Hey everyone,

I've had a spot of bad luck.. went for a long ride yesterday and afterwards I have discovered my license plate, and wof and registration tags are missing from the back of the bike, along with the screws that held them in place. I never left my bike alone on the ride so it seems that they have vibrated lose and fallen off and are now sitting on the side of a road somewhere on the North Shore or north of Auckland.

Any advice? I have full comprehensive insurance. Is this something I should make a claim with for insurance?

I think after I sort this mess out I am going to find a way to lock the bolt to the bike so it cant come loose!

Not sure what to do about it - however I know the reg and wof holders are about $20 each, replacement plate is $15. The bolts you need should come with the new plate. Might want to go to The Bolt Shop in Wairau and get some appropriately sized locking nuts so they don't vibrate off.

Don't bother with insurance, the excess is going to be far more than the cost of sorting it out.

Off to your local VTNZ, and explain the situation.

You'll need to get new plates issued for the bike (unless it's personalised), was about $30 from memory. Then they can sort out the paperwork, matching your WOF/Rego stuff to the new plates, new wof and reg printed etc. Should be sorted within 30min.

You could also do a custom plate so they aren't that bloody silly shape.

Also if you cut off the bolts with bolt cutters after putting on the nuts (whether they are nylock or not) the nuts then can't come off at all.

Make sure you report the lost plate to the cops..

Why. Its C.Y.A. Somebody may find and use it on a vehicle that may become a vehicle of interest.
Also somebody may find it and hand it in the cops.
They will look up who belongs to the plate and return it.

I would not rush out and get a new plate but wait a week or so.
Make one and if your pulled up say its reported and just waiting a short time
to see if it turns up.

Get a file number for the 'Lost plate" so you can prove its reported.

Cap screws and nyloc nuts will hold it.

I would say as soon as you report it lost that registration is cancelled and the get new plate process begins.

I had a blow out on drive axles down SH27 one night. Didn't notice at the time so didn't go looking but as well as destroying mudguard and taillights the carcass also took out the number plate on back of tractor unit.
The very next night the truck had new rego plates front and rear and reissued rego and RUC labels with new rego number and a very unhappy boss at all the paperwork involved.
To top it off it wasn't my truck but one of the other guys new ones. Funniest thing was one of the truck fan spotters took a photo of it days later and posted on truck forum as new rig on the road!

Btw nothing happens fast in a trucking company that isn't vital to the rig being on the road earning money. So the rapid response kinda backs up my thoughts that the rego is permanently cancelled soon as reported lost.
Otherwise it would be unimaginable headaches for cops at roadside checkpoints etc....

Don't know about costs involved but I'd report it lost asap and get new one underway...

Thanks for your advice Gremlin.. looks like I'll be heading to the local VTNZ tomorrow. I would hold out and wait to see if someone finds and hands in the plates but to be honest I rather just get back on the road ASAP.

Motomail sells Registration and WOF holders for $7 and $5 each, sounds like you got ripped off DanielM8!

Will definitely report the plate lost to the police last thing I need is fines in my name.

To get the NEW plate ... the old plate is removed/cancelled from the system. And can't be attributed back to YOU later.

Depends where you go. Some VTNZ have scooter style square plates, others had the normal rectangle ones. There's 3 in close proximity in my area (no idea why), so I got them to call and check which type of plates they had.

I was intent on rectangle as the previous one broke between 1st and 2nd numbers (sheared right down the plate) so no way I wanted an even bigger one that was easier to break. I also mounted the plate as soon as I got it to perspex. Heavier, but much stronger.

Cool ...never seen a scooter plate.
Me always had to make them up for the BSA's because the silly new ones wouldn't fit and if they were installed over hung or offset they soon broke in two.
we used to do them old style silver on black I guess the police didn't care or notice because they were old bikes?

Still legal in certain circumstances: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/71/registration-plates.html (ref Re-issuing black and silver ordinary plates)

edit: OP, that link also actually has the costs for replacement plates etc, some good info for you.

My dr lost a couple of plates before I came to this inelegant solution. Starting from the front you have a bolt, a large washer, your plate, your plate holder a rubber washer a large washer and a nylock nut. It makes for a lot less rattling too.

No rubber washers just caused the plate to tear around the washer.

