Ant Infestation

Heres one for the what the f%$# awards,

out riding with a mate on Sunday, he suddenly pulls in to servo, jumps off and starts pouring water over his bike.

of course, had to stop and ask why......... looks like he picked up an ants nest.

Little buggers were all over, running a track from his dashboard to his foot peg.


washed them off( or so he thought) got to Martinborough, up to 180km at times and when he stops, theyre still there.

Had people making bets as to what he was doing, as he emptied an entire tin of Fly spray into his bike and fairing.

Has anybody else had this happen?

Had the bike been stored for a while? It happened to a mate's GPX coz he just stuck it in the shed out the back for like 6 months

I had a new car years ago, which was an ex-showroom car. Some how, it had picked up little black flies in the dashboard and vent system. Couldn't understand it until it was just constant. Had to fumigate the car.. yummmmmm..

Watch where the ants are going back to. Can't be that hard. Then when you see where they go, target that area. They're very systematic. They should head back each time to the same spot following the same route. Just trace them, and evict them (you may need to serve a notice under one of the tenant agreement acts tho..)

Try adding some malt vinegar to the wash mix. works a treat on cars, would imagine that it will also work on bikes (around a half a bottle per bucket).

Couple of weeks back I put my helmet down on the grass at Caltex Rimutaka. When we were ready to go I got kitted up again.
5 minutes down the road and I can feel something in my ear, I start moving my helmet around trying to dislodge it. Mrs S is telling me over the intercom that it'll just be a peice of hair so we continue onto the summit. By that stage I can't bear it...pull over...tear the helmet off and inspect it for bugs...nothing.
So we set off again...5 minutes later...that feeling is back.

So I'm convinced that it's a peice of hair...until we stop in at the Fish, this time I find a big fucking ant!!! Couldn't stop itching for the rest of the trip.

In the house the fastest result is to...
1 Take one shallow saucer or jar lid place it on their trail.
2 Fill to heaped with white sugar.
3 Fill to the brim with malt vinegar.
4 add as much sugar as neccessary so there is no puddle of vinegar.

If it over flows a little leave it where you spilt it cleaning chemicals will stop this from being effective.
If it over flows a lot clean up but move to another part of the trail.

This has worked for me many times in many houses. Often at the insistance of the pillion of the time I have tried (and failed) to rid the house using commercial ant killers. No luck there but you knew that, otherwise this post would not exist.

I came accross the idea when I went to the library looking for a non poisonous, odourless and pet safe alternative. Important when you have kids or pets in the house.

The book was called 1001 uses for vinegar.
According to the book what happens is the ants take the sugar to the nest.
The ants can't smell the vinegar on the sugar because they are on the trail.
The ants eat the sugar leaving the vinegar in the nest.
The ants cannot find their way out of the nest and if they do they cannot find their way back.
The ants die of starvation.
The ants eat each other. This means that there is no smell, particularly important if you have a pregnant woman in the house or one of those pillions that claim to be able to smell the little blighters.

Watered down vinegar is also good for getting rid of that mouldy smell in gloves or helmets. Who knows it may even keep the ants out.
Warning! Water it down on fabrics or it bleaches them when exposed to sunlight.
Leather on the other hand only works undiluted.

will try the vinegar ideas....weve got masses of ants at the flat...even in the dishwasher at times. they only seem to appear at night, so id make a point of running their trail over every night. now theyve moved it over so far its in the grass, so cant be run over. :violin:

and yeh, squished ants do smell. can smell it as soon as you get under the carport.
