I keep all my riding gear in a built in cupboard in the carshed. The jackets and pants are hung in the lower half. the helmets, gloves, tank bags and other bits and pieces are on two shelves above the jackets. The cupboard has a low output cupboard heater, left switched on all the time to combat the dampness etc.

I noticed the bag of dog buiscuts on the bench along side the cupboard had been chewed through by either mice or a rat. Figured the buggars may have been nesting in the warmth of the riding gear inside the cupboard as the shelves had a scattering of mice turds so I started pulling everything out off the shelves. Opening the two tank bags expecting to have mice leap out from the various balaclavas and gloves stashed within the bags. Nothing shot past me, so pulled out the helmets and helmet bags very carefully, still no sign of the rodents. Nothing among the rubber overboots, rainwear.

Finished up emptying the entire cupboard without finding a single meeces. On top of the cupboard are some boxes with my fly tying stuff. Feathers, furs etc, The boxes hadn't been open for a couple of years so I thought that might be where they could be nesting. Nothing there, infact the materials showed no sign of being eaten by mice or insects etc.

The mice must be elsewhere in the garage, but with the mouse crap in amongst the riding gear, I'll be giving everything a good shake out before wearing any of it in future.

Sounds like you need some of those plastic 'better' mousetraps with peanut butter on 'em.

a few weeks ago I was riding along heading to the Coromandel, felt something crawling down my leg; pulled over and took off the leather pants, removed the cockroach, checked my jacket - found two more

need to find a better place than the garage for my gear I think

Got one, catching mice is not on its CV. Lying in the sun all day is.

Some years ago a mates wife pulled her 'rarely' used riding boots on, one wouldn't fit. A dead mouse in the boot, Jeezus! did she perform,:laugh: A good pair of boots were thrown out.
I thought a tank bag full of soft neck soxs and balaclavas in a warm spot would have made a good nest.

That cat needs reprogramming

Our new fella - just a year old - is yet to discover the joys of mousing and ratting...

Had a family of Weta's move into my jacket one night the other week. That wasn't pleasant. They scratch like bastards and make some damn terrible noises when they're angry.

Needless to say, I built a closed off cupboard.

Or chocolate, but that really needs to be melted on to the trap.
