View Full Version : Moron in a 4WD on Rimutakas - yes, it's true!

The BMWOR had a ride over to Lake Ferry today, great day out but it could have ended in tragedy. As my husband and I rounded the corner before the summit at the top of the Rimutakas, a guy in a 4WD towing a trailer pulled out in front of us. It was a boat trailer with a sheet of plywood on the base, and on the top of that he had a pile of 4x2s - a full row tightly packed on the bottom, and about half a dozen more on the top, held in place loosely (and I mean that in the true sense of the word!) with a really flimsy tiedown. He wasn't driving slowly and immediately we noticed the top 4x2s jumping up and down and moving from side to side, so we backed off a bit, waiting for the chance to pass him. About a km from the summit on the Wairarapa side, one of the boards slipped sideways (no, unfortunately it didn't stick in the fence and cause the tosser's trailer to jacknife...) and then next thing, his tiedown snapped and the ratchet mechanism flew off and landed on the road in front of us. Thankfully it didn't bounce, so my husband flashed his lights and blasted on the horn to alert him. No response, not even when one of the boards flew off the trailer and also landed on the road in front of us. We slowed down and tried to kick it to the side of the road, but one of the bikes following us ran over it (thankfully they didn't come off). The driver then decided he would pull over - to the right hand side of the road! I was too busy yelling at him and telling him what a fucking moron he was to get his rego, but I wish he had as the load was not secured properly and he obviously didn't bother checking it when he stopped at the summit.
It's a shame the cop who was riding with us was at the front of the pack and missed this or the guy would definitely have been done! And on the way back another 4WD was wandering all over the road - coming up to the little bridge at the start of the hill on the Wairarapa side he had two wheels over the centre line, forcing an oncoming car to pull over to avoid hitting him. Surprise, surprise, when we got to the passing lane we found he was talking on his cellphone and smoking!

I think they should raise the tax component for those who CAUSE accidents rather than those who are the victim of them! Or just put a blanket tax on those who choose to drive a 4WD - sorry, Motu! :dodge:

And if it was a Holden ute towing the trailer all Holden ute owners would be tared with your brush?
Insecure loading, certainly an offence. If it was his $40,000 boat on the trailer it might be better secured?

No. They're just average everyday non-skilled, non-killer drivers. They can't possibly be doing anything wrong, as they're not speeding.

Don't care what make the 4WD is, the majority of them are driven by people who lack basic road skills and only drive them because they are 'safe'.
I bet he borrowed the trailer and the sheet of plywood - and the tiedown too! It was a really crappy one - one of the following riders managed to run over that too - thought they would have seen it as the strap was bright orange...
I had to pull back the other day when following a truck - the tail gate was swinging and he must have carried a load of fine sand earlier because it was flying everwhere each time the gate moved.
I am amazed he even got as far as the summit because the boards were sliding all over the place when he pulled out. He would have been better off to either tie them in a bundle and try and secure that, or try and load them in the back of his vehicle.

Once more - it's poor driving skills - NOT the vehicle.

Father-in-law came home with a white patch (boat paint) on his shoulder after a wanker in a 4WD towing a boat decided he needs BOTH lanes to navigate corners!
Sorry Motu, but when 90% of 4WD drivers act like fucking retards then yes I will be tarring them all with the same brush!
This is out of a sense of survival, the same way every gun is loaded and every snake is poisonous!
No offence, I still treat Volvo/Merc drivers the same as 4WD's and Ford's/Holdens are cops till proven otherwise!
My biggest fear; A Volvo 4X4 with a "baby on board" sticker and a Taxi sign on the door driven by an Asian lady on a cell phone!

Was riding in a mates 4X4 tthe other day. He kept crossing the centre line at every turn blind or not and didn't seem to notice anything wrong with that. I yelled at him and made him pull over. His respons was, "I need to keep the momentum up" My reply, "Wich would you choose, keeping your momentum or having to explain to someones family why you ran over there brother/siter/mother/father/friend/what not. If you're gonna keep this up I wont be hanging around with you much longer"
He doesn't cross the centre line anymore.

Yes - saw all you beemer types out and about today, looked like you had a good turnout!
We must have been right behind you as we just missed the tie down and the 2 x 4 and a little farther down saw mr 4wd running up the hill to pick his crap up. Would have tried to get it off the road myself but didn't fancy our chances of stopping without being mowed down...
Still, just another day on the hill really! Morons on 2, 3, 4 and more wheels...
(bloody busy today)
Fantastic day though! Really wonderfull to be out and about!

ummm....4x4 hilux isn't really a heavy vehicle....mines 1713kg tare...
Come on guys...its got nothing to do with the vehicle....its not the 4x4 that steers it self around a corner!!! its the driver!!!
its usually townies that go for a trip on the open road that have issuse's going around corners....and driving propally....on the open road.Maybe there are alot more townies driving 4x4's now.....but then not all drive dodgy...its only a minority!!!!
...I'm a farmer who needs a 4x4 for my job...I don't drive around corners on the wrong side of the road...I never go faster than 110kmph [read: can't]...but are u going to persicute me aswell...just because I have a 4x4...I also own and drive a high performance cage...so I must be a total loose unit...out to kill someone...huh???? that what you guys are trying to say!!!! grow up !!!

