View Full Version : ANYONE ABLE TO HELP PYRO NOW, ON NW..??

bugjuice
15th September 2005, 18:05
Just got a text from him, he's got a flat (ran over a screw) and got stuck on the NW.. It's a tubed tyre, so no quick fix..

anyone able to assist or have any ideas to help him (or just tell him to get his lazy ass on the AA), then give him a quick buzz/text on 021 477 976

or likewise if you're on the way home, and just want to laugh at him as you go past, I'm sure he'll appreciate it..

as for the tools, I spoke to him and it sounds like the only things he needs are tyre spoons (most racers have these, so I'm guessin Frosty might), and a clue..

Woot!
SAVED!

ok heres the gos ladies and gents.
thanks for all your support frosty placid crashe and of course the first man on the line Bugjuice. reping you all in 24.

I busted outa work nice and early (for me) at 5:15ish kept my unruly riding under wraps because im getting the feel i need to tone it down a bit before i splat myself.

get stuck behind three buses and give up on that idea. since they are stationary I pull my wing mirrors in and drive up the right hand side of them (mistake #1) I must have gone over some road crap while I was so close to the edge.

I got past them and noticed a wobble wobble wobble. figured out pretty quick it was a flat and slowed down and indicated right luckily just as the wall stopped and the grass verge on the right hand bit started. pushed it along a bit till I was past bond st bridge and got off and had a think.

Wowzers im lucky methinks! I bought an emergency tire inflater that works on tubed and tubeless tiires for my cold kiwi expereince. so I stuck that bitch on and start pumping it in thinking im a legend for carrying that. (mistake #2)

after about 10 mins the shit started exploding out of every nook and crannie and this latex shit is nasty crap and it was all over my back wheel and hands... COOL!

call AA and get a towie to come out. had to explain a couple times that motorbikes dont carry spares in the boot. then waiting around and who should turn up out of the blue but frosty on his way home. fucken awesome. but he cant do anything yet cos Im shit scared to ride his bike (not to mention im on a L) and he couldnt pillion on it etc. but no worries mate. he shoots home and finds a van somewhere. picks me up and takes me home.

now. while this was happening. im not a dumb guy and I call up my good mates at colemans, talk to dan who knows me I think cos I buy so much shit off him. he agrees to get someone out there on a busa to deliver me a tube so I dont have to leave the bike there. Im properly impressed with that. was $14 but gave the guy $20 for the trouble. on the side of the motorway dealing a tube to me. hillarious.

something thats incredible fun and dangerous btw guys is to straddle your bike in the back of a van with no tie downs and lean it around the corners to keep the COG right. might have stumbled across a new way to teach newbies how to lean.

btw I DID call kerry at motohaus first but he didnt have any in stock.

now If anyones intrested. I want to fit this baby tonight. I dont have a garage but ive got a deck. beer for payment.

otherwise ill bus in tomorow which is no big deal and fix it sat which may be more appropriate.

to finale.
big fucking thank you to frosty who turned up out of the blue and saved another kiwibiker!

edit: i have everything but tire levers

Hooning around in the back of a van aye....
Now that would have been fun..... :ride:

Got two black levers thingee here and two smaller silver levers....
all sitting in my garage...

Ya have to be careful not to pinch the tube when putting it back in... and blowing it up...
Have you got something to blow air into it as well....
One of those footpumps?
I got one of them in my garage as well...
Mind you there is a BP about 1 mile up the road from your place.

Have you got the wheel off already and got it up on the deck?

nah ill leave it for the weekend when its light i reckon. dont like to leave the wheel off for too long since I use wood to hold it up.

also its filthy

I have a pushbike handpump and yes bp up the road. can just take the wheel up

Can you get a lift there and a lift back...

well that was scarey shit man. That ol van was a tadd down on power --made getting over 3 lanes of fast moving traffic kinda interesting.
Then some dumb fuck forgot to bring tiedowns so we wobble back onto the motorway at very slow speed with poor ol cam hanging on for dear life.

might see you about those levers if I cant buy someone to come on sat and show me how its done. good ol kiwi enginuity is one thing but poping a new tube is another

Easy enough job but a few things to remember.
1/ Mark the tyre with chalk at valve position to keep wheel balance when refitted.
2/ Loosen security bolt if fitted. Press tyre down into centre of rim
3/ Remove tyre starting at valve position. Take a few inches at a time

4/ When one side of tyre is removed pull out the tube and find puncture, check corresponding area inside the tyre. You may have a nail in there..
5/ Before fitting new tube inflate slightly, just enough to get the shape. This will help avoid trapping when you refit the tyre. Make sure valve stem is not coming through the rim at an angle
6/ Refit the tyre starting opposite the valve. Push it on by hand working from side to side and keeping the tyre pressed down into the rim. The levers only need to be used for the last few inches. Make sure the tube is inside the tyre by pushing in the valve stem. ( Fit nut onto first few threads to make sure it doesn't go inside the rim). An alternative to using levers is to tread the last few inches with the heel of your boot. This eliminates any chance of trapping.

