Who is going ???? :innocent:

I was thinking of doing something different this year than the DB1K, or I may get greedy and try to do both

Did both last year...Bannockburn by far the better of the two for me...more relaxed and time to look round and explore...I was luckynto have a couple of good riding mates and look forward to doing it again next time round....

there's some brilliant riding around there, would be great to have another look around.
Wonder if the routes involve area's not normally open??

In 2014 there was only one guided route involving a small bit of private access, the rest were public access self guided routes with route sheet instructions on A4 pages. For the self guided stuff you go with whom ever you want and when you want with the idea of socialising at the Bannockburn pub at the end of the day. They do suggest which route to ride on which day based on weather etc but in the end it's up to you where you go and our group of 3 started making it up as we went stretching rides out to include more.
Places like Macetown and the Serpinitine (both must go for me) are not in the route lists as they can not recover you there easily but people do ride to those places on their own without aide of routesheets to guide them during the week.
This was the list in 2014... (click for bigger)

And speaking of such cynna and thepom we should sit down around the computer and/or maps sometime and make a better plan some routes for the week now we understand the format. I'm thinking we might be able to do both Omarama Passes as a loop with Tompsons. Macetown will also be a good test for the Klim Gortex boot liners, keen to get back in there.

I intend on being there for bike week, and confirm that both sides of the Omarama saddle can be done with dry feet (goretex boots required, but dry feet require no mates with R80's who need a push).

Would be keen to group-ride of few of these tracks with whoever is keen on the day.

sounds like a plan. accomodation is all sorted so be better this year now we dont have to go back to alex each day.

the omarama loops is a must as well as macetown since i didnt do it last time

also those from out of town there is the rally at alexandra and also one at hororata on the way back after the bike week if you need anywhere to stay on the friday or saturday nights

the dusty butt in now only a week after bannockburn bike week so wonder how that will affect enties to both events

Whats the best camping for a tenter??

Transalper
13th October 2014, 20:44
I understood that camping across the road from the Bannockburn Pub was included in the entry fee (cheapest option) but you had to go down the road and pay for a shower at the domain or something.
Haven't read this properly but maybe some useful info?

hi guys
I went along to Bannockburn this year. I can confirm that the 'campsite' is a field a short walk away from the hotel & a couple of portaloos were available. Showers etc were a little further away at the Bannockburn camp site (mostly filled with RVs).
I hired a cabin in Cromwell & discovered that the majority of folk attending Bike Week also stayed in Cromwell preferring the full facilities of a holiday park or house.

Bannockburn Hotel provided a mini-bus to transport folk back to Cromwell in the evening, but let someone know you want to use it.
Food at the hotel was good too :first:

I'll be back in NZ soon & may pop along for the Saturday night entertainment if I'm in Otago :)

Have booked the week off this year as, having done the DB1K a few times, finding the pace a bit much. Would definitely be keen to do something simlar over a more relaxed timeframe.

I'll be along for part of it. At least one road ride and one or two adventure rides. It's handy living close enough to be able to look at the weather and decide which bike to bring. :ride:

Have just booked my Ferry crossings today, head south over the Ditch on the afternoon of Monday 26th & stay in Havelock the night.

Tuesday - my plan is Maungatapu track to Nelson, then Braeburn Track – Porika Track –Rainbow Rd & Stay @ Hanmer Springs for the night.

Any of you nelson boys ( or anyone else heading south ) want to skive off work for the day and join me, I would be happy of the company.

Wednesday, Hanmer Springs to Farlie Via lees Pass/ Okuku Rd.

We aren't the kind of camper that holds people up, but if we take a disliking to anyone on a BMW we have a special device under the drivers right foot that when pushed to the floor belches smoke and soot into their faces.

Yep, blue sky looks nice but a bit of cloud cover down there should make the comfort level a whole lot nicer, couple of short showers to keep the dust down be good too, just not while we are actually out in it. .... although with Klim Gortex gear on maybe not so bad.:niceone:

weather looks good for the W Coast, so really lookin forward to exploring on the way down,, its a stunning place when skies are clear!
Will be good to put a few faces to user-names at Bannockburn too.

Yep, them Safari's are common around here.
The rain, not so much. Had some overnight; stopped this morning and now it's sunny and 30 degrees again.
Went up to Algidus, around to the Harper end of Coleridge, and through to Lyndon today. Drizabone isn't just a coat.

Went over the old man range this afternoon. It was raining for the last half of the nevis and through to Lumsden. By the time we got to piano flats the rain had stopped. Did hear some thunder and see some rain in the distance going over the range but it never made it to where we were. Pretty dry up there but I did manage to find 1 mud bog to get filthy in.
