Another engine failure left just 9 days to build a bike ready for Bannockburn 2015. With lots of late nights swinging spanners fitting a freshly rebuilt engine into a brand-new chassis, swapping adventure gear off the existing bike plus a few additional modifications, a new machine has come to life!

good read Josh, 690 should fit you like a hand in a glove - recommend the Rally Raid tank bolt upgrade kit though; the stock tank bolts snap like pretzels with any weight on the rear end....unless KTM has finally got round to making them out of stainless steel instead of scrap metal from recycled baked bean tins?

Hi ya Night Falcon, you're on the money with your tips, it seems a few things need addressing off the factory floor. I am sketching out the new build and appreciating the high number of options available. One decision I am yet to make is choosing between the Rally Raid Adventure Kit EVO1
http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk/image/cache/data/RALLY%20BIKE%201-500x500.JPG
or the DOTTORI Nuovo Africa Kit
http://www.albertodottori.net/images/ktm%20690%20red%20bull%201.jpg
They are both very nice looking kits

Hi ya Chris, yes looking forward to the new toy, mostly the increase in HP .
The route updates to the website are still a little slow as huge portions of time is being spent with the programmer on the new route uploading feature, once the new feature is complete the routes will go up in rapid time. I have well over 150 routes and features logged and ready to upload.
Cheers

FWIW I looked long and hard at the Dottori kit but decided against them - the mounting system was pretty flimsy and there were a lot of mixed reviews about the quality, Rally Raid gear by comparison appears to be bit more polished & popular - neither is cheap! You will sus it though -
The guys I bought my fairing off in Aussie also do a full kit for the 690 https://www.facebook.com/HARDkitsRR
these blokes make some as well http://www.perfect-fairings.com/en/home
Build thread will be much anticipated

Shame about the DRZ, and interesting.
That second kit for the 690 looks good for standing up riding Dakar style, but would be a pain on sitting down road sections as I don't think you (or anyone of average or below height) will be able to see over the top.

After some more research you are quite right, they look far less substantial than the Rally Raid mounting brackets. Cheers for the links :niceone:

It is a tad on the high side considering Alberto is a tall fella
http://www.albertodottori.net/images/ktm%20690%20red%20bull%20015.jpg
Its surprising though, my current DRZ400 screen is quite high but doesn't impede the vision of where you naturally focus when riding
http://www.remotemoto.com/photos/174/adventure-bike-screen-2-29586.jpg
With regard to the mounting brackets however, I think I'll go Rally Raid which will avoid any issue if it did end up being too high
ahh jeez wonder how long should keep the drz then :| was planning on putting some luggage on it
I certainly didn't want to scaremonger anyone riding a DRZ400, just share the experience as factually as possible. In all honesty I carry a truck load of gear (Riding, camping, fishing, work gear and an almighty tool kit and spares) much more than most, those carrying normal weights don't seem to be experiencing the same issue.

Interestingly enough I have stumbled onto a clever Australian (hard to believe huh ) who has experience with some fairly substantial mods that could potential cure the issue. I'll be following up with him on my return to base (still down south on the bike with another week of riding left :headbang:) and see whether I'll have a crack at building up one more engine and see if the issue can be cured.
As for normal programming...

Hi ya Kenny, as an update to the DRZ400 situation, after winding up the recent three week ride (including Bannockburn I rode with you) the bike performed exceptionally well as it always does. Certainly there were times it was lacking power when riding with more high-performance bikes on open stretches however overall I had a blast riding it. The reality is, I wouldn't be considering changing bikes if the big end issue wasn't present.
Looking at all the time and money spent on setting that bike up, spending another $3000 to rebuild another engine in aim to detect/cure the issue is fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of things. So that's the plan. I'll be rebuilding a new engine with a couple of modifications and engine monitoring processes to find what's going on, this will all be detailed in a comprehensive article on RemoteMoto of which I'll post the link soon…

Shame to hear you are having engine problems with your Suzukis.
I had not heard any bad stories about DRZ400s previously.
My DRZ400SM is coming up 10 years old now, having covered 68,000 trouble free Kilometres.
Regular oil and filter changes only.
That you mention your bike vibrated could be an indication of something faulty from the start.
All DRZs I have ridden are silky smooth? I use the standard seat and have done some Big Km days.
Sorry I am unable to offer you a solution to this mystifying problem.
Hope your luck improves, because your credentials, website and choice of steed are impeccable...