Tip/ A smear of dishwashing liquid around the inside edge of the tyre makes the job easier.
If a security bolt is fitted make sure it is on the inside of the tyre by pushing in before inflating. When inflated ensure tyre is running true. tighten security bolt and valve stem nut

still I have to pump it past 10psi and tighten the chain
ill proberly need a new on in a couple months :(

edit:

its not 'true' its got a lump in it
am I going to kill myself If I just pump it up and let the bump sort itself out?
its proberly still got a serious amount of dishwasing liquid on it so it might move around

eliot-ness
18th September 2005, 18:46
Let the tyre down. Squeeze in to the centre where the bump is and work around the rim until the tyre is true, There should be a guide line around the tyre to help. Inflating may work but only if you have the means to go to 40lbs+. Don't forget to deflate to correct pressure afterwards. Whether it's safe to ride depends on how far out of true it is and how fast you ride. Not worth the risk for something so easy to rectify.

hmmm for my tire. I think ill deflate it and re inflate

see if it works itselft out. ill take it up to BP on its 10psi and pump it up and down a couple times

FUCK ARSE CUNTY MOTHER SHIT COCK GAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

ok.
im better now

i think I used my entire repertoire of swear word combo's this morning

woke up. rode it on 10psi to my BP running a bit late for work
spent about 10mins trying to pump it up before I realised the pump was broken
_insert various swear words relating to genital regions_ rode it with NO air in the tire to a mobil station about a k further down the road
sign on it 'broken' so I _insert swear words about sexual intercourse' really loudly_ oh look theres little kids about. dont like swearing in front of them. swear some more cos i swore in front of kiddies. sigh.

ok so ive got no psi. its wobbling funny but I can move.
took it to the bp at st lukes. you know what? It was fucking broken as well.

DO PETROL STATIONS NOT GIVE AWAY AIR ANYMORE! FFS!

lukiliy ther was a tireplace next door. coolies. they pumped it up. nice guys. and there was a bike out the front which I recognised from the tire place outside my work.

so anyway woohoo Im not insanely late for work

I go about 150m down the road and it starts slipping and shit all over again. im rooted. I cant really even go anywhere cos the wheel spins but the tyre stays still

with a bit of effort I managed to go forward
get to motohaus with alot of effort but kerry hasnt opened yet. _insert swear words about gay people here_ (no i wasnt swearing AT kerry. swearing at the situation)

get it back onto the main road. hear funny noises like the chain has come off.
well no the chain hasnt come off. just my new inner tube has wrapped its self around my sprocket _blah some more swearing_

pull the thing off. ride it tubeless to colemans with ALOT of effort and greif.
the rain and wet roads made for a fucking fun time. get it in there and say ITS FUCKED. they say too bad im too busy. _some more swearing. they say they will do it before 5 since its only a tube change.

walked to work

That doesn't sound right. Do you mean clamps like in off roaders? Or the nuts on the valve stem ? Either way sounds wrong.

EDIT: Reads later saga. Oh dear. Not sure what happened there. Tube repairs are usually straightforward enough, I just hate doing them because I ALWAYS skin my knuckles on the tyre levers. Which is why I always take them to a bike shop nowdays. They have those wonderful machines that full the tyre off and put it on. And they can rebalance the wheel. For a few bucks it's not worth messing around doing it oneself .

Oh well it's all experience. Part of the wonderful variagated tapestry that is biking.

thats true indeed.

on the valve there was three bolts. I find out now you tighten them up to keep the tube in place and the valve from moving. one goes inside one goes outside

The third normally goes outside, as a locknut. I assume you mean nuts, not bolts.

That wasn't what went wrong though, if that had been the problem, you would have ripped the valve out of the tube(which is what I thought had happened, at first). Your valve stem looks OK
