Is it common for sport bikes to written off for only fairing damage for minor lay downs? Would you purchase bikes that have been re-registered after such a write off. Ive searched through the forum for similar threads and found some but I'm hoping to get more opinions.
Cheers!

If it is only fairing damage, they won't deregister.

its very common.
I have bought damaged bikes, repaired and sold with no problems.
some people have an aversion to anything thats ever been damaged - however plenty of bikes have been damaged and repaired without insurance intervention - so lots of bikes out there have had repairs or mods that are substandard, or illegal.
The bonus of buying something that was insurance written off, and de-reg'd, is that when it goes back on the orad, it has been subject to engineers reporta, as well as a far more comprehensive check that your average wof.
Id feel my arse was far more covered if I bought a bie that was recently re-regd after insurance write off, and a subsequent repair and re-reg, than just buying a random bike of unknown history. a lot of things get overlooked as basic wof checks too.

Mine K5 GSXR600 was written off after cosmetic only damage. Repairs came to 75% of the bikes value so they wrote it off.
If there is no frame or fork damage the bike is not de-registered.
I had the opportunity to buy mine back but decided to take the cash and jump on something different, someone got one hell of a bike though!

Some years ago I talked with an insurance assessor about how they make the decision to write it off vrs repairing it if the bike's not structurally damaged.
His reply was that they estimate the cost of the repair and compare that against the expected payout offset with the estimated value of the bike as is.
For example if the payout would be 15K and in the damaged condition could be sold for 10K. If their portion of the repair cost is >5K they will write the bike off.

my 06 zx10r got written off earlier this year due to only cosmetic damage.cost to replace parts was over value of bike.they wrote off.i brought back and fixed up for a fraction of payout so ended up with original bike, repaired, some extras thrown on and cash in the pocket.insurance company's have their system and they stick by it.sometimes they win sometimes they loose.at the end of the day they just want no liability to come back on them.
as for buying a recently re registered bike as others have said its just been through a detailed inspection so is better than any bike just fixed by the owner

How long is a piece of string... depends on a lot of factors, what ahs happened or what are you looking at buying???
I had a mint 400 written off that was worth 6K and had my 750 repaired when it was worth 12-14K with 4k damage...

Idd say theres a few bikes not write offs that have been damaged and repaired by uninsured riders that would be more dangerous.
Uninsured patched up cheep and sold on quick.
Be worse now trade me sells a bike condition not seen.
