View Full Version : Getting a 50cc from Albany to CBD?

The End

So I am required to transport a 50cc scooter from Albany to the Auckland CBD, but am stuck on which route to take.

I know I cannot take it across the Harbour Bridge, but my question is whether or not I can go across the Upper Harbour Motorway for what would be 2.5km or so? Otherwise I'd have to go out through Coatesville/Riverhead?

Anyone have pointers on which route to take?

Post it

Seriously, H16 would be your best bet. I did this route a fortnight ago on my scooter. Just sit back and enjoy the views. It wont take as long as you might think.

You've answered your own question. It's a motorway. Same rules apply.

Put it on the back of a ute or in a van. If you don't have one, drag it behind a car.

I used to just go over the greenhithe bridge back when I was a young fella. Are you not allowed over that way now? Been over the harbour bridge a couple of times on my cb50 and an fa 50, but would not advise it these days, too many pommy coppers around.

That forms part of the new Upper Harbour Highway, a 4-lane motorway that opened a couple of years ago. Knob.

I would go over the harbor bridge but late at night (like 1AM late) and get on at Onewa Rd and get off on Shelly beach rd.

*Ask a mate that has a car with a towbar to lend you it, buy them a box of beers,
*Go to supercheap auto and get some ratcheting straps, or even Sunnys in browns bay has cheap straps
*Hire a trailer from the petrol station for around $50
*Put scooter on trailer, strap it down and you're off!

We fitted a scooter bit larger than a jog into a honda CRV once too.

Take it down state 1 in rush hour, traffic is mostly stationary anyhoo

Easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission man.

I'd just show up and get it on real quick, and then if they say something before leaving make a real hard time out of getting it off to hold them up, in the hopes they say fuck it and cross anywho as to not screw up the timetable. Take your plate off.

Could even throw some advanti stickers on it. I'm sure they allow push bikes.

Or put it in a box and have a mate lift it on with you, then just wheel it off the otherside.

That all said and done it's not exactly a world record breaking long distance extreme ride to get in the saddle and ride it home...

This does make some sense actually. Still could attract attention from the 5-0 however.

Id just ride it around mate, make an avo of it. It wont take that long, I hope. Shes supposed to be a sunny Saturday anyway.

Mate,
When I had yamaha vino50cc 2 years ago, I used to commute on in from Glenfield to CBD through harbour bridge everyday. Sounds crazy?

I called the transport agency & the popos themselves and asked if going under the speed limit was illigal & an issue,,, they both said NO. (although popo said they will pull you over if you slow the traffic down to a point where it will be dangerous to other road users)

As long as you ride between 8 - 9am (City bound). You will be "protected" by mad traffic and you will be the fastest thing on the harbour bridge. I did this 2 years ago and I'm pretty sure the auckland congestion hasn't improved since then. It works and I'm a living soul to prove it. Just be careful of the wind ;)

Take the ONEWA RD on ramp and take off at FANSHAWE ST.

Going back home was the same story. So long as you are in the traffic, you will be fine. But you never plan to head back to Northshore anyway..

Hope this helps.

Plenty of bacon covering the new Westgate-Albany motorway.

Plan A: As suggested, use SH1 during rush hour and you'll be much faster than any cars!
Plan B: Ride in convoy with another bike.
Plan C: Involves Plan B, + If popo show an interest, get other bike to lure the bacon away from you!:blip:

Yes made it home alive. A 2 stroke 50cc is very humbling when you're used to 919cc of awesomeness. :scooter::scooter:

Get a 125cc sticker. At rush hour, it's slow.

Honestly, I would just wait until peak hour traffic when the traffic is going slowly anyway and go over the harbour bridge then.

The traffic flow changed considerably once the changes to the Vic Park flyover occurred. I commute daily from Onewa to Cook st and it is rare for it to drop below 80km/h now. It's great.
