View Full Version : More Maori greed at Woodhill bike park

Went to Woodhill (Sandpit) today and was informed that an additional $2 has to be paid to the maoris to allow your vehicle on its land.... Was told if sandpit refused to collect they would cancel lease.

More greed, Sandpit already pays plenty, sign of the times!

I got told on Sunday its for Road Maintenance.
There was a sign up on the outside of office wall from the local Whanau but wanted to ride so didn't read it. Was to rooted to stop on the way out.
They where doing a form fill out with vehicle weights and numbers etc

Knowing Tony he wouldn't have charged it unless he had to.
With Summer coming on, females free (I've taught my missus to ride) and every 6th ride free at Thunder X it may impact on his business.

Charging $5.00 entry for all Waitamata Club rides in Woodhill!
Put the price up at the horse park to and apparently numbers have dropped as a result.

I don't see any problems for the sand pit they are just charging you the extra $2, just can't stop at the shop for a can of coke.
If it bothers you that much don't ride their, save the money you spend on chains, sprockets and gas to get their.
Its fuck wits like you who fuel tension, bet you don't stop riding when petrol goes up or they raised acc levies.

First off you have to be thank full you can actually ride up there, the maori or other forestry partners can cut off access at any time they want, I have been riding there for 30 yrs and it is a sign off the times, but you just have to put up with it or lose one of the best riding areas in nz.

Are you sure they can cut access off at any time or are they contractually required to provide access to public for recreational pursuits.

If he is then how are they charging a fee to use the road, the road is not there to get to the sand pit its for the owners to get to there. If they can cancel the lease then that implies the owners can charge a fee to use the road.

There are public acces restrictions in place in the Kaingaroa and other forests for recreational anglers and other public activities. but do not know if they could apply the same restrictions to woodhill forrest.

So just to clear it up - are you paying more than $20 to ride your bike on someone elses land?

If not - shut the fuck up or buy your own damn land.

I'm getting sick of city slickers who complain about having a trail bike and not having the land to ride it on. Buy a vespa.

Forest management (CHH, Hancock or whoever has the cutting rights at the moment) charge the Maori for road upkeep.
They pass it on to us.

If not they will just close the gates and stop all access into Woodhill.

It's $30 bucks plus the $2 fee, Same cost at Thunder but every 6th ride free and Girls ride free (as long as they havent changed it from a year ago??)

So how does that work for people with yearly membership?

I guess you'll have to have the $2 every time you go out.

Not been many other places then? :innocent:

In winter its about the only place to go in Auckland and Tony keeps the place in very good order, its a great park.
If girls rode free we'd go more often but we head to thunder as its same distance from here to both and the $30 we save covers most of the gas in the car.

Most of the ones we do are legal. Only 2 places we ride we are not supposed to, but the forest owners seem to be reasonable about those. :2thumbsup

$2 I wouldn't complain Im living in Connecticut USA there are buger all places to ride , bout the only places ive found are proper tracks not free riding all over a forest with miles and miles of track for around the same cost as woodhill thats $30 usd tho. All that being said I although ive bought a few bikes while being here for the last 1 1/2 years but ive only fixed them up and sold them as my insurance won't cover the cost of anything I break or damage neighbor did his collar bone cost with out insurance $40,000.00 +. So a couple of extra bucks to ride back home is nothing considering you also have acc to cover you as well id call it bloody cheap. Stop yah moaning it's the one thing that is cheap in NZ.

If $2 is that much bother and you have to dig in deeper to find it then yes.........don't show up.
The owners don't care if its stay open or shuts, then they'll be blamed for no place to ride. Some can ride other places not everyone is fortunate enough to have that option.
While farm rides are fun....... when your riding with everyone from kids up with a lot of people I know which one I would take.

Ok that is fairly high. So you must really like it or are a glutton of punishment. $2 on top of $33 really isn't worth complaining about either. GST is higher.

Of course I could have misread this - and you're penny pinching <insert well-off="" racial="" slur="" here="">. In which case - please excuse me, I had no idea how loaded you are likewise how much you moan about someone else taking your tuppence.