Yehaaaa, after months and months of intense development, working seemingly endless days, late nights and weekends on a range of new features; the RemoteMoto Exploration Route feature is here! There are many well-known routes across the globe (the TAT across America for example) offering a great way to explore other countries however New Zealand does not have an official exploration route encompassing ALL of the gems that New Zealand offers. The RemoteMoto Route Packages are an exciting new feature to RemoteMoto that offers a solution to this. Not only will this format be used to create the most epic New Zealand exploration route, there is also the option of creating exploration routes for single day rides, multi-day rides and multi-week rides.
A key thing to keep in mind is that these Exploration Route Packages are NOT plastic or commercial, they are based on genuine adventure riders taking raw and real information from the cream of the crop routes to create exploration route packages that ensure those who ride them have the best riding experience possible and don’t miss any secret tracks or hidden gems along the way.
The first Exploration Route Package is the Smoking Dragon created by yours truly, this is just one of MANY packages that I have lined up to load to RemoteMoto as I build towards my spin on the most epic grand finale South Island Exploration Route!! Stay tuned for more to come…

The BIG announcement for North Islanders!!!
Some of you may not know I was born and raised in the North Island, Waikune, National Park to be precise. I’ve always had a soft spot for the North Island and in some ways it has been strange that RemoteMoto has started in the South Island rather than the North Island. The plan has always been to cover the North Island in the same detailed way the South Island is covered. Well, after many, many development delays and release date extensions I am happy to say that RemoteMoto is officially ready to launch in the North Island!!
The great news is, all the website development is complete and ready to support North Island route uploads by both me and by riders who want to contribute. :woohoo: I’m looking forward to logging routes myself on my upcoming North Island trip where I plan to revisit my old hometown in Waikune (what’s left of it), see if an old bridge my Grandfather built yeeeears ago still exists, catch up with old friends, family and most importantly catch up with some of the North Island riders for a ride, coffee, beer, chinwag and the like.
From next week on I’ll be touching base with the North Island riders that have already expressed interest in playing part in contributing to RemoteMoto in the North Island and I can’t tell you how excited I am to catch up and get things rolling!!

Hi guys, absolutely, the goal for this trip is to take my time and make it quite a social trip. I'm looking forward to catching up with as many North Island riders as possible along the way. It'll be great to finally put a face to a screen name ;)

The cost to produce the adventure screens I ride with (that suit the DR650, DRZ400, DRZ250) is very high based on the fact they are made up of quite a few components and they are entirely hand produced. With a new design approach, it may be possible to produce them at a realistic price range. I’ll update on the progress as info comes to hand…

Hi ya Scubbo. To be fair, even though I only weigh 78kg, there is decent amount of weight being carried. Exact weight is unknown but the photo below shows the bike loaded up when on a typical riding/fly fishing trip and there is a ton of food, water, camping, cooking, fishing gear... plus 28 litres of fuel.
http://www.remotemoto.com/photos/1343/drz400-engine-big-end-longevity-79379.jpg
At this stage it hasn't been determined how much of a factor weight is playing. One interesting way to look at this, an S or SM model (which have pillion pegs) would likely be carrying similar or more weight than I do when carrying a pillion.

is the big-end actually disintegrating, seizing or just getting a bit rumbly?
Not being nasty mate,, but is the engine likely to go for years without getting any worse?
Had rattly old Honda engines that have gone for years of VMX and trail riding without failing completely.

