View Full Version : Traffic lights not changing

Every junction I approach on my bike (to turn right usually is the most common time), doesn't go green for me unless there's a car behind me or I have to wait around 3/4 phases (maybe more, but I haven't waited any longer than that) before the lights decide to let me go. I guess it's due to so many of the local lights having pressure sensors embedded in the roads?! But damn it's annoying!
My question is, am I the only one so sick of waiting that I no longer do?
As soon as I know I'm at one of these damn car biased junctions, I wait for a safe opportunity and just gun it through the red arrow. I suspect I'll get a ticket eventually, but are we expected to just wait around all night for a car to pull up behind us, before being given legal allowance to proceed? (But obviously not me of course, as I would never ride my bike outside my learner licence conditions! I mean after 10pm??? when the roads are half empty??? That would be far too DANGEROUS for heavens sake)

you have to wave your hand in a certain manner to trigger the special sensors.

The lights are triggered by a changing magnetic field as your bike passes over the induction loop. Your Hyosung is made primarily of plastic, so no changing magnetic field.

You are in Auckland ... nobody outside Auckland cares about your problem.
Nobody else IN Auckland cares about your problem.

Install a cast iron drip tray under the engine.
It will solve the lights issue. Also you can filter the collected oil through a sock and add it back into the bike after each ride. Its should also catch pieces that may fall off (eg pistons, valves conrods and so on).

I swear most people that make these threads ride Hyosungs.
Never had an issue myself.

The other thing is that someone might be taking the mick. I had a chat with a guy down here who works on the cameras for NZTA. He said that they can control the lights and phases, and they can for instance change the cycle to give priority to emergency vehicles (although that's going to be automated soon). He said that they also use it to keep suspected drunk drivers in one place at night - he reckoned that a couple of times they'd just left the person stuck on red and eventually they fell asleep - then the cops turned up and 'woke hem up'.
Have you made any enemies at NZTA? :)

Years ago I pulled up beside a motorcycle :Police: at the lights in the early hours....we sat...and sat...and sat there waiting for them to change, they didn't. I looked across at him and hooked it into gear and rode off, expecting him to pull me up...but he didn't :wings: Not to say they wouldn't today though

Yes! Loads! But I didn't think they knew it was me?!
Bet that speed van parked under the Patiki Rd on ramp every night hates me after the past month of speeding past his 80kmh speed trap with the finger up everytime. He got me twice in the truck but no more!:nya:

I found one set of lights in Christchurch to be particularly bad, corner of Springs Rd and Main South Rd. Particularly on the DR it took so long to change I've never seen the lights change without a car to trigger it. A couple of times I decided to wait and see how long it takes, after about 5 minutes a car showed up and triggered it anyway, both times, so I never did learn how long it takes.
I noticed on the instructable link above that in the comments someone said in Wisconsin they have a law which states that if a bike stops at a light for more than 1 minute it can then 'run' the light if it's safe to do so. Maybe a rule like that would be helpful in NZ, not that it would help me much now after having moved to oz.

Park yer bike. Get off, walk over and press the pedestrian cross button for your direction of travel.
Triggers the lights.
Just sayin.

Reminds me of when I worked in Penrose in the mid 80s, used to have to cross gt sth road to head home 2 lanes both ways
bumper to bumper, used to shoot down footpath to pedestrian crossing and hit button and wait for all the traffic to stop, ride
accross it to my side then traffic free 2 lanes just for me:laugh:I actually never saw a pedestrian on that crossing:innocent:

On a bike you are a motorist. Pedestrian buttons are for pedestrians. If the RCA can't manage to have an intersection that recognises a motor vehicle then all bets are off. Wait 25 minutes for another vehicle to trigger the lights? Get fucked. Give it an acceptable amount of time with no opposing travel and then go for it. The definition of acceptable might have to be decided in court but then if you go through a red light when a cop is watching you deserve the ticket.
Ring the council and complain. If you are stopped on the loops and it doesn't register you it is either broken, out of tune, just shit or you are on a Hyobag. Whatever it is, something needs to change.

I had this happen at a set of lights in Ponsonby - was waiting almost 20 minutes for the damn lights to change which only happened once a car pulled up behind.
No, I have never ridden a hyosung - I'm too short to sit one!

Oh heck, I even have this at one particular set of lights in my little runabout car. Soooo, being it's normally 03.30am when this happens...I treat it as an uncontrolled intersection when there's nobody coming. Not correct, but what's a guy to do?

Typical, more likely to put in a red light camera than fix the underlying issue in today's NZ, enforce compliance.

On the plus side, you will pick up screws that miss the front tire, but were heading for the rear. You might het home and find a new set of pliers stuck under your bike.that's a bonus.

Never had a problem with this. When you approach the intersection note where the sensors are on the road. Ride right on top of them. If that doesn't work, put your side stand down right on top of it.
The sensors work by induction so needs a good bit of metal to register that something is there. Often times the sidestand will do the trick.

thats interesting, I wander why my friends cbr125 wont trigger them then, being a steel frame, My Suzuki gw250 triggers it all day long...

Bag on Hyosungs all you want people, I don't care. Mine is just a means to an end and that end is exactly 12 months away from today.

That's a waste of time, there's more than enough metal in the bike for the loops to register - I spent about six years installing such wonders into the road (truth be told it's literally just insulated electrical cable), when in good condition they will detect a steel toecap walking over, it's only when their condition degrades from corrosion or other external damage that reduces their sensitivity.
If you experience one that doesn't trigger, report it to the relevant council, don't hang up until you get the CSR (Customer Service Request) number so you know it's definitely in the system. Keep calling and reporting it each week until it's done.