Reminds me of the time a guy was moving furniture, all stacked on a trailor, none of it tied down, a couch jumped off the trailor and landed on the road in front of me, Couch disintegrated on impact, and about $1200 worth of damage was sustained to my car, did he stop? NO, did i get his Rego? nope, damn short sightedness. Thank feck i was in my car, not on my bike... having said that, if i was on the bike, i would have overtaken him earlier...
Or we have the knob today on the coatsville highway, those who have seen/heard my bike will know its not quiet, so even if this 4wder was blind, he would have heard me, i had been sitting on his arse for about 4 minutes before i over took, i cut down inside him on a open right hander, and at the same time he decided to cross the centre line by about 3 feet, put the shits up me... :oi-grr:

There was a thing about 4WDs on TV a while back and the people who drove them stated that they felt safe in them because of the size. Which made me feel proportionately less safe.
I would particularly avoid any primary school in this town around drop-off or pickup time, loads of mums in 4WDs, none of whom can actually drive, all totally distracted by what's going on in the car. And that's before the cell phone rings...

And for the record, you made a cock-up in your comment accompanying the red bling - "Sorry you had your fair share of idjiots whilst out on the road today but you should label every driver of that vehicle the same." I wonder if you meant "shouldn't", because if you did mean "should", why not green rep? Whatever, you obviously didn't understand what I was trying to say anyway.

I agree... how many times have I read moans and groans because we bikers are all put in the same pot? I've a bike and a 4x4 and whilst I acknowledge that 4x4's are more dangerous simply because they are bigger, the driving standard of some people, whether in 4x4s or driving Minis' is just as dire!
Just to balance things up, I was riding over one of the hills at the back of my place 2 weekends ago with my partner on the back, and was almost run off the road by an idiot on a ducati red something, hammering round on the wrong side of the road. I thought we'd bloody had it!

I agree with Motu/Cowpoos et al - it is the driver not the vehicle. By their very design 4WDs are worse handling (I'm talking general road usage) and have bigger blind spots than cars. In order to drive them as competently as a normal car, you have to be more vigilant and I would say more skilled than your average driver. Sadly I believe many people who feel insecure about their driving, and are therefore useless drivers, will try and hide their insecurity by the biggest bit of metal they can afford. Which leads on the what Beemer is saying - I wouldn't quite say majority, but I'd certainly use "many".
My mumble mumble cager story from the takas this weekend was a woman driving a people mover thing. I came up behind the car behind her, slipped past that car within a corner or two and settled in right behind her, waiting for a spare few metres to pass. Meantime she shits herself with a bike coming out of no where and starts focusing on the rear view mirror, not the road. So she manages to continue driving past all the areas where she could have moved over had she been so worried by the closeness of a motorcycle. Coming out of a right hander, she runs wide and clips the edge of the road, might have been a culvert or something, that launches the back of the car into the air. Bear in mind, we're talking slow cage pace here, it's not like she'd upped the pace. I guess her ploy worked, cos I dropped WAY back and waited for a passing lane.

And for those of you who are thinking about buying a 4wd as a tow vehicle, I can thoroughly reccomend the Mitsi RVR SuperSportsgear, it's the 2.0L petrol turbo model, it's what we use, it can out-corner, accelerate and brake most cars, from the factory it runs big dualpot brakes, sway bars, heavier suspension, 15 * 6.5" wheels. It's high enough to have visibility out back even with two bikes in tow, and can happily pull up to 1550kg of braked trailer without keeping the engine in boost too.

I nearly rear-ended a 4x4 on sunday (Edit: or would that be.. the plonker nearly front-ended me while reversing!)... the dodegy driver must of accidentally pulled off the highway at the wrong road (Going to White Cliffs in Taranaki).. so this plonker was reversing back to the main road (didn't pull over to the verge or anything, and was only 5-8 metre's from the corner).. with me coming at him @ 70+ luckily nothing was in the other lane.... what a silly plonker! I also had to dodge the loose gravel... and not long after that (bout 800 metres) another plonker in a red station wagon reversed from his drive way looking to his left.. totally ignoring his right hand side.. and pulled out in front of me to take up both lanes.... He was abit started as I high-beamed and honked the horn at him (dont know if the beam did anything @ 1pm.. but I did it anyway!).. I was beginning to think that visiting the place I grew up wasn't such a good idea!
Other than that.. had a good ride.. getting about 80% back from waving at other motorcyclists... even joined up with a 3 group ride for awhile before urenui =)

I once sat down with a friend and some alcohol to work out the worst possible combination of driver, vehicle, situation etc. We came up with the following; An elderly asian woman, driving a Volvo taxi bus, in rush hour of a major city, in the rain, still wearing her bowling uniform (including hat) after several sherry's at the club. That should give anyone nightmares!

