I returned to motorbikes after 35 years in the wilderness - an over protective wife who was able to channel all my free disposable income into horses, trucks etc. Now have new wife, totally supportive of my desire to relive my youth.
I've had this modern classic 500cc RE for about a year, progressed to R status and now have yet another year before I can go Full. This is the frustrating part, I want to get something newer in style and performance but all the good ones are outside the LAMS list. A MG V7 or a Thruxton are on my wish list but to have one sitting in the garage for a year makes no sense. Oh, what to do?

Welcome to Kiwibiker. Good to hear you have upgraded the wife lol
Personally, I'd ride out the year on the enfield and put the money saved from not upgrading to something you don't much want anyways and put it toward something you do want in a years time.
Don't worry about the noodle posting above, he is like the street kid that sees a blank wall, then puts his small minded tag on it, all the while wallowing in the misguided notion that everyone thinks he is cool

Sugi,
Thank you for the sage advice and the keen observation about the "noodle". I suppose when you think about it, it's only 52 weekends, of which at least half would be too wet to rid in.
After all, part of the experience is the window (read TradeMe) shopping and reading the various reviews.

... it's only 52 weekends, of which at least half would be too wet to ride in.
If you are of the opinion it is "Too wet to ride" on half the years weekends ... perhaps your ex wife knew more than you realized.
I might suggest Rider Training ... on how to ride with confidence in the wet. OR ... move somewhere with less rainfall ...
After all, part of the experience is the window (read TradeMe) shopping and reading the various reviews.
No matter how good the reviews are of ANY bike ... it won't change the weather forecast one iota.
Did your NEW wife increase your life insurance ... ???

I'm in a similar boat in that I find myself pondering on upgrading to something I don't really want (a "big" lams) in hopes that it will keep me satisfied enough till I get my full. And with the crazy prices of the lams (in most cases being pricier than some more than decent bigger bikes) doesn't help matters much. But I agree with sugi, wait it out, and save those dollars so when you get your full TradeMe will be your oyster.
Grow a pair.
But you gotta admit, that was funny. Sorry..

You got it, it's only 52 weeks, and the main thing is you got a bike, so those weeks will fly by!
I'm sure you will have observed internet noodle variety #2 has entered the fray. Type 2 noodles come in with their chests so puffed out it is a wonder the ykk zippers in their jackets can take the strain. These barrel chested all weather bikers are self appointed authorities on what a "real" biker is and never hesitate to give their over blown egos a good stroking while admonishing other riders for not aspiring to their own lofty standards of bikerdom.
Rest assured, there are good bikers here. Post count is no indication though ;)

Well that was an interesting baptism to the Kiwibiker site.
Apart from having to "grow some" an intriguing comment as I assume we were referring to hair, but I did not indicate that I was folicly challenged. How very perceptive.
To those who gave balanced advice, thank you. No doubt I will have the opportunity to contribute to the various discussions. Now I must go and "grow some"

Mike, welcome aboard the mad house and back to biking. A few years back a mate got back into riding after a 25 year tea break.
He bought a lams Suzuki Vstrom 650, new. He loves the thing, and rides all manner of weather on it. He's finished his license and looking at removing the restricters that made it a lams bike. The bike has been fitted with all manner of accessories, it gets great mpg, comfy and fun to ride. Have a cruise around the interweb for info on em.
For me, meh, not my style of ride, but as a back country road machine it does a good job putting a smile on my dial.
Btw, it's well worth doing the riding course too, ya'll pick up many good tips.
Have fun eh, cheers R

Meh, the faggots seem to be having a field day in this thread. Don't listen to them, it'll turn you gay.
Right, time for some home truths.
1. You're probably in excess of 50 years of age. You'll die soon, best you do what makes you happy with what time you have left.
2. You ride a Royal Enfield. You're not likely to get pulled over on that and equally as unlikely on a MG V7 or a Thruxton.
3. If you do get pulled over, it's highly unlikely you'll get a ticket seeing as you're an old cunt having a pootle on a dry day on a granddad's bike.
4. You could have insurance issues if you bin a bike outside your licence conditions. This comes down to risk, obviously. See my first post in this thread.
Or, you could listen to Sugi and the other homos and stick with a gay bike that doesn't make you happy for another year. If that was an option you'd still be with the bitch and probably would never have started this thread.
So, are you going to grow a pair?

Jeez, all this talk of gays and homos and needing to grow a pair - what a crack-up.

Not so long ago a learner had to suffer learning on a 250 cc......
in came the eagerly awaited lams scheme.......
Bikes up to 650 cc......
Quite a choice of bikes to learn on....
coz if you havent got a full licence you are a learner.....
So get any of those LAMS bikes and learn....

Look up Ace performance in the UK.... they specialise in the RE 500's and do a 'fireball' kit for them. I dont know how much more it will give you, but it seems a popular improvement. (You may need a spare head to send them)....
They seem to think that they might be able to get nigh on a 'ton' out of the new Conti......

Your better off asking what brand of keyboard is best on KB, higher the post count the better.
I had a 1972 BMW 500 a few years back, nice bike but not much power. I imagine an Enfield would have even less.
Currently riding a mix of 70's/80's BMW 900's and a Commando and recently a 94 Ducati 600ss, 53 very willing and usable HP. Had a Thruxton for a while and power wise it would
be similar to the 600.
Find a better motorcycle forum, this one is just for tyre kicking

I noticed that the British system of bike power grading is a little more flexible. The A2 rating allows for bigger bikes with some form of engine restriction, a good idea as you can go through the R period on the bike you would ultimately want but with restricted power. Should be introduced here.

Thought about a 650 v strom? Maybe not all are LAMS but great bike for the money?
Edit, I see on reading page 2 that Cassina and Ruaphu beat me to it.

it is.
But the (increased) expense and difficulty in removing the restrictions is a factor in said motorcycle being ON the list.
