor (like 8 to 10) so you can just crack it a tiny bit at night in the rain (rather than the half open over 80 or nothin on my LS2), really great sharp ratings and the prices are not toooo out there if you hunt around.
Maybe there are major flaws I've missed but I don't know why they are not more popular. I wasn't a fan of my first one because of noise till I tried a few other helmets and realized how good it was in comparison to what else was out there.

Not as cool as having all the internal (infernal?) screens.
Initially I swore off the internal sun visors because they weren't as good as having the whole visor tinted - and they still aren't. However, for my purposes, being able to ride with jaw up, sun visor down, gives me the sunglasses/eye protection I need. There is still a gap along the bottom, and you're also looking through more layers. On upright bikes, the layers all align while looking at the clocks, and on head down bikes the top part is slightly distorted. I've also fitted a smoke main screen, which is better than full dark tint for night, and during the day I can use smoke plus the tinted sun visor, as the clear plus tinted sun visor wasn't dark enough.
OP, chalk it all up to experience. I have 3 helmets I'm using regularly right now and I've thrown away 5 helmets (age or accidents) and I've been riding about 9 years. Every helmet teaches you something which you add to your knowledge (fark, that's almost a helmet a year... I better find a 9th ).

Working in "the shop" I saw a few disappointed faces because we could not get replacement sun visors after stock one was scratched or it had been used so much the mechanism was no longer positive.
Shark were a bit of an exception, but almost all the daily riders I saw at the shop with a shark said they update every 2-3 instead of 5-6 because of lining and mechanism issues. Which seems at odds with ( at the time) 5 year warrantee.
They don't make them big enough for my cranium so I'll never experience one. Shark or sun visor.

That make in my cranial capacity is one thing, that import here is another. HJC do a few shells in my size. Only import one. Shoei do a couple in my size, only import one and only occasionally.
My first helmet was an FFM that was a little too small but short hair made it bearable. Then I had a custom made FFM. Since then I have only been able to find 2 brands.
Aria, Agv, bell and schuberth AT&T make in my size but don't import here.
I can buy a schuberth adventure here if I am happy with a BMW branded helmet on a Honda. Or Suzuki. Lol. That would be like having a Harley Davidson jacket on a marauder.

(16 months for a pinlock isn't too bad).
I've been using the same pinlock for some four years without a problem. That would be about 80,000km of riding. Never had a problem with it. Apart from scratching it, I can't see how it would "wear out"..?

My first SHARK (RSX) lasted 5 years. Used everyday no problem. also didn't have any issues with mechanism which I thoroughly tested (need to swap between clear and dark visor on a daily basis in winter). Have been using the SHARK Race-R Pro for the past 18 months or so. same story - no mechanism issues and the liner etc it holding up really well... No complaints here!

So that would be two of the pricier sharks?
Maybe as with most brands the difference in price is mostly build quality?
Or maybe I only ever heard back from those who were replacing them?

I had a Shark RSI, fitted good. I'd have been happier with a different colour/desgin but that's not important compared to the overall workings of the helmet. Visor was easy to remove, removeable cheek pads.

I was a Shoei man for quite a few years but got a Shark RSR2. Then another. Great helmets for the Faired VTR and the SV1000. Bit noisier on the Bonnie.
The only criticism I have is the cheap plastic bits keep wearing out or falling off. My Pillion has a Shark RSI and the cold kiwi trip she lost one of the plastic bits of the top of hers too, and its only a couple years old.
Nice helmet, good safety rating but the above will send me to look at other brands when replacement time comes around.

Update:
Took the helmet back to Boyds, they didn't promise any improvements in noise because they knew it was a very loud helmet. But they agreed to send it back to Whites and get it looked at. The visor was sealing fine, the vents were all fine. So for good measure they refitted the pinlock and added some foam plugs into the ear cavities. Free of charge.
The results. I went to Auckland on Friday after work, and back down to Hamilton this arvo. 1000000x better, no ringing in my ears now, far less wind noise. It's actually quieter than my scorpion exo1000 air now :2thumbsup:
The only down side is, the new pads push in my ears a bit, but as with all helmets/foam, it'll mould to my head soon enough, and it wasn't uncomfortably annoying.