Very interesting read. I run the BellRay thumper in my DR650, I think it is good oil and my DR sure sees some hard riding with plenty of weight on board.
I don't know about that ELF stuff, they are not really well known for bike stuff. Motul doesn't get on well with Kawasaki engines for some reason and when I put it in my GSXR it didn't get on well with my oil pressure gauge, cured by switch to Shell.
Is it possible to test/demonstrate the oil flow to the big ends in static environment with dead engine and good one??? I wonder if on those early fails if a gallery feed was choked by debri or partially constricted by poor build at factory etc.
We were talking at work other day about certain year Hilux that is known to have bad oil feed/spray onto rear big ends later in life for various reasons.
I wouldn't worry about weight/payload, if that was the issue for the oil you'd be doing gearboxes by now, not just big ends....

With the level of expertise available these days you could prob have the shells looked at and be told how they failed.
Eg excess heat but still getting some lubrication, excess heat with no lubrication. No excess external heat just crap oil etc....

Hi ya Night Falcon, some say patience is a virtue, in my case it's just bloody expensive :p

Hi ya Muzz, when the big end begins to go it starts making an audible knocking noise that increases in volume in a very short space of time. It coincides with fragments of metal being picked up by the sump bung and oil consumption. This is unfortunately not a case of being able to ignore a harmless noise, this noise means business, self destructive business :eek5:
I wonder if on those early fails if a gallery feed was choked by debri or partially constricted by poor build at factory etc.
Hi ya R650R, the debris idea could safely be ruled out as the big end issue is identical, but on two different brand new K9 engines. The poor build at factory could safely be ruled out by the reputation of the bike not indicating this is a trend. In saying that, anything is possible.
I wouldn't worry about weight/payload, if that was the issue for the oil you'd be doing gearboxes by now, not just big ends....
Prior to the DRZ400 I had a DRZ250. in 40,000km I did two gearbox rebuilds after stripping the hardening off the faces and did one full engine rebuild due to running a big end. I shifted to the DRZ400 for more engine robustness. The gearbox has shown no sign of issue, so that's one item successfully addressed, now just the big end. I am confident that your suggestion is right that weight isn't the direct cause, it will certainly add a stress factor into the mix but it is most likely not the direct cause
With the level of expertise available these days you could prob have the shells looked at and be told how they failed.
Eg excess heat but still getting some lubrication, excess heat with no lubrication. No excess external heat just crap oil etc....
The DRZ400 runs needle roller big end bearings in a pressed crank. The crank needs to be pressed apart to inspect. Two failed cranks have been inspected by a third party engineer when Suzuki NZ became involved in trying to discover the issue. The diagnosis was that the crank had been worn out of round by what they could only comment as "excessive use". Their third party engineer's input was primarily to identify the issue, not identify the cause.
What I will be doing on the next two engines is oil tests after each oil change with oil samples through Goughs Oil Laboratories. This will give great insight to the possible theory that the oil's protection properties have expired. This will be documented in the main article and should be quite interesting.
Cheers for the input all :niceone:

Hi ya James, In order to try and isolate the issue this engine has been rebuilt stock 400, the engine in the new bike arriving next week will remain stock 400. Both these bike will be identical and serve as backups for each other. However, the engine just pulled out I'm going to have a bit of fun with. It is being built up into a big block with the aim to squeeze as much out of it as possible. Quite looking forward to the outcome of that one

Bush bashing. No, I'll try my luck with some grass, but sometimes, just sometimes, you get the idea you're probably in the wrong place. Not to mention the long grass made it super hard pushing the bike back and forth to get her turned around. Lifted the heart rate quite well :sweatdrop but escaped dropping the bike (barely).

Going for nice long walks. Ignore a sign that says something about road not maintained (pfft, as if that's stopped me for the last few days). Yes well, a locked gate down a blardy hill will stop you real good. Then you'll do some weight lifting trying to drag your bike around on the hill. And still fooking walk down and back to Akaroa Head Lighthouse (http://www.remotemoto.com/articles/akaroa-head-lighthouse/) (another foo-foo valve broken).

Ok, so sometimes tis not his fault and the weather doesn't play ball, like doing Mt Rochfort (http://www.remotemoto.com/articles/mt-rochfort/) <_< Just look at that stunning vista in the second shot!
<a href="http://s210.photobucket.com/user/_Gremlin/media/20160117%20-%20South%20Island%20Trip/DSC00509_zpsyoj9uyqq.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb236/_Gremlin/20160117%20-%20South%20Island%20Trip/DSC00509_zpsyoj9uyqq.jpg~original" border="0" alt=" photo DSC00509_zpsyoj9uyqq.jpg"/ width="640"></a>

But every now and then, you get some really stunning shots:
<a href="http://s210.photobucket.com/user/_Gremlin/media/20160117%20-%20South%20Island%20Trip/DSC00305_zpsmmi0brvw.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb236/_Gremlin/20160117%20-%20South%20Island%20Trip/DSC00305_zpsmmi0brvw.jpg~original" border="0" alt=" photo DSC00305_zpsmmi0brvw.jpg"/ width="640"></a>
Lake Lyndon (http://www.remotemoto.com/articles/lake-lyndon/) around 8pm, and even got the moon in the shot!

Rai Falls (http://www.remotemoto.com/articles/rai-falls/). Finally some experimenting with the point and shoot paid off.
Most importantly however, at the end of all that, you storm the leaderboard, topping it, and showing those South Island buggers with little sub 650cc bikes how to do it. Priceless  :bleh:

Haha, just got back to internet connection and your post has put a smile on my face! A challenge is what it's all about right? :)
Looks like you have another GS on your heels, Topher claimed another 20ish Mototokens today! And after flaunting your 1st place glory as a North Islander perhaps this may motivate a serious challenge :shifty: time will tell…

As a foreigner invading your lusty isle, I expect the inhabitants to try to re-claim some of their dignity :niceone: It's probably more satisfying now that two R1200GSA are leading the board :ride:
Currently I do less than a trip a year south, so with very few tokens on my doorstep it's inevitable. However, I'm going to milk it while I got it

Real nice spot that  I popped in there on Sunday for a look/swim. Pelorous was heaving with people swimming but there was nobody at the Rai falls. I think you may have spured me into action to go get some Mototokens, I've been to busy yakking and fishing to ride the bike since I got back from the North island :(
Stay tuned.....

Just finished my time in South Island New Zealand - Post from Facebook:

South Island New Zealand well and truly in the bag and what an awesome ride it has been. This is what my 7200km, 25 day journey around this beautiful island looks like. If you are considering an adventurous tour of the South Island then you must check out www.remotemoto.com. This is the site I used to plan my journey, the most comprehensive site of its type I have ever seen and well and truly gets my vote. Everything from easy gravel tracks to real challenging terrain all for the taking. Highly recommend.
Next, North Island New Zealand before heading across the Pacific :D

Hi ya Ken, cheers for the heads up. I am really stoked, feedback like that makes the mammoth effort involved in RemoteMoto worthwhile.
Lyndon is one heck of a rider, he covered some serious ground in his brief time in the South Island. I managed to catch up with him for dinner one night. Really nice guy, very very ambitious, but then again you'd have to be to bite into the Races to Places (http://www.adventure-spec.com/blog/blog/category/lyndon-poskitt) project.
It was great that the weather played nice for him while he was in the South Island, he has a video of his ride coming out soon, very much looking forward to watching it.
Cheers :niceone:

You need to strike while the iron is hot and get something international rolling man. Framework is already there ;)
Not that easy though, I know, I know :bleh:
I send people that come through the shop to the site every week and if I see any of them again they only have good things to say.