Or buy a block somewhere else. I mean $35/week is the interest payment on a small block somewhere 90 minutes out of town.</insert>

Not to mention the CT park pass which is a pain the arse to acquire......and is localized to a specific area, so if you drive to the park in the nearby town......you're screwed......

Never mind the crazy concept they call insurance here. I pay $20K+ year in insurances. It's insane.

But these guys have to pay for ACC on their bikes.......oh wait.....hang on they don't.......

What the Maori don't know (or they do and this is why they are charging and extra $2) is that when shit goes down on their land......ACC comes back to haunt. So don't assume this is all greed driven. Until you try and host a bunch of motorbike riders riding on your land (on a regular basis) - you don't know shit. Other bike parks have shut down for less.

Sandpit is only really any good in the winter when Thunder X and Moto X Central are closed.
I also just taught my missus to ride too and it works out a lot cheaper even though its further away.

I reckon the riding at the sandpit is pretty average and the sand probably doesn't do much for your bike either anyway.
That $2 is the straw that broke the camel's back IMO, from now on they will only get my business when the others are closed.
Lot of money to be made for someone who is willing to stay open in winter and build some gnarly tracks (big hillclimbs etc.).
But for now I reckon James Fowlie from Thunder X is a top man and deserves to be supported more.
Seen him go out of his way to fix a kids bike and help another guy out with a fix on his busted radiator.
I'm still waiting for a reply to my email/s I sent to the owner/s of the sandpit 3 months ago, rubbish service and woman pay full price:bye:

have you seen what it costs to keep the place available? What would you charge for someone to ride around in your backyard?

i bet they charge the extra $2 because it weeds out whinging cunts so they don't have to listen to them

Hmmm cause riding there and being caught having bike confiscated paying fines for riding bike on beach with no rego / wof or being banned from riding woodhill and other events out there if caught is way cheaper than $2 for fuck sack its $2 whoopie shit.

He would have negotiated this fairly hard knowing him. Prob why a Waitamata ride is $5 bucks for the same fee. I'm just going to front up and pay!
Imagine if the place closed down FFS we'd have no winter riding. It is a well cared for facility, tracks groomed and new tracks every now and then.
We shouldn't shit on the sandpit because of things beyond its control.

The only thing stopping me going there summer as well is the free riding for girls at Thunder (and the 6th ride free so its actually $25 per ride).
e.g. Sunday before last I took the missus out to Sandpit did fuck all riding as I was teaching her, and it cost the full $60 bucks.
The $30 dollar saving damn near gets me home and back from ThunderX.

None the less everyone knows without the Awesome facility we call The Sandpit we are all fucked.

Tony has done an awesome job with the sand put, and its my favourite place to go riding in the winter or after decent rain, i have taken some overseas riders up there and they all love it, Jake Nicols a british GP rider wished he could have a place like that to ride at home, and i think what he charges is more than fair for the amount of effort he puts into tracks and maitainence,

James at thundercross is another guy that has put a heap of time and money into having a place to ride, and has been though some hard times with it as well, stuff that no one should have to go though,

we as dirt bikers are lucky to have both guys to give us somewhere to ride,

Looks like there will be increases for mountain biking at Woodhill as well. Apparently the fees are going towards maintenance of the common areas.

Info here: http://www.bikeparks.co.nz/press-release-the-future-is-bright-for-the-woodhill-mtb-park

The fee was a massive $7. I think this is criminal as well... Actually, it's more like the hours drive out there that gets me. $7 a ride (season passes available) ain't that bad when you can go lose yourself in a forest for as many hours as you like with a ton of trails...

The Jesters pie van is criminal. I just busted my gut mtb'ing and I can't resist that most delicious pie :weep:

There aren't many groups who run in there. I only know of Waitemata MCC, and Endless Events(Tony's company). So there were never a huge number of people running events there anyway.

Its not that no one is using it anymore, just that they aren't using it over the summer because the sand gets a bit shitty without any rain.
