View Full Version : Beautiful bike all busted

So tonight, my beautiful bike slid out from under me in the wet and is now all busted up. The steering now feels really shaky to ride too, and after being pinned underneath, it hurts to walk.
I have full cover on the bike with NAC for 2k, and I'm on a learner's. What's the claims process like, and what will happen to my bike? Will I get money to fix or money to buy new? If so, how much?

My guess is as you are a learner and it is ( i assume)still a GN it will be cheaper long term to keep the insurance out of it.
Take it in and get a quote from a bike shop and have a look on trademe at the price of the bits you will need. if it is a slide off you should not have bent anything.

The speedo and indicators (indicators that were just replaced too) are completely smashed, and the speedo is also bent right over to one side. The steering is also really shaky, and although I got the bike home, it was really awkward to steer the bike. The positioning of the mirrors was weird - nothing looked wrong on the face of it, but no matter where I positioned the mirrors, I couldn't see traffic, although the handlebars looked ok.
Yes, it's a GN, but why would it be cheaper to leave insurance out of it? I'd then have to pay for all the labour and stuff on my own.

Because even though I guess you are a girl you are still a learner and they will up your premiums to make their money back and I guess you will have a high excess anyway.
the damage sounds cosmetic, the forks will likely be twisted in the yokes which would account for the funny steering.

So how much would that cost to fix without insurance?

That I can't answer because I can't see the bike plus it depends how much you can do yourself and or get friends to do etc. plus what you level of cosmetics you will accept.
like I said before get a quote to fix it and then have a look around on trademe etc.

You have two options now.
Option 1: You leave insurance out of it, don't claim and sort it out yourself. Whatever the cost is, you can get second hand parts or leave it scraped up etc. You should definitely get someone who knows what they're doing to inspect to make sure it isn't unsafe etc.
Option 2: You take it to your bike shop, they assess it and you lodge a claim with your insurers. They will want to know the details of what happened, who's fault etc. They will look at the assessment, possibly send an assessor to inspect and decide (often in conjunction with a call to you) whether it is cost effective to repair, or better to write it off and pay you out. You will need to pay the excess either way. If the call is repair, then they will arrange with the shop to order parts, have them fitted etc and you pay excess. If the call is write off, they will pay you out as per policy less your excess. It's up to you if you wish to buy the wreck back from them to fix yourself on your own time and dollar. Some wrecks can be picked up cheaply and some people do this, but if you're not mechanically minded then it's not an option for you.
Generally, if the cost of repair is above 50-75% (it varies between companies) then it's going to be a write off. There are also clauses in some policies if the bike is under a certain age (6 months or a year) then it's instantly a new bike. For write offs, ownership passes to the insurance company and it's up to them to deal with it.
Also, after an accident, be very careful with the bike. It's not a good idea to be riding it if you're not skilled enough to assess if the bike is safe to ride. You could miss something critical and then have another accident as a consequence.
As a general rule of thumb, if the repair cost is less than your excess, it makes no sense claiming, because it's on your record, your premiums go up etc.

You ring them up, they arrange for it to be assessed at a bike shop, either it gets fixed then given back to you or it gets written off and you get some money.
Your insurance will pay up to the lesser of $2k or market value. I doubt a 1987 GN250 is worth $2k but it might be close enough if they round it. How much is your excess?
Photos?

What does gdobssor mean?
Oh and I think it will be quite fixable from what you say, bearing in mind that some stuff with only scratches does not need to be replaced. Get it assessed as to whether it is worth having a claim on.
Also weigh up the pros and cons of moving to another bike if you get a payout. Not that there is anything wrong with a GN!

The claim and the process will depend on your insurance company. Good bike insurers are good to deal with - general insurance companies can be shit ...
You need a good estimate of the cost to fix it - if that cost is less that $650 then leave out the insurance company - if you claim you will lose any no claims bonus for a couple of years ...
This gives you an idea of what money the company will give you if they write off the bike .. $1,000 less your $650 excess - or $250.

If that's where they go, I'd go here instead .. for the same money

It's a bummer I know, when companies write of bikes "But it's my beautiful baby ..." I'd be pissed too ...

This is most excellent advice. Do what the man says.

Sad to hear your beautiful bike is all busted up. Such things are never a pretty sight ...
Before you get the bike stuff sorted .... get yourself checked out. But it is good you can tell us about it.
I have full cover on the bike with NAC for 2k, and I'm on a learner's. What's the claims process like, and what will happen to my bike? Will I get money to fix or money to buy new? If so, how much?
If your excess is $650 ... the first $650 costs with any repair claim is your problem. As a general rule ... any prospective repair costs over two thirds of the insurance cover you have ... the vehicle is written off.
Gremlin (as has already been stated) is worth listening to .. but Read your Policy (and google their web site) ... any questions on its wording and you contact your insurance rep. SOONER rather than later.

Group discounts I am not sure....... The $1.50 an hour charge I feel already is pretty reasonable.
