Why is it that if I record an audio CD to a CD-R disc it plays fine (on CD players, I'm talking here) but if I use a CD-RW disc, many players won't play it?
Just wondering...

Those re writeable cd's are shit for music, mostly. I have heaps that play fine on some stereos and dont play on others. Just a big con to get our money, tis the jews. :2thumbsup

because your winblows probably doesn't finalise the cd as a iso9660 fs, being that it expects more to be written later.

Depends on the player. I believe most modern stuff like hi-fi systems will play CD-RW alright, but often older cars might have issues etc.

The fucken disc won't play because the god damned record player doesn't know where to put the needle to get music.
You have to tell it you won't writing no more banjo playing to the disc or it does not know it is a playable disc because it is still waiting for you as a writable disc.

To the best of my understanding taking a backup of existing material, or copying individual songs from one medium to another for personal consumption such as a CD "mix tape" is not illegal.
Failing to destroy backups you no longer own an original copy of is a different matter. Having both copies available for consumption is also another.
IIRC the people who have been prosecuted for writing CD's got done because they profited from them.

http://www.iplawyer.co.nz/2013/03/05/criminal-copyright-infringement/
Criminal liability
In addition, s 131 of the Copyright Act creates a criminal offence for making or dealing with infringing objects. The section has three distinct offences:
1. Where someone copies a work and makes that copy available for sale, knowing the object to be an infringing copy.
2. Where someone makes or possesses an object which they know will be used to make infringing copies for sale or hire or for use in the course of a business.
3. Where someone plays, shows or performs in public a work knowing that this will infringe copyright in the work.
The prosecution must prove the elements of the offence beyond reasonable doubt. This is higher than the standard in civil cases, where the plaintiff must prove the case on the balance of probabilities.
The maximum penalty for an offence against s 131 is a fine of up to $10,000 for every infringing copy, but not exceeding $150,000 in respect of the same transaction, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years. As with civil proceedings, an order for delivery up of the infringing material can be sought.

Me? I'm innocent.
Worst I could be up for would be using an iPod... or maybe making my music able to be streamed by anyone on the same wireless network?
*edit*
OR taking a backup of my iTunes.
