View Full Version : Scooter or bike?

Currently have 50cc scooter which I've been pretty happy with, but I'm looking at getting my motorcycle license so I can get something a bit bigger and get on the open road.

I'm currently looking at two options, a larger scooter like a Kawasaki J300, or a bike (looking at the Ninja 300).

The only reason I'm considering the scooter is the huge amount of storage space they have. Practically I think the scooter is the better option but I'm interested to know how they handle 100km/h highways. Anyone ridden one of these that could give me there thoughts?

Some awesome tips for you.

1. Don't ask a biker site whether scooters or bikes are better and expect more than a handful of weird scooter riders to suggest a scooter.

2. I think an SUV has more storage space than a scooter, which clearly, using your logic, says you must buy one. Actually, get a small box truck, you can drive it on your drivers licence and has EVEN MORE space. But then, it's probably smarter to get your truck licences and then the sky is the limit! Do you need to carry 50 tonne odd? You could with a big rig!

3. I've ridden a scooter or two. I waved at motorcyclists to confuse them. Then I got my bike back from service and the world was in harmony again.

I have more storage than a scooter.

You can put on a skirt and heals though if you like.

Those Kawasaki 300s are actually a rebranded Kymco DOwntown 300, save some money. Also Ninja 300s are gay, gay, gay. Buy a CFMoto 650 if you have to go that way

Motorbikes are 100 times more popular than scooters for a ride out of town.

So do skinny young ones and even women! Just do it. I started off on a scooter. Have a bike now. Do I miss the scooter? Yes if its license kurfew and I want to have another beer and hang out for another 2 hours or if I'm lazy and just need to go to the shops. Most other times I grab the bike.

Scooters are ok round town, and can be fun on the open road, if your not wanting speed. Go with whatever you want, and enjoy. :2thumbsup

But, it's still classified as a scooter...

There are a number of scooters which are more than capable of maintaining open road speeds and exceeding them...

This class of scooters is too much of a compromise. Around town something small and light is better. On the open road while they may cruise at the posted limits they are not much fun and heavy compared to comparable bikes.

I was given a loaner Gilera 150 2 stroke thing while my bike was in for service. It was likely extremely optimistic, but I had an indicated 130 on the clock.... from a 150 with me on it

Sadly the bikers with attitude like to hang around with nothing better to do than disparage scooters. I love scooters for scootering, and bikes for biking. Whatever floats your boat is fine and this forum should be free of bikers who don't feel the same, please.

I love bashing scooters as much as the next biker. Why deprive me of the simple pleasures in my life?

I was reading a bike mag on Friday, has a special on scooters. They made a very apt point. To a non biker, motorbikes are scary.
Our clutch is what lever? What foot changes gear? In what direction? Why doesn't it fall over?
A scooter is simple, it's twist and go, it's not scary and very acceptable to utilise for commuting. Once someone gets a scooter, they will either just carry on using it to save pennies and time commuting, or they will enjoy the freedom, get curious about motorbikes and want more power. Plenty of peoples first experience on 2 wheels is on a scooter.

Not everyone grew up with a family member who rides/rode, or got a motorbike as a child. Scooters allow a taste of 2 wheels for the masses who may be tentative of motorcycling. More people getting into motorbikes means larger voter base of motorcyclists, bigger market of bikes and a more motorcycle aware population.

I used to have a giggle at scooters, now I give them a wave and a smile. Scooters grow up to be big boy bikes too!

There are also geared manual scooters, mostly Vespa, which do highway speeds. Not my choice for long distance travel.

What is it about little wheels that inspires trolling? Small minds get enraged.

Any vehicle will get trolled if it's funny. If someone pokes a bit of fun at you, laugh. There's no point being sensitive and miserable. Feed a troll, KB would be boring without them.
