Fuck it.

Near the start of the Desert Road I went round a 25 corner at around 50. Gonna make easy but the whole lane was covered in some greasy shit. The bike just hit the tarmac instantly and I kissed the barrier.

I suppose if I was more experienced I would have seen the signs earlier, but it was a blind corner and the shadows hid the difference in colour of the tarmac.

I am never wearing jeans on the open road again. fucking noobish thing to say now I know. I have a decent jacket and gloves and they took the brunt of it with barely a scratch, but my right knee on the jeans just ripped open, I got a 50 cent piece scratch which I've bandaged up with a hankerchief. Fix it up when I get home. Thing is this could of happened around town too.

Still runs fine and seems straight enough where it counts. most of the damage is superficial but I need a front brake lever (and corduba trousers)before I chance making it home where i'll try tidy it up a bit. It ain't worth spending much on anyway. Needs a hammering in places.

I was amazed how little it hurt, guess I was very lucky that I was only doing 50, and that I hit the barrier square on.

Just a warning, there is over 10km of grease on the left lane of the desert road when heading south, be careful.

About insurance:

I have full coverage with Protecta but... I'm a Learner Licenced rider with no L plate who had an accident on the open road...good luck.
I seriously doubt the cost will be more than my excess anyway.

Should I bother informing them or am I legally obliged to do so.
The bike will probably have devalued hugely unless I replace ALL the fairing :).

Mate shit luck!! Always a worry when ridding out long distances. Just part of the risk we all take. Should say though, jeans are better than shorts so your smart enough for that atleast.:dodge: Had my off at 120 or so and I didn't even get grass stains on my jeans.
Hope you get everything sorted soon mate.

EDIT: Oh and you may want to wait till you get back before getting some riding pants. Quasi has got some stuff coming in (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=16755&page=1&pp=15) you could check out.

AFAIK you don't have to tell them if you've dropped it if you aren't claiming.

As for the devaluation. Second hand FXR's are almost always dropped anyway.

If it worries you that much, keep it and use it as a bucket.

You wouldn't get much as a trade in anyway.

I would claim the insurance and get it fixed pretty. You are allowed on the open road with a L licence just have to do 70k/hr You were under that so I cant see them questioning it. As for the L plate. Dont mention it. I am sure they wont.

Ditto, F**K em' loosely insurance leaches - just get pissed off when my mates insure 60K HSV's for $600 a year, and I with no speeding tickets or anything get charged $1100 for a 19K bike.

Anyhow, get it checked out properly, I think you'll be surprised at how much the 'clothed' bikes cost to recloth.

Good to hear you're okay though.

Heya Pathos,
Really bad luck mate, glad you are ok though! Know what you mean about the jeans, I refused to get back on my new bike without proper pants, I too crashed into a barrier post doing about 55-60 k, but my bike was a write-off I was wearing jeans and got away VERY lightly with only bruising.

On the insurance note, I didn't have my L plate on AND the cops attended my crash but my insurance company paid out. What I did though was take bthe bike to a shop get a quote to see how much it's gonna cost you and then comtemplate letting your insurance company know. If you can afford it yourself or its not going to cost much more than your excess then I wouldn't let the insurance company know, cause then they may note it against you or you can lose your no claims bonus, and if when you get insurance for your next bike the cost goes WAY up!

If you think the damage is no more than your excess, don't tell them. Just get it fixed at your expense.

A crash by your own hand is easier to take then one that's 'an act of God'. You'd be well within your rights to want to throttle someone.

Hope the insurance all works out ok and you're not without a bike for too long.

Beemer
13th September 2005, 11:13
Protecta's excess is 25% of the sum insured, so if the repairs are less than that (don't forget to take into account any no claims bonus if you have one), I wouldn't bother claiming. That's why I changed to AA - didn't fancy paying the first $4500 if anything happens to the Beemer! $300 is a lot easier to wear as an excess.

I work for Protecta (in IT, so cant help with the claim or with new policies sorry), and my understanding of it after asking around here is that you dont need to inform the insurance company of the accident if you are not claiming. If you do claim, you may need to file a police report, which needs to be done within 24hrs of the accident (their requirements, not ours).

And Beemer is correct (kind of). Single vehicle accidents (which this is) will incur a 25% excess. Also bear in mind that it will affect your no claims bonus, so weigh up your options carefully.

I have just asked all this on the downlow, so dont quote me on it. You may also like to PM postie, he may be able to shed more light on it than I'm able.

Its a Suzkui thing...............

Bummer on the bin mate, cunt of a place to do it as well, really need to ask yourself if it's worth claiming insurance, i think different to some people but if my bike goes thats all i care about, if looks slightly not pretty due to some scrapped fairings, who gives its still doing the job as long as the motor suspension, etc is sweet, i'd hate to claim insuarnce get it all pretty again and have another mishap and fuck it etc, and then have your premiums go up because you have claimed previously, i've seen many people fuss over how their bike looks and they have the slightest off and spend thousands on them to get em mint again and then drop again, another thousand bucks there agin, that could've spent on tyres, gas etc, if it's not that bad i'd live with it, if it's written off and bent every which way then claim on it.

My 2 cents

Just another thing for everyone infact, if you are going to claim insurance for anything and something may of happened that would jeopadise you getting insurance, like i was doing 180kph when i crashed or i shouldnt of been riding this bike, or my mate was riding it and crashed it, but i'm claiming that i was me riding it to get insurance, you get my drift.

Dont post it or ask for advice on a public forum, namely this one, Insurance Investigators are rather smart and links to you can be made quite easily, and then no insurance for you. Keep it to PM's or someone you know thats well informed.

I'm home now (didn't crash again).

I grabbed some cordura trousers while I was down there, jeans just aren't enough. If I had been going 100 at the time the tarmac would have reached the bone.

Shes still running well, I got a new right mirror and front brake lever no problems. I doubt it will cost more than the excess to fix so bugger the insurance (no police report). I'll leave it how it is until sell it may drop it again and it suits silver duct tape :P.

When riding on a fxr long distance get the highest octane you can cause it really helps in the hills and makes it a little more comfortable. And only costs 2 bucks more.

god the weather was beautiful in palmy. The weather there seems to get better each year.

..need a job now, bikes downed all my savings.

Pleased you made it home in one peice and with some better gear too!
Spent 8 years in Palmy and the weather was not good for m/bikes. However when we were down there for the KR Manfield track day the weather was mint.
Catch you on a ride sometime perhaps :)

Coe by Digipoll. They'll hire anybody so long as you can speak passable english (somtimes not even that in a few cases...) Pay is allright if you get decent hours wich is rarely but it's better than nothing.

Mate, supposedly I work full time there and I only get about 18 hours a week. And you choose your own schedule. You write down what days and shifts you can work then they give you the ones they can based on wjat you wrote down. They love it if you work evenings and weekends BTW.

But I have to try other avenues first. (Those that could count as serious work experience).

could meet you somewhere and show you where they're at. Bring your CV along and hand it in, after that, it's easy.

Fair call...wouldn't mention doing 50 around a 25 either...leave the blame with the greasy shit... :sherlock:
