Rules regarding Bus Lanes at Traffic Lights??

OK. I was thinking about this when I was going away from AMPS yesterday, and I was at the intersection of Khyber Pass and Symonds/Mt Eden Rd.

Where bus lanes go through intersections the lights have usually been modified for an additional B light for the bus to go first.

Motorbikes can use those bus lanes, so can we go on the B? After all, we don't want to hold up a bus that might be behind us?? :devil2:

By extrapolation, if we can go on the B, does that mean we can go on the B if we are in another lane ie one of the normal lanes??

Pretty sure it's come up before, but as far as I'm aware it's only buses that can go on the white B, if you're in the lane then best to get out of the way before they start moving :rofl:

Yes it has been covered.. B is only for a 'bus type vehicle' etc (read bus). You know the Mt Wellington highway, that three lane bridge with the lane lights on it - well after that you can turn off to go up a hill and towards Glen Innes. At those lights my mate went with the B light in front of a copper... they didn't do anything. I think as it is a rather obscure rule and no one bothers enforcing it.

I have tried it about four times these last two weeks and it seems the lights phase better (eg change quicker) when I jump in the bus lane. I also don't have to worry about wankers trying to race me to the lane merging section.

Bus lanes as far as I know are only for buses, legaly anyway.

3.6 Traffic signals in form of T or B


(1) While a white T or a white B signal is displayed, a driver of a light rail vehicle (in the case of a white T) or a bus (in the case of a white B) facing the traffic signal may—

(a) travel straight ahead or turn right or turn left; or

(b) turn right or turn left even though a traffic signal is displaying a red signal in the form of a disc.

(2) While a yellow T or a yellow B signal alone is displayed, a driver of a light rail vehicle (in the case of a yellow T) or a bus (in the case of a yellow B) facing the traffic signal must not enter the controlled area.
(3) However, if the driver of the light rail vehicle (in the case of a yellow T) or bus (in the case of a yellow B) is so close to the limit line or intersection when the yellow T or yellow B signal first appears that the driver cannot safely stop the vehicle before passing the limit line or entering the intersection, the driver may proceed with the movement otherwise prohibited by subclause (2).


(4) While a red T or a red B signal alone is displayed, a driver of a light rail vehicle (in the case of red T) or a bus (in the case of red B) facing the traffic signal must not—

(a) proceed beyond any limit line associated with the traffic signal; or

(b) in the absence of a limit line, enter the intersection at or near which the traffic signal is installed.
