Molesworth activity permitsFind out what access and activites are managed with a permit system on Molesworth Station.
About activity permits.
Public access to Molesworth is managed to balance recreation, farming needs, fire risk and public safety.
Access is available to the public within certain zones during specified periods of the year.
The Molesworth map (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-visit/marlborough/south-marlborough/molesworth-station/plan-and-prepare/map-of-molesworth-station/) will assist your planning.
Outside these specified zones and time periods, public access is restricted and an activity permit is required.
See the list below to work out if you need an activity permit.
Activity permits require the consent of the Lessee and can be declined due to farming activities such as mustering, calving and animal pest control.
Activity permits may be declined due to safety issues such as extreme weather conditions and fire risk.
Alternative dates or locations may be offered to the applicant.
Apply online for an activity permit (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-visit/marlborough/south-marlborough/molesworth-station/activities/molesworth-activity-permits/activity-permit-application-form/)
During the open access period, always check that the road is open by phoning the DOC Wairau / Renwick Office +64 3 572 9100 at any time. It may be closed by extreme weather or fire danger.

In lieu of a map, have a look at these options:
1. 2km north of Castle Hill village, turn left up the access road to Mt Cheeseman (public to the skifield carpark).
2. 7km north of C H village, turn left up the access road to Broken River Ski Field. There's a side road on the right, 2km in from the main road, that'll lead you through bush back to the main road, one km further north.
3. One more km north, turn left onto the access road to Craigieburn Ski Field.
4. Further north again, pass Lake Pearson, and at the end of the next long straight (just before Cass) turn right onto Craigieburn Rd, and it's about 20km to the road end at the Avoca River. There are often closed gates where the road crosses the railway line, but it's all public access if you stay on the obvious road.
5. Just past Cass, on the right is the road to Mt White. It's about 25km to the Poulter River. Just before the P River bridge, there's a 4WD track off to the left through a gate, and depending on the weather and recent scouring of the few streams you cross along the way, you can ride the approx 12km to the Arthurs Pass National Park boundary at Mt Brown Creek.
Let me know how you get on.
