I rode an old R80 BMW on the weekend.
What a great bike, took a wee while to get used to, but after hour I didnt want to give it back.
It was not over powerful, was very smooth, low revving and quite torguey, with surprisingly good handling.
very comfortable to ride.
Agreed they do not look the part, but after riding it you seem to overlook everything negative about it.
Funny how I spent my whole life riding british and jap bikes and miss riding a really good one.

If you get a chance take one for a long ride recommended.

they strange bikes.I bought a R 100 gs. I actually wanted a Honda "africa twin" or Yamaha xtz 750 but this gs came up instead. In many ways individual aspects of performance were wanting ,but as a package it was strangely appealing

:lol: Yes, the BIG block is up through the middle to Arthurs pass and down the west coast. The SMALL block is up to Alex/queenstown and back through kingston/lumsden.:2thumbsup

Swapped my wee pegaso for an old r 100/7
takes a bit of getting used to....
Brakes are not the best...( and I am riding a Harley .....)
My wife likes it though,
so now she is riding it.
I have to admit, the beemer is looking better all the time....

When they were new I thought "Why would anyone want one of those pieces of crap?"

Now they are old I want one.

I've got an R90S and love it. Remember looking at a GSPD when they first came out and thought "Oh my giddy aunt...what the hell were they thinking?". Could own one now :niceone:

I got one as a young fella, in my late 20's and had only been riding for 11 years - I didn't understand the bike and it had to go. I got another one in my late 50's, and I think I understand a bit better now.

...very true, it is the older riders that tend to own the majority of them - with age comes wisdom eh ;) (kinda limits my chances of ever owner one then )

My thoughts exactly. I remember when I was young thinking why....would you.
Now I want one too. In fact I am buying one.

I rode one in 1982 and was disapointed how under powered it was. Purchased a 750 Kawasaki instead.

Now I'd like one to turn into something interesting.

Does interesting involve making a poor mans Triton or a poor mans Harley Bobber :laugh:

I had a Z1000, my wife turned it into a washing machine and a fridge.

Yep they are great bikes, I'd always kind of admired them from afar but thought they'd be a dull ride then I took a friends for a long ride and it clicked, great handling Torquey, weight down low. They also scrub up well if you want to do light mods

Yeah, just been into mine to replace a $3 pawl spring, off the road for 3 weeks and spent over $100 on other things needing to done at the same time. Could've fixed it overnight on any other bike.
