View Full Version : Tile app for locating misplaced stuff

Balu got sick and tired of me constantly "losing" my keys, wallet, head etc. So several months ago he bought a set of 4 Tiles which work using Bluetooth. They finally arrived last week and I now have one on my keyring, one secreted inside my wallet and another on my school keys. Now sure, if my keys were stolen the first thing any thief would do is remove the Tile (if they see it) but these are primarily designed for people like me who put their stuff down somewhere and can't then find it again.
I've already had to use it (you activated them via an app on your phone) and it's been great. No more lost keys!
But it got me wondering. For every stolen bike thread I've seen, I wondered if these might work for a vehicle. Ok, they are designed to be stuck on a phone, or keys etc. but given that you can find a small portable item using this, surely it would work for something larger? Vehicle GPS tracking devices are expensive to buy and then I believe there is a yearly fee attached to using the service. I haven't tried sticking the last one inside the fairing of my bike (they come with super adhesive stickies) but I might try it just to see how effective it is.
As they work via Bluetooth they should transmit as long as they are in range of another Bluetooth device. You can also report your Tile as stolen which can apparently "speak" to other Tiles and eventually track yours down.
Has anyone already tried using this el-cheapo version of tracking for a vehicle?

And....so it goes on and on...
Tried a lanyard around the neck for keys? ....:) or a chain to the pocket, purse? Simple stuff, rather than the tech?

Stuff has been done for years with vehicle tracking systems, not with bluetooth, but the same tech of tracking sig strength and activating audible alarms when close enough is nothing new. Generally done in conjunction with GPS to get in range to begin with.
Bluetooth is not a MANET (mobile adhoc self configurating network) so won't be able to track your tile unless someone else has the app on their phone and authorises the thingo to talk back to internet. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I wouldn't rely on it; especially considering the battery life on a tile itself.

3 different classes, 1 up to 100m, 2 up to 10m, 3, up to 1m.
Then you have bluetooth headsets for helmets and they're getting up to 1km ish...

Yeah, RipperRoo92 (son) gave me a whistling locator not that long ago 'cos even he got sick of me losing my keys. It can be turned on and off though, so that kinda defeats the purpose for a person like me... I generally find the same as Tazz - the slightest noise makes it go off!!

A little distracting when going like the clappers.
I don't recommend bursting out with laughter should it happen either.

You're overthinking this, because you have to convince her its her idea. There is likely an app for that.

Yeah - I know you are joking .. but seriously, no I don't. My cellphone is for me to contact people with - not the other way round ... All I need to be able to do is make calls and send and receive texts. It does all that. Sometimes I forget to turn it on for several weeks.
I've got by on this planet for more than 50 years with minimal technology and I think I can cope for the rest of the time on the same basis.
I'm still a little freaked listening to the computer on my bike boot up when I turn on the key ..
PS: The apps are amusing ... but seriously? Not interested ..

Horses for courses :pinch:
My mobile is almost never off (save for a restart or in an area/flight where mobiles must be off), most people ringing me... but it's a business tool to me...
