Hey Guys,
Great Site and have read through some awesome and helpful posts already. I am sure this question has been asked before, but just to get the latest consensus, which bike do you recommend for a newbie?
I have ridden 500cc bikes before but in a different country where there is no learners system (that's right!) and its been a while since i rode, not to mention the change in landscape, mostly flat surfaces and not even close to up and down NZ roads.
I am looking at Hyosung GT250R but have read online that it has very sluggish pickup from standstill and even rolling. is that true? i dont really like the looks of ninja(sorry fanboys! :P) and i think i shouldnt go higher than 250 to learn on. I am about 5 feet 10 inches so something for my frame and a comfy ride would be good. not looking for a SS but something with a little pull would be awesome! and 250 might have more than enough for me!
Thanks guys,
Ender EnZed

Budget?
Get a VTR or Hornet 250 for < $4k. Can't really go wrong with one of those.

Thanks for that. Budget - i have been looking and all the good 2nd hand bikes are around 3.5-4.5k with Hyosung brand spankers new GT250R being $6995, i am tempted.
Peace of mind is big for me so willing to spend. i know financing first bike is stupid but i might do some finance.
will check out the bikes you mentioned!
i am currently torn between the Kawasaki ninja(lower ride height means may get a flat foot on ground as i am only 5 feet 10 ~175cm)
AND
Hyosung GT250R which is obviously cheap for a brand new bike.
inclined to go to a dealer eitherway whether i buy brand new or used. Red Baron in Grey Lynn have a deal for newbie where i get $500 in free essentials gear and also a riding lesson.

just noticed that the Honda CBR300R is on special for $6995. undeniably has better service and support being a Honda, and i will surely pass the 'kiwibiker' test by getting a tried and tested brand/bike. http://www.hondamotorbikes.co.nz/bikes/road-bikes/sport/cbr300r/

I just bought my Inazuma the other day - $4995 + ORC brand new and shiny. Not at all sluggish - in fact it might even be q bit too peppy in 1st. Very comfortable to sit for long periods of time too. Doesn't really look or feel like a "small bike".
Edit: I'm 5'6" so slightly shorter than you and it's almost too big of a bike for me so might be just perfect for you!

You may as well save some money and get a near new CBR250.

Also, 175cm is basically the size almost all motorcycles are made for. You'll fit just fine on anything you look at.

Congrats Rabbid. The CBR300R is a great first bike, and with Honda quality and service you'll definitely have your piece of mind.
I'd advise you look into a textile jacket next. All weather, fully amoured, removable thermal lining. Sure to find some good deals now that summer's approaching.
Anyway, stay safe and enjoy!

Definitely Cyclethreads in Takapuna. I got my boots and helmet from them. Only thing is they don't stock Astars. Otherwise I'd get everything from them. PM me for more info.
Also look at MCG in Henderson. Actually an online store and you're sure to get a good deal. Cyclespot has some good deals every now and then. Same with Motomail.
Heard great things about 1Tonne. Gear seems more than decent and prices are great. Will be looking into getting some stuff myself.
I'd recommend not to skimp on this part. You only get one body after all. And you won't go wrong with any of the big names like Astars, Revit, Berik, Dianese, etc. Also dririder for textile, all weather gear.

Hyosung Gt250R are good first bikes, especially with an aftermarket exhaust, Demon or something. They are actually one of the faster 250s around, have to be to be competition to the CB250
