View Full Version : Sometimes it is a bugger living rural

I have my eye on a bike...It is in Alexandra! Couldn't get further away. So, here I am trying to be the logistics organiser should I have to travel south to get it.
Firstly I have been quoted at least $495, door to door.
So, I do some digging and goggling, can I get there cheaper? Course I can....
But can I get back just as cheap? Umm, maybe not...
The bus from Te Aroha to Hamilton is $15.00, then there is travel to the airport and the flight to Queenstown, that is nearly $300 give or take...
I could travel to Auckland on Naked Bus for $5.00, then get a plane one way for $99.00!! So that is cool for a start!
The seller of the bike may pick me up I hope....a 45 minute trip for him. Or I could hitch hike I suppose?
Then I thought if some kind person loaned me a trailer that was legal, I would drive down..
The cost of the ferry and the diesel made this an expensive affair, but it would be fun, because then I could ride, sleep in the van and have a bit of fun at the same time.
So, first and foremost is there anyone that would lend a trailer that is legal for a few days? I guess I have to cross that bridge first..
I guess most would say go for the Biketrans option right?
Planes, Trains and auto-mobiles.....Just like the movie. It could be fun.
Mind you, the pick up would have to be in the holidays, that's the only option I have of getting down there. As long as he has the money, it will sit patiently waiting for me to get it somehow...
Thoughts anyone? Cheers! :)

I can not afford to run around the country picking up bikes, because if I factor in lost income the bike becomes financially uneconomical & it makes the bike trans option look cheap. Have you factored in lost productivity at home?
There's a bunch of racers going down for the cams festival & the Burt Munro, some will be travelling with room for an extra bike.

Other than the lawns, the dogs...There's nothing keeping me here...:)

Depending on how soon you need it, I could possibly ride it as far as Wellington on one of my many trips there. Its a bit late for this week though as both directions are already booked.
If you do decide to fly down I would also be happy to meet you at Queenstown and bring you through to Alex.

Or..... Fly to Dunedin/Christchurch cheaper to go to a main centre. Hitch the rest of the way.

Biketranz is the best option.
Really depends on what your time is worth. Mine is worth too much to be shuttling around picking up bikes. I've done it before multiple times back when I was an unemployed "student" tho. A lot of fun for sure. Auckland -> Wellington, Auckland -> Rotorua and Auckland -> Whangers.
Only way I'd do it again was if I found a KILLER deal that would cover my transport and time costs (so a bike about 1000--1500 below market value) so I could break even when I sell it.
Going island to island and dealing with ferry bullshit is where I draw the line. Gets expensive fast.