Most VTNZ will give you a free label holder with a replacement label if you ask. The alloy and Perspex type. They have also given me free wof holders with replacement wof stickers.
This has been true for various bikes and reasons at kingsland, rosebank rd, Wairau and new Lynn.
The two times for the dr they also waived the fee for a replacement wof sticker when for with plates and license label. Mind you warrant was from VTNZ both times.

They are free if you got the replacement sticker from that same branch.

FJ's Bang on the money, don't screw about, just get it done, it's rego plate ffs. Ya don't need the grief if ya get pulled up, cos you'll more than likely cop a fine. Anytime ya park in a cbd the parking wardens will fine you or worst case some feckin deviant finds ya plate and uses it and you cop the flak! Feck that, report it lost and get new plates etc, done, dusted sorted, no grief.

I for got to add, unable to quickly find ribber washers of an appropriate size I used fairing grommets. Cut down to make 2. Scored from a bike shop for free as they were in the habit of keeping these when fairings are written off to substitute on any that get lost during servicing.
In the intervening 6 years I have still cracked the plate but that is another yarn.

Previous plates: original vibed off in a week, the second lasted about a month, but that was nylocked on. It left the bolts and two little bites of plate behind.

I went down to the local VTNZ and they sorted it all pretty quick costed me $25.45 for a replacement license plate and a new reg label and wof sticker. Paid another $11.68 for wof and reg holders. Went to The Bolt Shop in Wairau and bought a couple of bolts, with metal and nylon washers with nyloc nuts. Have to say the Bolt Shop were really friendly and helpful despite my order only costing $1.80.

Wasnt as expensive as I thought it would be and got it sorted quick. Hopefully that will keep it falling off for awhile yet!

Thanks for your advice guys!

So to clarify is a whole new rego number as most of us were saying?

Having had to do the same thing a few years back with me ole vtr, yep, new plate with diff number and new rego sticker to match, i still had my wof though so no change required there.

The only hassle was when selling the bike with punters questioning why the change of plate? was the bike a write off? bla bla bla........ All Attempts in getting the price knocked back.

Hope that helps

A question for our resident detectives....
Does a new plate number obscure a vehicles history of offending/suspicious behaviour/driving complaints/money owed etc....

Just asking as this is the second time I have seen when stolen check/carjam suspect feral mobiles stopping nearby: There is a box that comes up "Plates History" for vehicles that have had to get new plates for whatever reason like thread author did for example.
Anyway this POS out in street has had SEVEN different number plates assigned to it, two of which were personalised plates, but wtf can be a legit reason for the rest???

As I understand ... You can apply to the Registrar of Motor vehicles ... for a Vehicle history check. (A fee will be required)

Continuous vehicle Registration will ensure continuous vehicle records .... for that vehicle.

Re-Registration from dead plates will (usually) be a different story.

Some boy racers change them for various reasons. Sometimes it is because they are known to the cops. Perhaps mistakenly they believe that their car won't be recognised as easily. Soon as their car is known they change the plate. It seems to take the heat off until the next time they are stopped.

Also known a few of them to trade plates when money gets tight or they have a little extra.

Usually still linked if they have the original VIN.

VIR should return all records corresponding to the same plate or vin.

I should have used the word cop instead of detective....

When a cop queries that rego, does its ongoing identity crisis flag up. I cant see an legitimate reason to have had six plates in a three year period.
Both cars I've seen with this history have been shitters and only one could be classed as proper boy racer style....

Yeah I got a new rego number. You can get a duplicate replacement plate with same number but it costs alittle more as you have to order it via the www.licensys.com and wait awhile for it to get posted out to you.. as opposed to just going down to the local VTNZ and getting a new plate with a new rego number over the counter.

Maybe he wanted a new one, all you gotta do is say I lost one and fill in the form and buy a new plate - easy as....

I have had three personalised plates stolen in over 31 years...:) TRIARD - used to have a VW that never went plus I did Triathlons...It was bought by my Mum when they first came out. It cost I think $299 back then?
Two have been damaged, so that makes five plates in total on my vehicles....
All have been the same plate too, so if these were involved in nefarious activities nobody has come knocking at my door.
The last plate and current one sits on my neighbours van which I have to retrieve....It has sentimental value...:)
I guess I have to now pay him for a new plate and get the personalised one back.....

you can get the square-er style plates from Kingsland VTNZ. They sometimes run out so ring for avaliability. :-)
