Have you disabled the firewall on the XP machine? Have you set up IP addresses for each machine? Can you ping either of them?

And ya shouldn't connect to the internet without a patched machine!

You need ZoneAlarm Pro, stops any of that shittttt.

As for the networking, all versions of windows hate each other. Even the same ones. Full stop.

In ya network and dialup connections.. goto the Network device.. there'll be a properties tab.. its on that.

To set a IP address.. click onto Internet Procotol (TCP/IP) click properties..

click on Use the following IP address.. set ya IP address to something like 192.168.80.1 subnet mask to 255.255.255.254

then ya other machine.. set to IP 192.168.80.2 (same subnet mask) use a cross-over patch cable.. or if ya got a switch connect both to that... and try to ping the other machine

SPORK

To ping, go Run, then type in "ping ***.***.**.*" where the ***s are their IP address

Should be on 'Shareaza', or kazzalite.

there are several known problems with xp and 2000, try looking on windows update for the patches for these and that should also help. Failing that you could just connect the HD directly and do a file transfer as the computer thinks it is only talking to itself.

Kidnap someone who knows what they're doing, should only take a few minutes.

And once you've got them they should only take a few minutes to fix it.

The versions of windows you've got are fine, you just need an IP address set up at each end and you should be going at it with your right hand in no time.

Just wait for the person you kidnapped to leave first...

Or get them painting the roof and remove the ladder...

HTH

Nah mate you can't do that unless you have an adaptor, the laptop has a smaller plug on it than your desktop can handle.

Go to one of your computers and see if you can go to the start menu->Run and type \\theothercomputer then push enter. If that works you are in otherwise go to setting up the tcp/ip stuff as the others have described.

LOOK HERE TO FIND OUT HOW TO TURN IT OFF: WINDOWS MESSENGER SERVICE (http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/)

HAPPY SPANKING.

XP? Start>Control Panel>Security Centre.

Change your IP (static) address (only for home/local networking, not for the tinternet): http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1427&page=7

/me would not be using that specific subnet mask....pretty lonely network you're gonna have there.

Winja,
I think Win-doze needs the Microsoft Client for Windows to recognise another Windows file system, if you are wanting to see it thru Win-doze Exploder. This is installed thru Network Connections, as another client type. I'm sure some Micro$oft desk jockey around here could tell ya fo sho tho.

If you manage to IP address both machines to the same network, confirm physical connectivity thru the cable (the LEDs are good clues), there might be an FTP server applet in XP? Dunno. Another one for the M$ nerds.
Otherwise get something like 3CDaemon (or google any other free FTP server of your choice), set up the source machine as the server and surf to it from the destination to pick up your files.

Shit me, when IS the Ashes kilikiti resuming.....

W2K definately has an ftp server. And all Windoze I think (after W95 anyway) have an ftp client. So long as the two machines have physical connection on the same network and with IP addys in the same subnet (and yeah, a sensible mask - try 255.255.255.0) , it should be possible to connect from the DOS command line (might need to manually add a route).None of this is much help to Mr WINJA.

Your cable will need to be a cross-over if they're connected directly to each other unless you've got auto detecting network sockets like switches have. But since you've had it working before, I assume that part is okay.

Next: As long as both PC's have IP addresses (type ipconfig in console) and they can ping each other ie ping ***.***.***.***, then you've got a connection.

Next: Install a FTP server on one PC and the FTP client on another (IE or explorer can do FTP so don't have to).

Happy file transfer.

Don't forget to switch off the FTP server or uninstall it when done.
Personally use FileZilla FTP.

Stuff the crossover cables, I tried networking my mates laptop and mine to play some games, static ips firewalls off the whole hog, and his could talk to mine (ping) and he had full access (not just shared docs) but blow me down, all I had was shared docs.

reverted to our modem router and straight through cables and there were no issues.

Unless you want to go through a "Network Setup Wizard" blah blah which requires bloody floppys :oi-grr:

If you have broadband and 2 or more ports on the router, then just use that. Muuuuuch easier.

Either that or simply use a high capacity Ipod :woohoo:

Easiest way - by far, is a biggish memory stick. plug into USB port on laptop. Copy files to it. Remove, plug into desktop USB port. Copy files from it. repeat if necessary.

No mucking around at all.

Mr WINJA, suggest you get a USB memory stick from Dick Smith and forget about all the network/cable shit

It's probably just the WinXP firewall default settings. Disable it when it's off the net. As for picking up viruses as soon as you connect to the net when using a clean Win2k install someone hit the nail on the head - you need the updates first. Confused? Get the Win2k rollup here before starting the reinstall: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/evaluation/news/bulletins/rollup.asp. Fuck you're a dumb cunt sometimes, Jeff. Oh, ok - most times.

Heh yea my brother is getting a 1gig SD memory card for his camera so we may use that to get some of the stuff of my laptop.

Still want to netwrok them though so we can play games like Starcraft and such.

Use a router and straight throughs. When you have played with crossovers for 3+ hours and a normal lan setup takes 2 min you will understand. It will also be more scalable.

We played RA2 mostly, and struggled to get BF1942 to run how we wanted, but when it worked, it was also good...

And I would say that although I am not brilliant, I do know more than the average monkey... :woohoo:

dude .. there is a way easier method of getting your porn from one computer to the other..

1) take both your computers into the laundry room and fill the dump-sink up
2) dunk the computer with the source data on it into the sink and leave for 10 minutes
3) remove from the sink and hold the wet computer over your laptop so it drains onto it. since we all know that porn is water soluable..the data has been washed from the hard drive and now floats in solution in the water

in order to insure complete data trasfer, empty the water in the sink useing a bucket or can and finish dumping that onto your laptop

your data is now transferred..

enjoy..

Not if they're USB2 :)

Kinda like serial cables?
USB-Universal Serial Bus.
Exactly like 'em.

It'll work, it may not be with blazing speed but if you can just go buy the cable, plug it in and start transferring files then there is no reason to WINJA about it.

Or something...

Why did no one just suggest the Networking Wizard that WinXP has?
Use that, following the points and should have you up and running in ten minutes.
Then just use My Shared Docs for transferring.

Took me about half a minute to sort out the 2 xp computers, however it took a tad longer for them to work with the other half's 98se and vice versa.
