View Full Version : Motorbike jack vs stand

I'm thinking of getting someone a motorbike jack after seeing them use a log of wood when he was working on the forks (front tire was off - he had the bike stroped to the garage roof for balance). They do a lot of maintance to their bike themselves (its a old Honda standard looking bike). I don't know anything about bikes so I don't know if he needs one or if you can do most maintanace off the bikes stand, so would love to hear people's opinions - is the jack a bit ott? Secondly has anyone had any experience with the jacks that are around. I see supercheap have their Sca 1500lbs, repco have their powerbuilt 1500lbs and there are various ones on trademe and online. I know you pay for what you get and want to get something good without spending a ton of money.
Any advice/opinions would be brilliant!
Thanks
Steve

Most bikes only have a side stand, which makes working on them tricky. Some have centre stands, which allows the bike to be upright instead and working on them is easier.
It depends what sort of work you want to do. You probably want to look up paddock stands (different types for front and rear available).

Yeah i use a sca bike lift ($140) now. Used to use the car jack & block of wood bodge. The lift is great, makes things easy and safer compared with the bodge set up. Cheers

I have a rear swing-arm paddock stand - good for any job but work that requires the front end off the ground. For front end work I place a car jack under the strong part of the headers, raise the front and then place a pair of car axle stands under each side of the crash bungs and lower it onto them. Bloody secure. axle stands are often on sale at Repco and SCA.

Jack off in Oz? Was he put in the shitter or the money hole?
As for the stand debate. Center stands are great - cos they are always with you. I miss my FZ1.

I come up with a funny, well worded and topical put-down and you come back with that! What happened to you Axle, you used to be fun.
To the OP-You need to find out what type of bike they have. A rear stand using bobbins is probably the most stable and can be used in conjunction with axle stands if the front end of the bike needs to come off. A central lifting jack is useful if there is good lifting points on the bottom of the bike and things such as the exhaust do not interfere.

My one came from The Toolshed at $200 on sale. It lifts a little higher than the SCA one and, I am told, is more stable. Have not used the SCA one so I have no way of comparison.

He'll be fine.
If I'm taking wheels or something important off my bikes they usually get set up on axle stands 301519 like so
except usually with less mess.
I don't need a jack to get it on them and I am a small weak chap.
