Getting into the motorcycle world (Toxicable)

So as you can guess im new here, i'm currently a uni student looking at buying a motorcycle. I was into the dirt bikes when i was much younger so i do have some experience with them. I'm about to get my licence and was thinking of buying a Suzuki GW 250, but what im not so sure about are the costs involved with owning one. I live in Auckland and if anyone could give me the approximate prices of the general maintenance things that need to be done eg, breaks, tyres, oils etc And how often they need to be done :)

4) if you have to ask, you can't afford. you run a car? a bike's cheaper. take the bus? a bike's cheaper. mum drops you everywhere? giz a turn on your mum.

Breaks will cost you heaps, depending on how fast you were going before you broke it.

I don't see the point in a bigger bike. For one i am rather short and when sitting on one of these in a store i wasn't quite standing flat-footed. Also im be mainly riding it from/from Uni with the occasional visit to the parents which is about a 1.30 ride.

As for cost, i can afford it. But im the kinda of person that would like to have all the costs lined up so i can plan much in advance

Motorcycles have brakes, but I'm not sure about morotcycles.

Then you may struggle to fit in around here. Most spend far more than planned far more often than planned. Roflmao

Your adventure into riding is yours and yours alone. Yours will differ from everyone else's while being the same.

Ultimately you need to decide what you are prepared to spend and how you intend to ride. Grab the least stuff that will achieve that and then find out what you really need.
By least stuff I mean suitable boots, pants, jacket, gloves helmet and bike.

If you have a will so inclined this can be less than 5k on the road including insurance and reg. big you have a bigger chequebook than bucket of will power you can easily spend $10k a year for the rest I your life and still drool a little when the newer models get released.

Get package deals where you can. Most shops that won't do discounts will if you are buying 3 or more items.

Shop around.

Be prepared to negotiate. Something I learned from my first time around is you will pay full retail on more than you need if you keep just saying ok to everything offered.
After a little learning including a second bike and working in a car dealership my advice for dealerships weather buying some gear or gear and a bike make it clear you don't care for the prices of individual items only the total.
Taking this approach I normally don't end up saving any money, but I get much higher quality gear for the same price as cheaper stuff.

Why are you starting out riding?

If it's primarly for emotive reasons, then no-one can tell you what it's gonna cost, cos you will find a way to spend any spare money regardless.

If it's for financial reasons, you're gonna spend the same, roughly*, as a Honda Civic.

* Depending on whether you're the sneakers, jeans and hoody type - or whether you're the ATTGATT type - or somewhere inbetween

There's a few reasons: i need transport to and from Uni and i go to Auckland Uni so parking is really expensive if i were to get a car and bikes are free, also easier it's easier ride around the city in a bike than car.

Also from my experience when i was young, i do rather enjoy riding.