Try driving in Auckland. If you survive the first couple of hours you WILL see that the majority of 4WD steerers are cellphone yacking, genital adjusting, brain cell deficient, products of their Father using a blanket as a condom.

The majority of 4WD owners I see do drive poorly in MY opinion. I live in the country so I see a lot of them on the roads whenever I go out. Sure, I do see some 4WDs being driven responsibly - but of course they are in the minority.
As for motorcyclists being worse than 4WD owners, man, you've lost the plot! I have rarely had my life endangered by a motorcyclist but every time I go out I am put at risk by a 4WD owner and that is not bullshit. The ones you ride with may be ignorant riders who do dumb shit, but the ones I ride with don't fall into that category.
And for the record, less means less in quantity, fewer means smaller in number.

.
I stand by what I said regarding motorcyclists being the most ignorant group of road users and you only have to read a few posts on these forums to see the attitude common among some members that"I ride a motorcycle so I'm better than everyone else and can do what I want and no one else can drive for crap"
You think all the crash stories on here didn't put anyones lives at risk?
So every single time you go riding a driver in a 4WD puts you at risk? I hope you're taking there rego's and reporting them
And I don't ride with ignorant riders who do dumb shit(well not twice anyway)

Can't agree more. In Auckland I feel sorry for the minority of 4wd's like Motu who actually use them for purpose they were made.

I've ridden in Auckland a few times and it sucks, if you don't want to put up with it move South, we dont have those problems here.

Some of the funniest things I have seen have been 4WD drivers trying to use them for the purpose they were intended.
For example two separate incidences of 4WDs on their roofs after the wankers tried to drive them on the smooth, flat dirt verges of Old North rd in the riverhead forest

hehe, probably using highway tyres, and in 2WD.
"Ooh, look I'll just steer a bit over there and drive on some of that dirt stuff, my 4x4 can still do 100....."
ooh shit...
The SCU programme had that asian driver on some beach doing reportedly 100 or a bit more, swerved to avoid water and most likely dug his tyres in and flipped ?7? times...
I agree with the driver not the vehicle argument, but the 4x4's do have greater blindspots, which only highlights the drivers lack of skills even more. That, and the average person seems to become very territorial once inside their vehicle.
The sooner the average person takes the task of driving more seriously, the safer we will all be.

Or just put a blanket tax on those who choose to drive a 4WD
Get fucked
And if it was a Holden ute towing the trailer all Holden ute owners would be tared with your brush?
Thank you
Don't care what make the 4WD is, the majority of them are driven by people who lack basic road skills and only drive them because they are 'safe'.
Get fucked again and learn a thing or too will ya, 4x4's are the most "UN" safe cars on the rd
when 90% of 4WD drivers act like fucking retards then yes I will be tarring them all with the same brush!
You can get fucked too
See my comment above - "the majority" of these people drive poorly - not ALL of them.
Yet again..... you know what I'm thinking here, now the "majority" is a compleat bullshit comment....... Its my belief that the majority of licenced drivers/riders on NZ rd's are poor drivers..... I have driven over seas and the rd's work like clock work, but not here and FWIW 'yes' I drive a 4X4 I have a clean licence, licences 1,2,3,4,5,6,D,F and Aussie licences all the way up to B Triple..... Ohh but then that dosent matter cos I also drive a 4X4.... dumbass... its the person behind the wheel not the car/truck/bike
The most ignorant bunch of road users I see are motorcyclists, I see far less of them on the road but a far higher percentage of those I do see are doing dumb shit
Well maybe not the 'most' but yes they are up there as bad as cagers...... someone mentioned a page or two back that 4X4's cross the center line all the time....... well check out the attachment, yes that is a KBer.... and by me WELL over the center line.

Gezzz look around ya will ya........ the percentage of cars on the rd are 4x4's so its not hard to work out that more 4x4's means more idiot drivers in 4x4's

Hey.... he lost the plot a long time ago... but has a very good point, I often do dumb shit when out riding with the locals.... but that dosent make me a bad bastard does it.... ohhh no in your book I am a bad bastard cos I drive a 4X4.
I think you and the riders you ride with should give up riding and wrap up in cotton wool....... seen as you "don't fall into that category"
if you don't want to put up with it move South, we dont have those problems here.
SHUT up man..... now they will move down here and Chch will just be another Dorkland.......... BTW we do have those problems down here cos we do actually have 4x4's here.

a) true but killing our selves is not what this thread is about but the behaviour of 4X4 DRIVERS
b) I would have thought that the % of 4x4's on the rd would be much higher..... hang on I live on s/h1 Ill do a we testie thing over 10min's BRB

4X4...............67
Thats a lot of traffic in 10mins at the end of it all bout twice as many cars as 4x4's still thats a high 4x4 turnover per voloume..... I'm more worried about the lack of motor bikes out there
Anyway Lou... think thats more than 14% isent it?