Hi all,
Firstly, this is in no way a 'gripe' - just not sure if i'm missing something:
Is Remotemoto now only paid access (via membership fee)?
Only asking as I have not been on for a while, and whereas previously I had registered then been able to view the site and uploaded some reviews/photos - now upon log in it keeps referring me to pay and/or switch account type & pay before I am able to access much of the content.
No issues if so as I'm aware a lot of work has been put into it, just checking I am not missing anything :)
Cheers,
N

Hi Nick, cheers for that. The reason you won't be able to view the link will be because you'll be logged in to RemoteMoto and in a limbo state as the website will be waiting to see what you want to do with your account. Agreed, a bit of a funny state but just a part of the transition to the new format.

The problem with the pay wall is that last time I was on RM there was precious little North Island content. As it now stands, I'd have to pay $99 to see if that has changed. If the North Island content is still as lacking as it was previously, that's a hundy down the drain for me.

Hi Mike, while half a dozen Mototokens have popped up on the North Island, not one North Island route has been logged for RemoteMoto. RemoteMoto is a comprehensive South Island route planning resource.
I hope that helps Mike

Another great looking ride and web site for that matter.
makes me wonder if I am living in the wrong island?
a couple of questions in general
how cold does it get on these sorts of rides, is it seasonal?
i have been to MaCraes (?) mine they said that for parts of the year the snow covers everything I could see
what type of skill level required for riding
is the fuel range of a bike important on some rides.
does the rider have to be self sufficient?

Hi eldog, thanks for the kind words :)
That's a very broad set of questions that varies from rider to rider and location to location, but here's a basic rundown on the remote/adventurous type of riding that the RemoteMoto website focuses on:
Q: how cold does it get on these sorts of rides, is it seasonal?
A: Absolutely seasonal. Summer and winter in the South Island have extreme differences in temperature, more so at higher altitude. Many of the Central Otago routes and other high altitude tracks throughout the South Island are inaccessible in winter due to the lowered snowline.
Q: what type of skill level required for riding?
A: RemoteMoto has all the routes graded from Grade 1 (easy/scenic) to Grade 5 (technical/expert). Choose your preferred grade routes and fill ya boots!
Q: is the fuel range of a bike important on some rides?
A: When you string together certain routes together, a long fuel range is required. Some routes however have fuel stations readily available and long distance tanks are not necessary. I have a 28 litre tank that accommodates for 490km range, most guys I ride with have tanks with around a 300km range
Q: does the rider have to be self sufficient?
A: If you are heading up into the High Country or anywhere that presents risk or danger (such as rivers rising and being unable to return) then absolutely. When heading away solo I always thoroughly prepare by leaving an intentions plan and taking with me a comprehensive set of survival gear, sleeping bag that goes to -30, geodesic tent to handle snow and strong winds, excess warm clothing, 3+ days excess spare food, first aid kit and an emergency beacon.
Cheers eldog

lol that is a ridiculous price for what is essentially 3 tarpaulin dry sacks which would be less than $100.... zip-ties could do the same job as their rig....

Hi ya R650R, unfortunately not my friend. There are a number of RemoteMoto products currently being developed with some not too far away from release. All the of the products are ones I have purpose designed for the DRZ400 and tackling rough terrain on multi-day riding and camping trips. They have served me well and I am very excited to bring these to the market for other riders. All products have been thoroughly tested and I can bring them to the market with 100% confidence that they are top quality and up to the task. I won't be drifting into developing products that I don't personally use and have a proven track record with as I won't be able to guarantee the results, fitment, ease of use, etc.
Cheers

Is there access to the Mataura River Headwaters Track from the end of Cainard Road?
Wording suggests road continues past the bridge, but not legal access?

Hi ya Pete. They sure did, and I think the state of the river was a big factor in opening it, great to hear the river it cleaning up!
