Looking at getting a scooter, I don't have a motorcycle license at this stage so looking at 50cc models. From what I can tell, in Dunedin I have the choice between Suzuki and Yamaha, there may also be a Honda dealer somewhere.

Suzuki have the UZ50Y for $2600 and the Yamaha have the beewee something for nearly a grand more. My problem is I can't seem to find any reviews or other information on these scooters?

At this stage I'm pretty sold on the Suzuki as I can't see the Yamaha being a grand better then it.

Also a couple questions in general about scooters, is it worth getting a motorcycle license and a 125cc scooter, and is there any reason to get a large scooter over a small motorcycle?

Any of the Taiwanese or Japanese makes are reliable. Scan the other threads in this section, this subject has been covered a zillion times.

Personally, I would suggest looking at getting your bike licence and buying a small bike or a 125 or bigger scooter. A GN125 can be had for the same money as a 50cc scooter and offer a lot more.

A 50cc scooter is nigh on useless for most road situations.

I disagree... I live in Auckland and use my 50cc scooter all the time. Can put a few groceries under the seat. Stores the helmet and gloves under the seat. Great for short trips... of course I have another vehicle in case I need to do anytjing more than a short trip... but 50s are useful little things... and cost nothing to run.

I agree they are oddly over priced. Even second hand you can almost get a car for the samenprice...weird.

For new, I guess part of it is that there unlikely to make much out of you in accessories with a moped, so they put a higher margin on the bike, and part of it is the convenience of a walk in drive out bike with all on road costs included.
