Looking for recommendation on a topo maps app for NZ. There are basically four options I found in the Apple AppStore:
Map Toaster Topo
iHike GPS NZ
Topo GPS NZ
MapApp NZ
Ability to look at topo maps offline is a must (when outside of cell coverage), all else is a bonus (trip computer, vertical profile, saved tracks, etc.). I have a Garmin eTrex Vista that gives me pretty good capability for all of that other stuff, so that's not critical. Also re offline capability, does the app allow for viewing all/any NZ topo maps while offline, or just last loaded?
Thnx for any insight.

easy to use, free updates, well surpported for Garmin products.
I haven't used the new app so don't know if available offline but downloadable to some GPS devices.

Thnx for the tip - looks like another viable option for a mobile device. Unfortunately won't do me any good for my Garmin b/c eTrex only accepts vector maps, and I'm looking for an offline bitmap Topo. I'll definitely look at it for the iPhone/iPad, though.

Buy a map book or ask for directions at a gas station. NZ isn't that big. The worst you can do is wind up next to one of the oceans.

Be helpful to know what your intended use is for. For bush/country navigation by foot or off road vehicle I use ViewRanger. Can import Linz maps for a fee but I just use the free OpenTopo maps. Does the whole bearing/grid reference thing too.
Only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a satellite picture overlay so I use another app for that. Think you can create your own custom overlay with a screenshot from google maps but meh.

I was at a seminar last night with LINZ: what I did not know is that they publish topo map data for free on the interwebs. Probably not what you are looking for but worth mentioning. They are having a website redesign now (which was the point of the seminar) but the information is still there:
Just chucking it out there if you find it useful:

I mentioned it's free right?

Having one of those goes without saying for me, but I do tend to be somewhat of a nerd when it comes to cartography...and 1:50,000 topographic maps are just so cool - you can't get same info out of a "regular" road atlas.

Primarily for country navigation on my KTM 990 Adventure, sometimes on foot also. OpenTopo looks great, I just now have to see if I can use it offline when not within the reach of cell coverage. I have no need for satellite imagery, so I'm okay with that.

Looking for recommendation on a topo maps app for NZ. There are basically four options I found in the Apple AppStore:
Map Toaster Topo
iHike GPS NZ
Topo GPS NZ
MapApp NZ
Used all of these and they are great.
Map Toaster was a great program on PC, will have a look at the iPhone version
MapApp is great for the iPhone, full 1:50,000 topo NZ coverage. Wish it would zoom in a wee bit more
MemoryMap- free 1:250,000 series. Works well. MapApp scrolls a little faster. Can buy 1:50,000 series as extra.
Hema Map- Good road map of NZ main highways (not topo map I know, same interface as MemoryMap
Sygic- turn by turn road map australia and NZ,
All above work offline.

Yeah I been using those LINZ maps for ages too, just print out when needed, rather large files if you don't have a good net connection though.
Uploaded one to ipad as test, views at useable sizes so imagine would be ok on decent sized phone.
Will have to look at some of those other links
