View Full Version : How could this happen

So I did an oil change a week ago and noticed the oil sump washer is slightly twisted. Is this from being done up too tight? But that would mean the surface it meets with would be twisted also? (which I noticed it is)
Any ideas on how this might've happened?
I've done all the oil changes on it since 17k and it's now hit 48k so thats quite a few and never tightened it too tight. It doesn't leak oil or anything.

Crush on the tiny wee bit of countersink before the thread on the sump, perhaps?
Or you don't replace it every time?

...I have a straight one, but it's on my Honda...maybe I should replace it with your bent one?...

I think he is saying maybe the washer was not seated correctly on the bolt when presented to the sump and tightened up. Got hung up a little and when tightened formed the bent shape you see now. I haven't seen it myself but I guess its possible.

Depending on the construction of the sump plug at the seating area, the seal might have not quite centred and the plug has pushed on that cupped portion, being alloy it is soft to seal but also distorts easily.
There might be a slight mark on one side of the seal also.

Yes. I dont remember the diameter off hand but I always get my oil/filter/washer from a honda dealership and the washer is always the correct one.
Next time its due for a change I will have to check the sump surface though I'm sure it's slightly warped also.
